The Veep Debate and the Bailout

"Well golly gee, we're gonna be mavericks for ya!" With a folksy charm, Sarah Palin did little to demonstrate anything other than the ability to handle rehearsed generalities in a way that people find likeable. Joe Biden connected on both levels, he was personable and clearly showed a better knowledge of issues (and John McCain's record) than did Sarah Palin.

It's fair to say she exceeded expectations, if for no other reason than expectations were so low. There's a reason why Palin said she does not answer questions the way people want, she simply cannot. The number of times she turned back to energy on any number of questions, was telling. She should have been pressed further on her straddling the climate issue, as she has stated before it was not man made. And the reality is that drilling will not make a significant dent in the price we pay for oil.

It will be interesting to see whether her fundamental agreement with Biden on the rights of gay partners, will stand as is. Biden also pointed out he was glad to see her on board for taxes on windfall profits on oil companies, since McCain wants to give them more breaks.

So while she was likeable and didn't have any deer in the headlight moments, the CNN post debate poll went Biden 51-38. CBS' poll of uncommitteds went 46-21 to Biden and uncommitteds moved 18% to Obama, 10% to McCain. Palin may have stopped the bleeding amongst the GOP true believers, but where it counted, the night was Biden's.

I had to throw the bailout issue in here. The more I hear, the less I like it, and that goes especially for the bill that passed the Senate. That irritation I have goes to Obama as well as McCain. Aside from the continued lack of remedy for Main Street, versus Wall Street, the Senate version was aided by including a number of pork barrel spending items. I would have respected both men more had they voted against it on that principle.

Kudos to Congressman Delahunt for remaining opposed to the bailout for these fundamental reasons.

Deer-in-the-headlights, lowered expectations? Well, I link a lot to Salon Dot Com and DailyKos, too... repeating talking points is what the Blogosphere's all about, but... maybe work on some fresh catchphrases, Democrant. No, they didn't agree on gay marriage beyond both ducking the concept. Biden's for civil unions which would help with adoptions and such... and Palin, like Ahmedinejad, when forced to take a stand in public, will oppose execution for gay couples... but says don't take those hospital visits for granted... they're a privilege not a right! Again-- Wall Street/Main Street... Polly wanna cracker? I'm totally with you politically, Democrant but try to develop a snappier style, dude.

From where I sit in Arizona their are so many people bitter about this campaign. Sarah Palin is all window dressing. She maintains her full support for the Bush Doctrine, and Dick Cheney. The people here see Palin as they want to see her, also J.McCain.
Her attitude is false. A thin devious inner personality that draws people to her like bees. She is believable. She does not know the answers. An Attractive lady people wanted for the Oval office.
She fakes it! They do not want to see through her. A great salesman. She sells herself well.
I am older than John McCain. His medical records are out.At 81 I am in better health than he is.
Joe Biden, a very down to earth leader.
He too has a health problem. Had Aneurysms ! He is fine now.
That is like a time bomb in one's body.
Sarah Palin does not even know what the Supreme Court has or is working on
If the Republicans cared more, they would make her an intern,or a chief assistant to the office of Vice President and Prepare her for 2012. She is out of her class.! Palin is Not qualified for VP. Obama/Biden will pull ahead.

Esther you said it! Gov of Alaska should remain a hockey mom and get ready for grandkids. She would not answer questions posed by JoeB. McCain approved to deregulate, she couldn't handle it, Exxon's 600 billion tax cuts! 4 billion more slotted? WHAT! After all they stole at the gas pumps! McCain doesn't know difference between Islamic groups who are at war? Does he have dementia? Like Joe said, "their ultimate bridge to nowhere"...5k for healthcare to families goes to ins companies who will keep raising premiums. War costs 10 billion a month, time for 80 bill. Rich Iraq. To form their own govt. Bring troops home. Palin showed her Bush feathers. Joe knows what is going on, she is a distraction by rep who don't want their gravytrain to stop flowing. Power to the People! Vote Obama!

Ummm Ned, I rarely go to Kos or Salon, thanks. And writing at midnight when I get up at 4:30, I wasn't gunning for the Pulitzer at that hour. And you can stand to read a little better also, I never said anything about gay marriage, and neither did they. As far as the bailout, watching Lou Dobbs last night got my dander going on that.

Besides, when writing about Sarah Palin, you can only rise so far above the material ;).

My thought for the morning was that it was rather scary that 38% of those polled thought she did better than Biden. I guess there is a certain audience in America that is impressed that Alaska has oil? Surely it's not a yahoo factor....

Also from the CNN poll, one place where the difference between Biden and Palin comes out is from the following:
"On the question of the candidates' qualifications to assume the presidency, 87 percent of those polled said Biden is qualified and 42 percent said Palin is qualified."

Game, set and match.

JB... covered that already. For abut the18th time, I've said there is plenty to go around on both sides. Now rather than repeat the freeper talking points, ask why George Bush could not pass a bill to supposedly regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under a GOP Congress? When the Dems took the House in '06 elections, a bill was passed by May '07.

And by the way, good strategy. Take the cynical view that nothing can ever change, so might as well stay with the solid foundation of policies we've had from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave the past 7 1/2 years. That's worked out so well!

Can we talk about “Joe Sixpack” and the fact that this perjorative is continually being used in a race-baiting way — appealing to the poor, Southern or Midwestern white person (perhaps mainly male) with no higher education than high school and a distrust of anything “other” or let me be specific if Sarah Palin and John McCain will not –non white.

I am growing tired of Sarah’s suggestion that she is for the “Average American” and then calling that person the equivalent of white trash (which is a term I’ve always hated because it implies that the trash is still “good” cause it happens to be white). She DOES NOT reflect or understand the America that we are a part of today — diverse and intellectual, innovative and strong. he doubts whether American voters are going to elect “a one-term, a guy who has served for four years in the Senate,”

“My impression is [Obama] thinks that if we leave, somehow the Iraqis are going to have an epiphany” of peaceful coexistence among warring sects. “I’ve seen zero evidence of that.”

“The more people learn about them (Obama and Hillary) and how they handle the pressure, the more their support will evaporate.”

Buzz- I'm well aware of what McCain says now, versus his voting record and statements over the past 26 years. Casting himself as the populist protector against corporate America is not only putting lipstick on a pig, it adds on a pedicure and perhaps a lovely bonnet. Biden had it right on the mark, listing all the ways that McCain is NOT a maverick, based on McCain's record.

You know Beantown, I don't know what America looks like, but I do know that depending on where one lives, it is easy to see things in terms of class warfare. There are all sorts of ways that "those" people have been villified over the years, fill in whatever demographic you want. It really doesn't solve anything. There are a lot of people that I disagree with, even vehemently, but I hope it's not class warfare.

Though it is a funny thought that McCain, owner of 8 houses and 13 cars, would appeal to a demographic anything close to what you described.

This has been an election about fear of the "other" or as it has been coded a "fear of change". I do see a great deal of class warfare coming into the politcal arena. Much is made about how Palin connects with the "hockey moms" and "Joe Sixpacks" of America, and while they are rightfully a part of the American landscape that make up a one part of it, and it is a part that according to statistics is becoming more of a minority each day. Instead of "Joe Six Pack" (which if you think about it, is not an image that we need projected globally -- most of the world thinks we're arrogant, lazy, overweight drunkards ), they --Palin and McCain-- could talk to a greater core -- the Middleclass. You know who makes up the middle class? People from every race, creed, educational background. They forget we exist and apparently think we won't be out voting too on Nov. 14th.

We are all seeing the result of both parties lobbyist tainted legslation over the years that resulted in the collapse of America the shining beacon on the hill. Its time the American people demand that we get a bailout its time. Are jobs have been outsourced, we are loosing our houses, we have gas speculaters now that are making it hard for us to keep gas in our vehicles, and what did we do wrong? We are the victums we are the ones that are really being hit. We need to demand a Main Street bailout let us rebound the finanical institutes give the American people two installments of $500 thousand dollars. This will allow the people to pay off our toxic debts and have some disposable money, this is the only way to straigthen out this mess we are in. The people can do it from the bottom up instead of the typical trickle down scheme.
