A Couple of Cravings & Apple Crunch

Have you ever had a craving, you know the ones that get you up at 2 am growling in your stomach, or the craving that wakes you up and pokes you and says "I'm hungry for some donut holes, will you go get me some." Well as I am writing this there are 2 memories on this.

First, I have 2 cravings...ok I have a lot more when it comes to the Cape but for this walk down memory lane I have 2. I am not a big craver of chocolate, but there is still one place that I have to go every summer and that is for my truffles at Chatham Candy Manor. I finally finished the box that I was milking out since vacation this year and I am all out.

Every now and then I will go the refrigerator and peer in looking for those delectable dollops of delicious decadent truffles. Do I need them, no, as I think I am still trying to recover from this years vacation. But oh what a wonderful memory, of walking down Main Street, looking in all the galleries, the shops, and the leather store. Just strolling along without a care, watching the people go in and out of all the different places as the warm day passes into a cool evening. (OK, it was 29 degrees this morning, just the warmth is a memory right now.) But just the laziness of the day finished with a small box of Manor Truffles...yum.

Second is when I want good ice cream, for me that would still be Sundae Schools. Now I know there is a debate that could rage on and on about who has the best ice cream on the Cape. But this is my memory and for me Sundae Schools is my best. This year it was fun to walk in and see Samantha Brown's picture on the wall and find out that out one of our favorite travel techies had been there. Then to come home and turn on the TV and watch the stories of where we had just been. The major problem is I then see all the wonderful flavors up on the wall behind the counter, and the menu on the big white board with all the Sundae's and scoopings and banana splits listed on it and my mouth wants to take a flying leap into the television to get some.

A carmel or hot fudge sundae with a mocha chip ice cream or the Khalua Chip ice cream, topped with real whipped cream and the cherry. Yes there are a couple good and ice cream shops here in central Ohio, one very old and established name... but it just isn't the same. When I want a sundae I want it from Sundae Schools, with all the wall hangings and pictures and college pennants.

Ok, now that I have just gained about 7 pounds sitting here salivating over these wonderful treats. So what are your treats, what do you crave? Like I said there are many more I could go on about, but for tonight, as I am wishing for either one of these if reminds me of how much I miss the Cape.. But that is part of the mystery and lour of the Cape, all the wonderful things we want to come back and experience over and over again. Well until that day... here's to the memories and my cravings will just have to wait for another day.

This is week 4 and we all like desserts. It's still fall and I still think of apples this time of year. So we get another apple recipe. This is another one of those handwritten ones from the wife's Mother's collection. This is quick and easy and great when you need something in a pinch and the kids could help on this as well. Please note there are several variations to this out there, so if you have seen this before, give it try now. We know this recipe is at least 25 plus years old.

Apple Crunch

  •     3 or 4  apples sliced   (your favorite tart variety)
  •     3/4  cup quick oatmeal
  •     3/4  cup brown sugar
  •     1/2  cup flour
  •     1/2  cup butter

Put sliced apples into buttered 8" round pan. Combine oatmeal, sugar, flour and butter in a bowl and mix well. Sprinkle mixture over apples. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and milk.

About This Blog

A rose covered Cape Cod cottageMy name is Stephen G. and I do not "live" on the Cape (except in my rose-covered dream cottage above), but I love the place even more because of that. I have been a summer visitor since 1965, and I am obsessed with Cape Cod as only a long-distance lover can be. Here again my family says I have a problem, that I need to be committed (to the Cape that is), because of my obsessiveness about it.

I work in the health insurance industry because my family likes to eat and have a roof over their heads and I like to be able to pay for my vacations to the Cape. I am passionate about my art work and hope to make that my main job someday.

Please let me know if you agree with the tales I tell, and also let me know if you do NOT agree.
