Lobster Rolls on the Road
Over dunes, on bikes trails, we will search for lobster tails as we move on a search for good rolls.
On the beach, to Mashpee , even off to old Wellfleet, as we move on a search for good rolls.
So its eat, eat, eat. We soon won't see our feet. As we move on our search for good rolls.
If you watch televison and viewed a show or two about New England chances are you have seen some good looking lobster rolls. Shows like the Phantom Gourmet, Chronicle and T.V.
Diner are just a few. But where on Cape Cod is that perfect roll ? Of course, that all depends on what you consider an essential part of that perfect sandwich. Some like just a hint of mayo while others want celery and lettuce. Some say the roll has to be a hot dog bun lightly toasted on both sides while other say just serve it on a simple fresh hot dog roll. As long as it has lots fresh chucks of lobster, then you are close to heaven.
Living here on Cape Cod a lobster roll is just down the road a ways or around the bend. But finding your own favorite place can be a little time consuming.
My own favorite is one that I heard about from Billiy Costa of T.V. Dinner and is that of the Raw Bar (www.therawbar.com) at the Marketplace in Popponesset or at the Ocean Street dock in Hyannis. It is served up on a untoasted large hot dog roll. Simple fresh chucks of lobster meat tossed ever so lightly in a mayo dressing. But what makes it so great is it huge size as it is filled with over a pound of fresh chunks of lobster meat and no fillers. Each bite delivers that fresh from the ocean taste and although you may want to eat it all, I am sure you will have some from later on in the day. The Marketplace location is simple and casual in a open air setting on picnic tables and the dockside location in Hyannis is small but cozy as you sit on bar stools or opt for alfresco dining outside. Some say its a little pricey at $25 but with its great taste and good size its worth it. They also have a smaller roll for those who are of faint heart and hunger for $16.
Sesuit Harbour Cafe (www.sesuitharborcafe.com) has a lobster roll cruise in the summer and you can also find it at their cafe down in a somewhat hidden spot in Sesuit Harbour . Here the atmosphere is casual and outdoors on picnic tables with great views of parsailing and seaside fun. The lobster roll is served simple on an untoasted roll with lettuce as a base and a celery and mayo mix. Its simply good and for $16.95 served with fries.
Kreme and Kone (www.kreamnkone.com) in West Dennis on Route 28 serves up lobster roll that many locals have recommended as a favorite. Their roll is simple served up on a hot dog roll with a very light mayo dressing but they supply a side container of the mayo dressing should you decide you want more. It's casual dining and it's family-friendly from a great family owned business and the price is reasonable for an average size roll at $13.95.
Another great place with great views of the harbourside in Hyannis is the Dockside (www.thedocksidehyannis.com) where dining is casual indoor or on the open air deck. They serve up a simple roll on a toasted sub with small pieces of fresh lobster tossed with a light mayo dressing served on a bed of lettuce. It comes in two sizes, a small for $19 or a large for $26 served with fries. It's simple and it's good but some how my hunger always leads me to the Raw Bar and I prefer the Marketplace location.
The season has ended all too soon and my search is somewhat confined to indoors but never the less is ongoing and as usual I am seeking help for all of you who read the blogs.
I am looking forward to JT's opening in Brewster so that I might try their Hot Lobster Roll with a side of drawn butter.
Hmmmm Could be good.
Happy Dining to all.

The Raw Bar in Popponesset. Also, on the oppisite side of the bridge, that little take-out joint along the canal near the herring run has great lobster sandwiches.
Who eats the bread anyway??

About This Blog
A nurse of thirty-something years, I have transported myself to this somewhat quiet "island" for a peaceful existence more in tuned with people and nature. I will share my views and experiences of living as a Cape Cod Washashore.
This blog will follow the journey of doing what Cape Codders do to survive - the trade off for a higher cost of living once that bridge is crossed. All to find our peace on picturesque beaches, inhaling fresh salty air, enjoying nature and finding art around us and in ourselves. I will share my views on all that the island has to offer.
