Route 6: "Patti Page Highway"?

After my piece, "Old Cape Cod at Old Landing Motel," wherein I mentioned Patti Page, I was contacted by Michael Glynn, Patti Page's personal manager, who told me how much he appreciated it.

We reminisced a little on how Patti's recording of Old Cape Cod has now been playing for fifty years, keeping Cape Cod in people's thoughts and helping to attract new visitors to the Cape each year.

patti_page_369Patti Page put Cape Cod on the map for people who couldn't find it on the map, for people who couldn't find Massachusetts on the map, for people who couldn't even find the map.

If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air

Quaint little cottages here and there

I ran into a first-time visitor to the Cape in Dennisport the other day, who told me, "Omigosh, it's just like in the song!"

You're sure to fall in love with Old Cape Cod

And I thought, a generation from now people may not be as familiar with that song as we are today, people may not remember Patti Page as most of us do now.  Maybe it's time to honor her in some way and keep her and that song ever connected to Cape Cod.

Oh, where is Patti Page?  Not too far away.  She and her husband run the New England Hilltop Farm in Bath, New Hampshire, about 20 miles south of Littleton, where they produce maple products and organic foods.  (www.pattipageproducts.com)  At the age of 80--she is in fantastic shape--she still performs about 50 concerts a year.

In tossing ideas around, Michael and I came up with a couple.  He proferred that she might be available to appear at some fund-raising occasion, or perhaps a plaque could be erected in some park, things like that.

But the best, and the most improbable one, is to change the Cape's portion of Route 6 from "Mid-Cape Highway" to the "Patti Page Highway."  I know highway names are usually reserved for war heroes or governors, but Mid-Cape Highway still retains that boring moniker and let's face it, it has no panache.  "Patti Page Highway" is so much more meaningful and will serve to keep and attract visitors to the Cape because of the wonderful memories it will evoke.

If you spend an evening you'll want to stay

Watching the moonlight on Cape Cod Bay

So I throw that out to you and ask for your own suggestions.   Can we come up with something that could take off?  Something our Chamber of Commerce may want to pick up on?  After all, we've gotten fifty years of wonderful, free advertising from Patti Page.

You're sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod

Give me your thoughts.  And enjoy today on the Cape.

Patti Page's influence is definitely appreciated, but I don't think that's such a good idea. We could easily bestow numerous other Cape Codders with that honor, like Katherine Lee Bates, JFK or Robert Ballard, but to choose one over another seems dubious. It reminds me of the episode of The Simpsons where Sideshow Bob names the new highway, "The Matlock Expressway" in exchange for the senior vote.;)

Solon, that's a fantastic idea! Everyone loves the song, Patti's adorable, what's not to love? Screw that stale old piece of toast spinster Katherine Lee Bates.

capecodjon, it's people like you who make the world a duller place, because of your fixation on the illusion of "fairness" and not doing anything because if you do something, someone somewhere might not like it or might not agree! Horrors! This malady is pervasive in New England and rare in the South.

In the South, a couple of guys in the mayor's office decide to re-name Main Street Elvis Presley Boulevard or Hank Williams Jr, street and BAM! it's done. It gives their town a little flair, a little panache and makes it memorable. Most people in the town like Elvis anyway so it's a done deal.

Here in New England, 40,000 people would have to attend 300 town meetings to discuss this issue. The Cape Cod Commission would get involved. After 25 years of debate, Patti Page would be dead and they'd decide to name it Cape Cod Highway so as not to offend anyone.

Great idea!
But if Patti Page's political leanings are investigated, and she is someone who loves her country,(party affiliation not withstanding)there will be a problem with the majority here on Cape Cod..

never mind capemom's absolutely correct view on the Cape Cod Commission's take..

About 14 years ago I used to sell my crafts and artwork at the flea market at Wellfleet drive-in. There was a vendor a few tables down from me who had a tape that would play a few lines of "Old Cape Cod" and then a few lines of Patsy Cline's "Crazy". all day long..... Every Sunday, I'd hear this for hours and hours. In spite of this, I used to really enjoy working the flea market. I'd come home with my face actually aching from smiling at the customers all day long. And Sunday nights I'd have that tape in my head going over and over again until I fell asleep. Good times.

Great Idea....but not a highway
The song has done alot for Cape Cod and has become a part of its history.
But instead of a highway, try a scenic beach or view point. That's where the real beauty is.

Not totally accurate assessment of New England, Capemom. Cambridge abruptly renamed Boylston Street JFK Street and suddenly, in Worcester, Worcester Center Boulevard became Major Taylor Blvd., and I don't even know who Major Taylor is, and neither does Google Maps. I guess it depends on who wants the renaming. ;-)

Well, I guess I made the mistake of projecting Cape Cod ways onto the rest of New England, my bad. The difference is that New England chooses noble politicians and humanitarian African-American athletes of yore (That's who Major Taylor) was to re-name their streets after, rather than rock stars. Snore.

I vote for "Patti Page Highway" She's done more for Cape Cod tourism than any politicians or Cape 'homebodies' have.

Who gives a rat's ass what her politics are. And, who cares what the 'majority' on Cape Cod thinks. This is a tourist economy out here. Patti certainly has done her part to bring them here -- as did her collaborators, the original song writers.

Ya dance with the partner that brung ya.

The pun has often been called the lowest form of wit. Ned, Steve--it looks as if the three of us have sunk to a new low.

But wait! Oscar Levant said, "A pun is the lowest form of humor--if you don't think of it first." Maybe we're still OK.

But seriously, maybe some of you readers who have some pull with the local pols can get something started here regarding the "Patti Page Highway" or a similar endeavor. I think it's past due.

'Yes / No... Would you support changing the name of the Mid Cape to PATTI PAGE HIGHWAY?'

Here's a thought: If Janet Joakim has any smarts left and wants to save her *ss as a council woman...

She will jump on this like a hobo onna ham sandwich and start a movement to do something more positive for the town for a change.
