McCain-Obama 2... same as it ever was

No big surprises last night, as both candidates continued to riff on the familiar themes, with occasional minor notes of interests that at least gave the pundits something to talk about. Post debate poll results were consistent with the prior debate. Both CNN's poll of all voters and the CBS poll of undedecided went to Obama, yet again. Both debates were supposed to be on McCain's home field, first on foreign policy, then last night's town hall format. Both times, he has been seen as losing the debate. What's left for him?

That said, it still is the economy that is driving the Obama momentum. Remember in '04, Kerry outperformed Bush in the debates, but got no traction out of that.

Even the McCain campaign has admitted that it cannot win the election if the news focus remains on the economic crisis. That pretty much waves the white flag that they cannot win the war of ideas with Obama on the economy. So when you can't win the war of ideas, I suppose taking your opponents ideas as your own is another option, as McCain did on the idea of buying up people's mortgages. From the Associated Press:

"In fact, at a news conference on Sept. 24, Obama said, "we should consider giving the government the authority to purchase mortgages directly instead of simply purchasing mortgage-backed securities."

Days later, in a news release, he said he would "encourage Treasury to study the option of buying individual mortgages like we did successfully in the 1930s.""

The best part was McCain prefacing this in calling the idea his own, not President Bush's and not Senator Obama's. That is, until you actually check the record. In addition, the bailout plan already gives the Treasury Secretary authority to do just that.

CNN's analysts made a note of McCain's disdain, noting his reference to Obama as "that one" when talking about who voted for the Energy Bill of 2005. Mind you, McCain's claim that it was full of goodies to the oil industry was, incorrect:

Congressional Research Service: The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT05, P.L. 109-58) included several oil and gas tax incentives, providing about $2.6 billion of tax cuts for the oil and gas industry. In addition, EPACT05 provided for $2.9 billion of tax increases on the oil and gas industry, for a net tax increase on the industry of nearly $300 million over 11 years.

There is a month to go in this campaign, which is a long time in politics. The McCain campaign is a mess; viewed as ship with no captain, veering every which way, trying to make to through the storm. They've gone negative, tried to ridiculously co-opt the theme of "change", made a huge blunder with a vp selection that has become a liability and been unable to, as Bush 1 would say, get a grasp of that vision thing.

Dem...I think you are right on target.

McCain is his own worst enemy. I think the Repubs have to concede this election. I like Sarah but it was a bad choice during these difficult economic times. He should have picked someone with a strong economic background instead of a cheerleader.

I am not a Monday morning quarterback. All the signs of an economic crisis have been out there for a couple of years.

McCain is so out of touch with the average voter it's not even funny. His "you people don't know who Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae are"....is so typical of a old man who is condescending to not only his opponents, but the American public. And the comment toward's Obama, referring to him as "that", was outrageous. And I'm tired of he and that pathetic excuse of a hopeful vp, brunette barbie contiuously saying "other countries hate us, and we need to worry about them", it sounds like a time warp of 50's with Russia...and is just making it worse. The other countries don't hate the American people, they hate those in power for steamrolling and colonizing the middle east, all in the name of greed.

Dad reached 86 when I was 12, half brother of Dennisport was 92 and still remembered me, mom is going on 81, so I'm planning to follow and have 45+ more to go. I know McCain suffered greatly as a POW, God bless, but it doesn't mean he's the best man for the job. I'm not asking for much, just my freedom, liberties and pursuit of happiness..want to be able to afford to live in my dad's home (built in 1886, bought in 1930) and become an author, keep my full time job. I do wonder what is going through McCain's heart of hearts right now. I said to someone today that I thought the McCain of 2000 would have been a far more formidble and effective presence. I do think that he has lost that sense of honor that attracted him to independents, which face it, is where the election is decided. There is anger, bitterness and disdain that is palpable. When I mentioned in my original post about Kerry not getting traction from winning his debates, a good part of that has to do with likeability and Kerry's persona is not one that plays well in a lot of areas of the country. The smartest kid in class usually isn't class president ;).

I am one of the folks that participated in the loss of trillions in the last few weeks. Did either of the frauds explain it in the debate?

Not only didn't they explain it neither had a solution. We are hostage to a corrupt government. And as long as states like MA and RI have as many gov. workers as there are voters it will never change.

I hope the country tanks to the point that true Americans stand up and are counted. In the interim McDonald's will be more popular than the Impudent Oyster.

I was at a political function a few weeks in the vicinity to where I live. I met someone who said he remembered dad very well. I perked right up, since many things had been kept from me. I said, "what can you tell me", he answered, "I can't tell ya anything"...LOL..enough said..I told him a few things...then he relaxed...It seems dad kept a gun in the attic", he said, "if you ever find it, throw it in the ocean". LOL..and there were other things, like loading and unloading trucks back in the days, and last thing he said, "he provided, didn't he". What could I say? Of course little girls will always love dad no matter what, and that child in me will forever adore that man for all he sacrificed. So I get it. It was never about murder, just a way to make a living, but you had to play along. It was the way of the times back then, in or out. He never trusted govt. either, now I'm learning why. If I had to choose between the two, you know which one.

Steaks of all kinds, aged and various cuts. Delmonico always a favorite, dad was a chef at the Parker (Omni) House and said it was the best cut, besides filet of course. Or if you prefer downtown Boston, (maybe you and Mav could take in a redsox game first?) I hear Smith & Wollensky's is great, although I haven't been, a family member has and loves it. Closer to home is Franks Steakhouse in North Cambridge, home of Tip O'Neil. The steaks are good too, more of a local hang out, but owners keep the place running well and atmosphere is nice.

Buzz- uh huh, that "great writer" that was suspended for plagarism? That's pretty funny. Jacoby is just warmed over right wing talking points, and Barney is a favorite target, gay, talks funny and in your face. I said from the get go, there is plenty of blame to go around, for a lot of people in both parties and financial institutions. Why didn't the GOP pass a bill all those years, they were in charge of everything? When the House flipped, Frank passed a bill through his committee and passed the House.

Even one of the links in Jacoby's story reveals his careless handling of the facts, in regards to opposing the bill from 2003- "Committee members were ready to support legislation that would give the Treasury Department oversight of Fannie and Freddie, as the administration has sought, Frank said, not power over the companies' housing activities, which are regulated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development." Between that and repeating the incorrect assertion that the CRA is another guilty party to this, Jacoby is once again, easily dismissed. Is that all he can say about me, that I couldn't hold a job on an island that doesn't want to keep it's inhabitants working full-time? I don't work in service, nor do I like that line of work and good for me that I came back and got a job that pays me what I'm worth, and pays for my education. In fact, they encourage "professional development", unlike the bosses you see on the Cape. But it's service oriented, catering to rich and tourists, so what does one expect? Somerville is wonderful and the Cape sucks....we get it.

Thanx..medium rare to rare is the best!

Would've loved to meet your Dad.. being a long time chef myself(3 years at the Back Bay Hilton..Boodles)

Just waiting for my ole sea dog mav (from another ole chef dog possee) to say the word and we'll be up to see you!

I'm sure we'll have a blast!

Perhaps we can discuss the viability of a third party that represents both sides of the aisle with common ground..

Hey Mav..are you ready for a trip?

Crusader is a lady at heart..and intelligent..

You've gotta appreciate her deprecating look at the nefarious ways of corruption..despite her leanings.

Hell, cru and I disagree on a lot, but I respect her opinions,as she does mine, that's the fine line of civility..
and she's dead on on a lot of issues..
as you are as well...

How many spouses are opposites politically? imagine those conversations..ehh?
Personally, I don't have faith in either side, yet find Palin an interesting juxtapose in the political arena..at least she's real and not apologetic.
McCain..Obama..forget it!
I'm still writing in Pat Paulsen...(the Smother's Brothers version)

possee,

I agree, I do however draw the line to her claims that I'm the insulting one. You don't have to look very far to check HER childish behavior.

Here's a brief sampling:

"that is why the Cape didn't fit to my standards of living--1000 drunks per sq. mile"

"Good luck Karen--you crabby sea hag"

"another alley cat speaks....hey, slut, who are you talking to?"

"are you one among the few nasty degenerates who drop to their knees for the rogues who make you take a number"

"Go back to your butch lesbos, you don't have a clue what you are talking about"

"yeah, go sit on it and give it a whirl yourself...freaksville"

"I'd take a gay man over a butch lesbo anyday"

"You people really do get the wackiest psychos....only on Cape Cod"

Buzz,

Truly flattered, but you are still not welcome to come to dinner. You just proved my argument. Thanks for making it easy.

A1 would ruin the steaks we'll be having.

Do you read my collection daily for your only source entertainment? Shall I resort to the same, buy posting your remarks? Maybe I could pull up KMA's too and we'll have a marathon of rude comments for all to see?

What you fail to tell the readers--that most of those comments where a response to your initial verbal attacks (rap, karent, etc., probably all same posters) at me for pointing out my own personal experiences while working on the Cape. Even the chief of police admits there are "too many drunks on the Cape". Maybe you should go harass him, now.

possee, let me know when you two are ready to make the trip up. My time is flexible. What will they do when you find out I'm just a regular person, but one of hightened perception......LOL! That must be it! Can't have you thinking that now can they?

Any beef aficionado knows A-1 hides the flavor of a well aged, dry cured steak..

Come on now, what were you thinking?
Perhaps a port reduction demi glaze with roasted garlic and grilled portabellas would suffice..
or, a classic bearnaise with fresh tarragon..hmmm
Or just a dab of butter, salt, and fresh ground pepper..my favorite

Mav has business to tend to and we'll discuss our steak adventure when he's completed his tasks at hand..

til then Crusader..

Thank you and we'll keep you posted..
Why not food/ better for the soul than all this talk of corruption before dreamland time.

Democrant, actually, I think Ned has a good point. The blog commenters do reflect the political attitudes going on.....
Now, just in my opinion, I agree with Rosanne Barr, who says it's mandatory for the Republicans to always have a "sneer" associated with their comments. As if the person dis-agreeing with them is lower than dirt.
I have felt that sneer myself from a few on here, and see it flung towards others on a regular basis.
This is part of the deep anger at these past 8 years! Some of us are so sick of the sneering and the holier-than-thou attitude towards not only the American people, but the whole world!
Honestly, we have forgotten the words kindness and respect.
It's all mean mean mean. Then, when you call them on it, they say "You're anti-American"... "You hate your country."
If I could count the number of times I've been told to "Go somewhere else then", I'd be a rich person.
Paraphrasing maverick here: " I love this country, it's the leaders I have a problem with."
Is that allowed???

Hey Dem,

So now the word is out about Palin's sister & her ex-husband the abusive state trooper. Is it true this guy used a taser on his 10 year old step son? What an animal. Still, it doesn't give her the right to use her power as governor to fire the trooper's boss, because she her power as Gov. could not penetrate that of the "blue wall" union.

How does she rate for the other thousands of women across the state of Alaska and their own "abusers"? Pass any laws to protect women from their abusive spouses? Like to see her record on that to one. This reminds me of the Clinton Whitewater scandal while he was governor. They even have a website called, "Clinton body count". If a Gov. violates the law, he/she should be up on charges, too. I've tried to remain registered as an independent, but as hard as it is to sit and watch the local/state cronyism and hack jobs, I just can't bring myself to vote on the republican ticket. I'm beginning to think the qualifications of public office does not include integrity, honor, or respect. More like just being a criminal in a nice suit.

Buzz,

possee's deductions are accurate. You do bring out the very worst in me, and so do your other trolling groupies. I'd rather debate in a healthy manner rather than be dragged into the mud wrestling match with posters who sound like they belong at the local bar. You instigate every argument with me and you admitted it, so what is there to say? As far as beating up the lebos, I found myself working among a few of the G&L community who also abused their power. Problem was, the manager was also a gay woman who had very little empathy for how the straight women in the office were being treated by the abusive co-workers. Sure, I've had compassion for the gay issues. Two of my tenants are gays and I know they don't have an easy time renting to the older generations in my town. They're great tenants. There are good and bad of all types, but still doesn't give one a right to abuse and exploit. Judging people by character is what counts. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

A high-five to Cru on the necessary discrimination between old-school after-work bar-joshing and the attempt to use Walter's bandwidth for something similar. The late unlamented hamalcar, who as I can deduce from Comments above us... is still with us under another name... tried to manifest the dingy walls of a digital tavern around us late last spring... and having had alcohol-warped parents, I had to object in the strongest possible terms. We're here to keep our wits sharp, NOT to take the edge off. That said, let all be on notice that patterns of insult reveal more about the the character deficiencies of the insulter than of the insultee...
