"Mounties" help keep order on Commercial St. during Provincetown's 4th of July celebration
PROVINCETOWN - Tens of thousands of people jammed into Provincetown Friday evening for the annual fireworks celebration. A contingent of police including State and Barnstable County Sheriff officers along with a mounted unit from Plymouth County were on hand to keep order. No major incidents were reported but police were kept busy with a number of arrests and a larger number of protective custodies for public drunkness. Police also investigated at least three assault and battery incidents one of which reportedly involed a person being struck in the face with a board. Extra ambulances from as far away as Yarmouth were moved down Cape and there were a number of medical calls mostly for extreme intoxication or minor injuries. Preliminary figures obtained by CWN show 11 people were arrested while 17 were put in protective custody. Back in 2005 a series of skirmishes nearly degenerated into a riot along part of Commercial Street. No major accidents were reported except for one in Eastham (see story below).
