Coast Guard Station Provincetown conducts boating safety boardings

BOSTON - With Labor Day weekend approaching and with several weeks remaining to the summer recreational boating season, the Coast Guard is reminding the boating public to practice safe boating habits and be responsible mariners.

A good way local recreational boaters can be safe on the water is to make sure they carry onboard their vessel all of the required safety equipment mandated by federal law.

As part of its boating safety mission and authority Coast Guard crews within the First District routinely board vessels to ensure that all of the required safety equipment for that vessel is onboard, including a sufficient number of lifejackets for everyone aboard, signaling devices like flares that can be used in an emergency, and a fire extinguisher.

While the focus of these boardings is to help educate the boating, Coast Guard boarding officers do have the authority to issue violations and terminate a voyage if a vessel is deemed unsafe due to a lack of safety equipment or is unseaworthy.

Boating while intoxicated is another situation where a voyage would be terminated by the Coast Guard.

A great way to make sure a boat is ready for the season and has onboard all of the required safety equipment is have the boat inspected, for free, by the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The public is also encouraged to take a safe boating course offered by the auxiliary or U.S Power Squadron.

As always the Coast Guard recommends that anyone going out on the water wear a lifejacket.

UPDATE: Second mall stabbing suspect arrested Wednesday morning

BARNSTABLE - Dino J. Tillman, the second suspect at large in a stabbing at the Cape Cod Mall on Aug. 9, has delivered himself into the hands of the police.

Tillman, 19, of Mitchell's Way in Hyannis, was arrested Wednesday morning as he walked into Barnstable District Court for an appearance on an unrelated charge.

Police have been searching for Tillman shortly after the brawl, which injured three people. One victim, who nearly died, required open-heart surgery. All three now have been release from Cape Cod Hospital.

Sgt. Sean Sweeney of the Barnstable police said a police officer working a traffic detail Wednesday noticed Tillman as a passenger in a passing vehicle. Tillman was wearing a tie, and the officer suspected he might be on his way to court.
