How Low can it go?

Christy drops to $2.79 cash, $2.89 credit
Sav-On lowers regular to $2.98

By Walter Brooks

When Christy's of Cape Cod lowered his price to $3.09/$3.19 last week we saw one of the longest series of comments on a blog since the McCowen trial, see post below this one.

christy-whoopie_250
Since some of our commenters don't know what a WHOOPIE PIE is, we reproduce Christy's online ad promoting them above.

But things got even more interesting last night as prices started dropping all over The Cape which has always seen higher prices than just over the canal.

On my drive to Hyannis for dinner last night (Alberto's, King Salmon with a sun dried tomatos in a Madeira wine sauce) I saw that the price for regular at the Sav-On station on Willow Street was $3.09, but by the time I drove home two hours later it had dropped to $2.99.

Back home I turned on my PC to see an email from Christy tipping me off to the fact that he was going to drop his prices this morning, but this most accessible politician-entrepreneur "doubled-down" and is now almost back to the price of a year ago, $2.89 if you use a credit card and $2.79 if you use cash.

Way to go, Christy - now let's hear from our favorite scold DemocRant who may still be asleep since he not only watched last night's debate, he wrote about it in this Blog this morning.

Don't fall for it. Christy is one smart cookie. Sure, he lowered the gas prices. In the retail business it's called a "loss leader" you come in for the cheap gas and walk out with a "Whoopie Pie". What you think your saving on the gas is hidden in the profits of the "pies".

It certainly seems to an out-of-stater that there is an acidic relationship with Christy. All I can say To Mr. Mihos is come down to Rhode Island and I will gladly buy a Whoopie Pie for 2.79 gasoline

Walter, I complimented Christy for lowering his prices last week. When a high five is appropriate, he gets one. It still doesn't explain the summer pricing issues. Cumby's is worse anyway-pricing and whoopie pies.

Sure Andy, sure. You just don't get it. Whoopie Pies have 1400 calories... it's pure uncut sugar...more addictive than crack.

You start out with one or two a week, next thing you know you're washing down 5 a day with a Yahoo. The extra pounds you put on mean less gas mileage and you can't drive past a Christy's without shaking. You try and get some help... then Christy lowers the gas price again, of course you need to "go in" to get your .10 off... and there they are, staring you in the face next to the register, your heart pounds, you begin to sweat... one whoopie pie won't hurt me... and you cave in. Then you notice the milk... 2.99 gal, is there any better way to wash down the pie..... i don't think so..... it's a vicious cycle.

I bet if Christy GAVE you the gas free, some of you would accuse him of loss leading up the wazoo! Or maybe it would be a conspiracy to capture your thoughts. Put your aluminum caps back on and fill 'er up!

I wish Christy would come to Nantucket and sell us gas for that little, we are still paying $3.98 a gallon. But he can keep those whoopie pies over there, I don't need any more temptations.

whoopie pies are good for you---don't listen to the liberals on the value of whoopie pies. nantucket has outlawed my operation because we are a chain of stores--no matter we are headquartered on the Cape and operate totally on the cape.

Odd how gas prices are dropping dramatically right before the election to decide the successor of oilmen Bush & Cheney. Odd how I'd predicted that a year ago by checking the Machiavelli Playbook.

Democrant [Member] writes:
Actually, I hope this does not motivate people to be less conservation conscious than they had been at $4+/gallon. This just shows how artificial the price per barrel thing is, to drop by almost a half of it's previous high. And to give Christy credit again, I think he wrote about the affect of the speculators on oil prices.

However, consumption of all these whoopie pies are going to affect health premiums down the line ;)

$2.83-2.87 through Buzzards Bay and Wareham.

Don't disparage Whoopie Pies until you've had the raspberry one or the choclate/peanut butter one.

There's also a cannoli place in Wareham that selld the pies slathered in cake frosting, which is about as good as you can ask for. We'll send Leah or Elle down with the camera to investigate.

Seriously, what's a Whoopie Pie? I'll have to check them out next time I'm in Christy's.

I guess I'm not into sweets, except for baklava and cannoli. "Leave the gun--take the cannoli." One of my favorite lines.

First Christy: touchee, to you, and last week you said you saw it going below $3 a gal. hats off to you,
Demo-: Unfortunitly remember the 70's did we learn from our mistakes then, No prices dropped back then slow rose and so did our appitite for driving an big gas hogs again, we can all hope better this time.
Solon: Even I know what a whoopie pie is. Every now and they you have to crawl out from your rock, put the absynth down and go to Christy's and get a whoopie,, Its good for the sol (excuse me Sol) and will help offset Christy's loss in profits from lowering the gas prices. We have to help our local politicians.. LOLOL
Ned: Please,, good theary but it holds as much water as the conspiracy thearies. Is a thinker though..

Christy has at least taken the initiative to be the leader of the pack when the gas prices are going down. The coupons this summer saved me money. I always checked on mass gas prices to see who was running lower prices and felt that with the coupon I did better. I have never bought a woopie pie either, but I just might have to try one after reading all the comments about them! Any chance of you running for Governor again Christy?

So here's praying the Cape gets through this meltdown in short order with as little pain as possible. thanks again all. christy
