Let the Bidding Begin - License Plate Auction Going Live

Low Number Plates Expected to Fetch Record Numbers Online
Locals are betting Bill Zammer will outbid all others for #1

Beating the Red Sox is no easy task these days.  Joe Torre's home address in L.A. is proof positive of that. So for newly appointed Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian, the fact that the Registry's Cape & Islands license plate has outsold the Red Sox version is impressive indeed.

Chamber Board member Jamie Regan enjoys a laugh with his wife (on right) and Coonamessett Inn owner Linda Zammer.
Kaprielian and a host of Cape Cod notables celebrated that feat at the Coonamessett Inn in Falmouth tonight, and are banking on the plate's winning ways to continue.

Flanked by Cape Cod Chamber President Wendy Northcross and local radio talk show host Ed Lambert, Kaprielian announced the start of an online auction for rights to Cape & Islands plates with low numbers from 1 - 999.

Bidding July 8-August 1 online only

Bids will be accepted strictly online beginning July 8 and ending August 1 at capeandislandsplate.com

All proceeds from the sale of the plates will benefit local non profit organizations, including the Barnstable County Economic Development Council, the Lower Cape Community Development Council,  and the Cape Cod Chamber. The Cape & Islands License Plate Committee has also pledged $10,000 from its auction proceeds to the Cape Cod Baseball League, according to Committee Chair Paul Rumul.

Reminiscing about her time enjoying the sunshine on Falmouth's Old Silver Beach as a child, Kaprielian sang the praises of Cape Cod and noted that over 44,000 cars are adorned with this specialty plate, with proceeds of over $14 million going to the license plate committee's designated non-profits.

#1-#10 = $10,000 each

Plate numbers 1 - 10 will fetch a minimum online bid of $10,000; numbers 11 - 100 will require a commitment of at least $1,000; and plates 101 - 999 will start the bidding off at $100.

Although no announcement was made at the gathering, Connamessett owner Bill Zammer was seen feverishly tapping keys on a calculator, presumably compiling his bid for plate 1...

Plates C/I #1-1000 should go the top teachers in Cape public schools, the school crossing guards who stand in the rain and snow, top fire, police & EMT people - the very idea that a government status could be bought by the highest bidder should shock the conscious of any citizen in a representative democracy. Donate for the sake of giving.

Bill Zammer is shrewd businessman. He'd rather take #666 with the minimum bid.
