"Tropic Thunder"-- My Movie Review

My advice on this one:  Wait for the DVD.

In fact, I would have waited for the DVD myself if the Kennedy clan had not aroused my curiosity by making such an ado about the use of the word "retard" and Ben Stiller's portrayal of "Simple Jack," sort of a film within this film within this film, if you know what I mean.  But comedy is comedy and satire is satire, and I believe the producers treated Simple Jack with a certain degree of affection in the film.

I'm aware some of you have already seen Tropic Thunder and think it was terrific.  It got good write-ups from Playboy to The Economist.  But I think too much of the "humor" was over-the-top gore and raunch.

Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey, Jr., three genuinely funny actors, go into the Vietnamese jungle (actually filmed in Hawaii) to make a movie about "war hero" Nick Nolte.  I hope I don't give too much away by saying he's more like the Cape's own Glenn Marshall than he is Sergeant York.

Vietnamese drug lords mistake them for DEA, and the action begins.  In the goriest, and I think the most hilarious, scene, their nasty, arrogant director steps on an old French land mine right before their eyes and gets blown to bits.  Ben Stiller convinces most of them it's just "Hollywood special effects" and picks up the severed head.  "It's made of rubber," he assures them as he holds it up and allows the blood to run onto his tongue and into his mouth.  "Blood-colored honey," he says.  Then observes, "Blood-FLAVORED blood-colored honey."

The drug scouts watch this action from the jungle.  The scout leader radios back to their chief, "These Americans are fearless!"  To me, that was the funniest part of the movie.

Robert Downey, Jr., was a joy to watch in every scene.  He plays a white dude playing a black dude playing a black dude, if you know what I mean.  Don't forget, this is a movie within a movie.  As the movie progresses and he really gets into the role, he starts to lose his true identity, resulting in confusion and some pretty funny scenes.

Throughout this movie, their balding, paunchy, ruthless producer in the United States continually bawls them out and threatens them via television closed circuitry.  When he hears they may be killed by the drug gang if nothing is done, he does nothing.  He figures the insurance policies he has on them may gross more than the movie.

I never recognized the producer because of the makeup and had no idea he was in the movie.  He is revealed in the closing credits.  To me, this was the second best part of the movie.

Did I enjoy it?  Yes.  But, while recognizing it was also a satire on Hollywood movie making,  it still relied too much on gore and raunch for comedy.  I say wait for the DVD.

As someone who saw the film (twice) I think it's an injustice to see this film on DVD. This is truly a piece that gets funnier with audience participation.

As for the raunchiness, it's no more raunchy than Mel Brooks "Blazing Saddles" and in fact, I think the film parodies the meaningless raunch of modern cinema. The film begs you to let go (for at least an hour and half) of your political correctness and maturity and just have some fun, laughing at the insanity of film.

Please go see this film! And make it a double feature with "Hamlet 2". Just be careful not to break a rib laughing from "Rock Me Sexy Jesus". :)

Hey Solon! Was the Vietnam War a 'noble enterprise'? Isn't the evidence pretty much unimpeachable(like GWB) that the Tonkin Gulf Incident was trumped-up? And um, didn't the USA finally 'cut & run' via 'copter from Saigon? That's the linchpin of the current campaign. If McCain was bombing civilians due to a bogus beef, didn't he deserve a stretch in the H.Hilton? Help me out here.

Careful now..
Vietnam was a drug war (inside the triangle) that got out of control and JFK escalated,LBJ expanded, and Nixon ended..wierd ehh?2 Democrats perpetuating an unpopular war and a Repub ended..and then fell from grace..

Oh the folly of it all..

But do not diminish the service of veterans..
as if the VC were the enlightened.ones..
Their horrors perpetrated were no laughing matter..
despite the politics of it all...

Ned...I served during the Viet Nam period.

It wasn't about politics from the day it started til the day it ended.

The more I read your comments, despite your artistic talent, the more I realize you are out of touch and all f..ked up.

Now that we can't talk facts on the blog please continue with your fiction.

possee-- Gerry Ford ended 'Nam. The ONLY way we got outta there was to impeach Nixon... and sure, you could say that JFK started it and the Tonkin scam was LBJ's production. Ho Chi Minh had worked as a waiter in NYC and spoke passable English! HE LOVED AMERICA at that point. We could've handled him a LOT better than we did. We were trying to undo our Korea defeat and bought ourselves a vaster one. --So mav, let me guess... it wasn't politics, it was... honor? As you say, you weren't incountry... a lot of my friends were... a classmate of mine came back, shot his mom and sis and himself. First one to drop the F-bomb loses the argument. Appreciate the cruise offer but we REALLY wouldn't have gotten along. --Solon WAS 'NAM A 'NOBLE ENTERPRISE? It ALL hinges on that question.

Ned...I am not at liberty to say where I served. The war was fought by both parties to thwart the spread of communism.

Was it politics when JFK stood up to the Russians in Cuba? I was thrilled when he defeated Nixon.

You are right on one thing. We wouldn't get along. I still have friends who served incountry in both Korea and Nam.
And they believe they did the right thing. And they didn't suggest it was noble. It was what their country asked them to do.

Your sick humor and attitude deserve more than an F-bomb. If it was up to your ilk we would not be the free nation we are.

Enjoy the day and thank all those who came before you. They created the opportunity for some to draw dimples, smoke dope and blog without the fear of government reprisal.

Mav,

Did I miss something? Has the cruise to nowhere already happened? Say it ain't so. It's been the most anticipated event this site has ever seen.

How did it go? We want a full report..... pronto.

Buzz...the cruise to nowhere has not taken place. All of Cru's friends don't like my politics. I have none, just opinions.

And my suggestions for participants have been vetoed. Possee, myself and brides will go offshore and enjoy a beautiful Fall day.

This string of comments is in reply to review about a 'funny movie' about 'Nam. I'm the one who got indignant about the fact that nobody's willing to agree or disagree w/ Ronnie Raygun's comment that "'Nam was a noble enterprise". I'm not goin' out on a boat for the afternoon with dudes who won't cut the crap. The stink of denial makes me seasick.

Mav,

I'm here to set the record straight.

It's not about you. It's more about the a concern of people who will show up who are not able to behave like civilized adults.
I don't want to be forced to have to throw any rug rats overboard. Was this your idea or someone else's?

You know the person I am. I will never back down to any challenge. But after all that's been said, and some have had threats made against them.I do worry. Maybe the boat ride creates too much tension. Please don't take it personal. I will always be grateful for your support of my blogs and love your good humor. We don't share certain mutual "friends", but still like one another. There will be other boat rides. I hope we can meet someday. I'm willing to leave politics at the dock. Our soldiers don't start these wars, Mav. But many of us know they give their lives for what they believe. It's govt's who start wars, but their people suffer.

Have a nice boat ride and hope your invitation stands for someday. Luv CCC.

Ned,

My views on the Vietnam War were made very clear and presented and substantiated in great detail in my thesis to the United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1974. You are not privy to that paper.

Don't try to convert a review of a movie, a comedy at that, into a debate about the Vietnam War.

The only "stink of denial" is in your own olfactory organs. I have already answered your question, but to my country, not to you.

crusader [Member] writes:
What about the movie, "American Gangster", with Denzel Washington? Isn't that based on a true story? Heroin being imported into this country from Vietnam via our soldier's coffins?

That's something to really be proud of? And isn't this country still importing Heroin from Afganistan? So what exactly has changed?

When we talk about our soldiers fighting for REAL FREEDOM, this is not the same thing. We are talking about War for Money. Contra and Reagan, Bush's and the Nazi's, putting dictators into power than killing them when they no longer serve any use to us. Colonizing and slaughtering innocent people in the name of oil!

Was it communism they were fighting or just trying to sell planes, tanks and amo. We are not all blind to why we enter wars. I think they should force every politician to put their first born in front of enemy lines. You think that happens? Think again. Now who is the one in denial.

I'm not privy to Solon's thesis. Maverick is not at liberty to divulge his theatre of combat where he says he battled a rival nation of anti-communists(?!) Is this the best lure to join the military... because it kinda excuses you, if you survive it, from having to speak rationally about the overreaches of empire for the rest of your life? This is PRECISELY why McCain is even MORE dangerous to liberty than Bush!! I hereby disrespect your pompous pious secrecy. Both of you, and Robbins, are reaching out to be my buddies. You don't make it easy.

Ned...If you are suggesting I am reaching out to you or anyone else you've got the wrong guy.

I didn't create the military code of conduct that I swore to uphold. My orders were classified. As such you can disrespect whatever pleases you.

In the interim I will vote for McCain-Palin. A trusted national hero and a smart hardworking governor.
