Developing overnight: Rollover with entrapment in Sandwich

The driver of this convertible was trapped for almost an hour after it rolled over in the woods in Sandwich.
SANDWICH - One person was seriously injured in a rollover crash in Sandwich around midnight Saturday/Sunday.

The crash happened on Farmersville Road at Percival Lane when a red convertible rolled over in the woods.

The driver was trapped and it took nearly an hour for rescuers to free him using the Jaws of Life. The man, said to be about 20-years-old, was taken to the Holly Ridge Golf Course where a Medflight helicopter flew him to Boston Medical Center with multiple injuries.

A passenger was able to escape the wreckage on their own and was taken by a Centerville ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

A crash reconstruction team is assisting Sandwich Police in investigating the crash.

Sources say alcohol was a likely factor in the crash.

Manhole explosion reported on Route 132 side

Firefighters and NStar workers check a manhole that blew outside the Cape Cod Mall.
HYANNIS - More power problems to report, this time in the area of the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis. Power problems were first reported late Saturday afternoon and firefighters had to free a person trapped in a stalled elevator in  Macy's. NStar workers thought they had the situation under control when a manhole exploded near the food court entrance on the Route 132 side of the Mall sometime after 6:30 p.m. No one was injured but firefighters confirmed smoke coming from the manhole. Utility crews worked late into the evening trying to fix the trouble.

Large blackout reported on part of the Cape
Dennis Fire Department inundated with calls

DENNIS
- A large power outage began affecting parts of the Cape from Harwich to Yarmouth sometime after 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon. NStar equipment failure was apparently to blame. The resulting arcing apparently sparked a brush fire on Setucket Road in Dennis that Dennis Fire was called to extinguish. NStar crews were working to restore power to the area.

During the blackout Dennis Fire was inundated with multiple calls including a person struck by a car on Route 28 by Benny's and a car vs tree on Route 6A as well as several medical and fire alarm calls. Mutual aid from Brewster and Yarmouth was called in to assist. The pedestrian was not seriously injured and the driver of the car vs tree also escaped serious injury.

About an hour later several vehicles collided on Route 134 at Fresh Pond Road. No serious injuries were reported at that crash either.

As of 4:45 p.m. NStar had been able to isolate the problem and most of the power was being restored.

Five injured in Yarmouth crash, medical condition may be to blame
YARMOUTH
- Five people were injured when a vehicle struck a tree on Brook Hill Lane in West Yarmouth around 7:30 p.m. Yarmouth Police are reportedly investigating if the driver may have had a medical condition that contributed to the crash. An ambulance from Hyannis assisted in transporting victims to Cape Cod Hospital. None of the injuries appear life-threatening.

Motorcycle crash on Route 6 onramp
BARNSTABLE
- A motorcyclist was injured after crashing his bike on the ramp from Route 132 to Route 6 westbound around 4:30 p.m. The victim was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries that were serious but not considered life-threatening. The crash is under investigation by State Police.

Bicyclist dies riding in woods
WEST BARNSTABLE - A bicyclist reportedly collapsed while riding in the remote area along the power lines off the Service Road early Saturday afternoon. Friends called for help but weren't exactly sure where they were. Rescuers called for a helicopter to help them spot the victim. However the victim was located before the helicopter arrived and was brought out of the area with rescuers performing CPR. The victim was then rushed to Cape Cod Hospital but tragically was pronounced dead at the hospital. Further details were not immediately available.

CENTERVILLE - At 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning the principal of the Centerville Elementary School on Bay Lane reported to police that the grounds had been vandalized a week before the school year is to start. Thanks for the update on the power outage, Tim. I had gotten an emergency call from the gal who manages my rental cottage in Dennisport that when the power came on, the cottage didn't so needed an electrician out there pronto. No time to chat on the phone but I knew I could get the details from your Blog. Thanks again.

Wondering if the relative of the bicyclist called 911..a law passed 2 years ago that all cell phones had to have GPS..that way if someone called 911 from a cell phone, they would not have to know where they were..the mapping system would tell the 911 operator the caller's location, to within 150'...so pay attention: if you have an emergency and can't tell where you are, even if you know the FD/PD phone number, dial 911 from a cell phone so the mapping system can assist.
