McCain Strikes Out Swinging

A deal closer, if it already isn't

Well, McCain had his best half hour at the start, but that was it. Once again, post debate polls showed that Obama won the third and final debate. Most importantly the CNN poll breakdown of independents and the CBS poll of undecideds both favored Obama. If you favored either man, nothing happened that would sway you, it's in the middle that this race is being fought and won by Obama.

McCain is clearly coming across as angry, disdainful, and prone to exaggeration. For example, he accused Obama of voting against Justice Breyer. Slight problem, Breyer was confirmed in 1994. Not the only, but perhaps the most obvious time that McCain displayed his desperation.

Certainly Obama had opportunity to attack McCain, (the Palin question, times when McCain's foreign policy judgement has been suspect) but the strategy was to not go there. Finally, as one of the CNN talking heads mentioned, McCain's closing was about him. It's not about him, it's about, as Obama took opportunity to note, the American people.

Off topic of the debate, but not of the election is how Governor Palin has been noting to audiences now that she was cleared in the release of that report on the firing of her brother in law. I guess we can add the report to the list of things Sarah Palin does not read.

Rumors are in the air also that Colin Powell may endorse soon. The rumors also suggest that it's not for McCain. Rumors can be wrong, but Powell endorsing Obama would be a huge deal; I dare say a deal closer, if it already isn't.

Democrant:No matter how John McCain did in the debate you would put him down anyways. Now how can the Democratic Party support Obama. All the questions about Mr Ayers has a tie to it on Mr Obama's background. You see Mr Obama was a member of a wing of the Democratic Socialists of America. The New Party, was in Chicago in the early 90's to the mid 90's. Mr Obama was a member of the New Party in 1996 and was endorsed by this wing of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Mr Obama is a Socialists. He clearly stated this with the plumber he met with his statement to distribute the wealth, gee, doesn't this sound like a Socialists? Be very careful on what you ask for on November. A Vote for John McCain is a Vote for America.

Hey YT, sorry I complimented McCain for starting strong, I forgot I shouldn't do that, lol. The polls cited indicated McCain got creamed again, again my apologies for your guy doing poorly. If I was in the mood, I'd take the bait, but you know, the scare tactics of the wingnuts that McCain has adopted.... haven't those been effective! Most people understand a progressive tax system, I guess Warren Buffet must be one of those socialists also.

Obama also said he's proposed cuts to match new spending he wants. However, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that Obama's plans would add a net $281 billion to the deficit.

The trouble with our elections is that too many people use polls instead of brains to make decisions.

From Reuters: "Two quick polls after the debate, by CBS News and CNN, judged Obama the winner. Obama was also considered the winner of the first two presidential debates."

I watched all three debates, and I do not consider that there was a "winner," as in a boxing match. Both men stated their cases, and you either agree or disagree. "Winner" in this case, like beauty, is in the eye--and ear--of the beholder.

Both candidates have made good points and not-so-good points. Neither one has got it completely right. Just make sure you vote, and vote your conscience--forget polls. They do not speak for YOU.

Remember Harry Truman, my favorite president. A poll on the eve of the election would have probably shown that 90 percent of the country thought Tom Dewey had a slam-dunk.

Last night McCain came across as an angry, desperate, out of touch candidate for President. He's not a servant of this country he is servant of the Rich and Conservative. He is not a candidate for change, his healthcare and tax cuts favor the rich. His energy policies are old, he has nothing new to bring to the table.

Solon, I agree with you. If you are inclined towards D's, you think Obama did great. The R's think McCain did great. The debates and the campaigns are really about where the independents are, and how you get to them. Increasingly, they are also rejecting the type of negativity that McCain has exhibited personally, in ads and in people yelling out things like, "Kill Him!" at Palin rallies. She is far more scary than McCain.

Obama displayed eloquence, class, and intelligence. He tried to stay on track with the real issues but had to spend time defending false and unfounded accusations. McCain is no match for Obama who clearly won this final debate based on his brains, character and temperment. If McCain can't get it through his head that if "Joe Plumber" does NOT gross 250K annually in earnings, he will not be affected by a tax increase, he's really dense and the real Joe Plumber didn't fit his sorry example. He is out of touch with the middleclass and clearly for the already RICH.

The Obama campaign game plan was to stay on message, stay calm and not engage in a tit for tat with McCain. Hell, he even gave up a chance to even gently make a remark against Palin, as easy a target as there is. Very disciplined performance in not taking the bait.

By the way, of all the debates, props should be given to Bob Schieffer, who did a very fine job in getting the candidates to engage each other.

Isn't it great when we are more interested in answers regarding "Joe the Plumber" than the failing economy??
First off, Joe has no license to be a plumber,{says he does not need one}, and the company Joe wants to buy has one other employee; his boss,Mr Newell. John McCain ought to spend more time coaching his running mate about where the Northwest is in this country. Last I knew, it was not in New Hampshire.

Isn't it a great country??

Cause he's old? ...What? just go to Vietnam Veterans against John McCain. This is serious stuff, and you don't hear a peep. And I want to see Hagee out there like Wright was. And AIP's statements as well. Out there every day over and over again. "Liberal" press? On what planet? it's all slanted in favor of McCain. And Palin is protected from the press by Secret Service agents. What's she got to hide? Her foaming at the mouth for blood rallies? Ugly sells, and they are ugly as can be.

I do like how Buzz picks the one narrower category in the Gallup polling, ignoring the 6 point lead in the overall poll :). No post debate numbers included in that, by the way. McCain may well narrow the margin, I wouldn't doubt that, but if you look at where the game is being played, and where McCain is having to play defense, it ain't so good for him. In addition, you also have the unknown factor of people who say they will vote for a African American, but don't behind the curtain, versus an expected increase in turnout among black voters.

Dem,

Getting a little nervous...heh? Here comes the October surprise. Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live. Watch her close the gap a few more points.... I can see the sweat beginning to form on your brow.

Just as an aside. What's up with Deval and all the jobs he was bringing to the state? Now, he's cutting jobs.... Yes we can... maybe we can't!
10/17/08 @ 9:02 am
Democrant [Member] writes:
Buzz, I don't sweat this. Certainly the idea that the Obama campaign is taking anything for granted ain't happening. Organization and money is pretty helpful :). More than SNL ;)

I didn't know Deval was responsible for the country's economic downturn, thanks for the update :). Actually Massachusetts unemployment remains below the national average, 6.1 to 5.3% in September. From Forbes-
"New jobs were added in the trade, transportation, utilities and government sectors, while the construction, manufacturing, education, and financial sectors lost jobs."

Well start subtracting those government jobs. No surprise that the financial sector lost jobs. A friend of mine works for MFS in Boston and the "L" word- layoffs, has been floating. Yes we can or maybe we can do better than the nation as a whole. I don't think the cuts are over, my guess is that revenue will continue to tank. Everyone is going to gt some pain from the national problem.

I am voting for Obama so we can get rid of Deval Patrick, his promises to reduce property taxes, and hire 1000 new cops have never happened and it's pretty clear that his spending ideas have put the state budget in a free fall to the tune of at least $1,500,000,000.00. If Obama gets elected I think there is a 99% chance Deval will take a job with him.
10/18/08 @ 12:42 pm
Democrant [Member] writes:
I didn't know that ideas cause shortfalls. So where does this 99% chance come from, that they are both... gasp(!), black? By the way, google up something like "state budget crisis" and you'll find the problem is not a Massachusetts one, it's everywhere. As I mentioned elsewhere, at least our unemployment rate is much lower than the national rate. Here's the hard thing to show about property taxes- local government funding from the state was increased this past year. What do you think would have happened to property taxes, or town budgets if it wasn't?

As for Obama, follow his money. Where did he get the money for his colleges? Where did he get the money to get into Harvard Law School? Who voted him into the job at the Harvard Business Review? Why did Obama head to Chicago of all places to take a $12,000 (yuk, yuk) per year job? Why didn't he take a job on an Indian Reservation to help them community organize. Community Organizer -- Bull. Twenty years with Reverend Stewart and unknown years with Bill Ayres and Rezko have to stick. It is outrageous to think that this man isn't loaded up with Socialistic, non-authoritarian, and weak character issues that have not been touched on. He is learning the regular left Dem. line and is afraid to veer from that for fear of losing votes. I would like to see him in the cockpit of a jet, taking off from a carrier in the middle of the night, and being shot down and held prisoner for five years. By comparison, Obama is an empty suit with a silver tongue. I bereaves me that so many followers of Obama are so tied to the party line that their vision is clouded. I pity the Dem. They have no backbone.

Nice try John, well, not really to be honest. After all, Obama has also destroyed 3 fewer planes than McCain did while he was in the service. It's a slam dunk!

With "righteousness" at our backs, the winds of "change" will sail as never before.

The tide has swung and America gets what it wished for.Thank goodness!

The likes of "Buzz' will be silenced forever,Mav will be sequestered, and a mass bonfire of McCain signs will burn in every town square in victory over the oppressors.
We will rout the opposition from their homes and return them to the homeless and less fortunate.

All opposition party assets will be absconded and redistributed to the poor and less fortunate.

All opposition corporations and small businesses will be taxed to submission.

All media will become property of the state under one news outlet.
The children of the opposition will be sent sent to new federal schools for reindoctrination.
Fox news will be bought out by the Federal Govt and become the OPR.
The UN will oversee all domestic protection for the continental(formerly known as the United States)borders.
All private gun ownership will be outlawed.

Peace will once again reign over the world.

amen
