Join Manso in the slammer; courtesy of RMV

Courtesy of your friendly Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, you are all cordially invited to join Cape Cod author Peter Manso in the slammer for not renewing your auto license or registration when it expires.

As you know by now, the state does not send out notices for gun license renewals, so it is easy to find yourself, an honest and faithful citizen of the People's Republic of Massachusetts, inadvertently in violation of the state's gun laws.  Famous author Peter Manso found himself in such a situation, and now he is facing a heap of trouble.

The fix for such a situation is simply for the state to send out license renewal notices, as does the RMV.  Oh, excuse me.  As did the RMV.

Now the RMV has joined the dumb and dumber club.

Effective immediately the Registry of Motor Vehicles will no longer be mailing out license renewal applications or reminders to renew your driver's license (http://www.mass.gov/rmv/ under "Alert").  It is so easy and inexpensive for them to continue doing this as everyone is in their computer system.

It is now the drivers responsibility to know when their license is expiring and renew it on there own.  This may be a surprise to all of you since there has been no public information sent out about these changes.

Mailings Eliminated

The RMV will no longer mail out the following materials to customers:

  • License renewal notices
  • Mass ID renewal notices
  • License reinstatement letters:
Letter sent to a licensed customer when his/her license is reinstated, provided that the license is still active
Letter sent to an unlicensed customer when his/her right to operate is reinstated
  • Registration reinstatement letters:
Letter sent to a person or corporation whose suspended registration has been reinstated
Letter sent to a person or corporation whose revoked registration has been reinstated
  • Vehicle Inspection reminder letters for vehicles that are overdue for inspection
  • Inspector license renewal notices
  • 7D license renewal notices
  • Driver's Education Certificates
  • Junior Operator Brochures for parents (still available in branches)
  • Change of address labels (customers can create their own)

Pull out your license, take note of your expiration date and make sure you renew it.  This is just a heads up so that no one gets pulled over and has their car impounded because they didn't realize they hadn't renewed their license.

Registrar Rachel Kaprelian says this will save money and that "preserving customer service and keeping wait times down is my number one priority in implementing any changes at the RMV."

That is Orwellian speak to the max.   This is just adding many more problems to the already extant problems of the RMV.  I don't believe that thousands of people overrunning the registry when they've suddenly discovered their license and/or registration has expired will result in "preserving customer service and keeping wait times down,"  much less in saving any money.

And our police departments already have too much to do with home invaders and crackheads than to write up people for unknowingly having expired licenses or registrations and impounding their now illegal cars.

Registrar Kaprelian, please don't add to the already considerable problems of the good people of the People's Republic.  Reinstate the RMV notices immediately.

Talk about putting a speed bump in the state's revenue system. Seems like the Motor Vehicle Department should change its name to 'moron' vehicle department. Oops, I forgot it's the RMV. Those tricky acronyms get me all the time.

What if we all had amnesia for the next few years? That would be a good way to get their attention and show them how ridiculous this move is.

Just another example of lazy government wanting us to do their work for them.

Will registration renewal mailings be stopped, or only suspended/revoked?

Jonathan,

When they list "license renewals" I presume they mean both driver and auto licenses. (In the People's Republic, they call our plates "license" plates, while every where else I've been they're called "number" plates, so I presume they mean both.)

But leave it up to the RMV to take this drastic action and make it so perfectly clear while at the same time not informing the citizens of the Commonwealth which they serve.

If you can interpret their web site, please have a go at it.

I received one e-mail stating the RMV used to be "public enemy number 1," and that they're apparently going for that title again.

This will take a letter from everyone straight to the governor. I'm sure he mandated spending cuts, but not this kind of blatant stupidity.

I've just sent my entire piece to the governor. I can only hope he, or some one empowered to initiate the proper action, will read it.

But it will take more than one. Flood his office with e-mails abouth this!

This is right out of the play book, reduce those services that have the biggest impact on the public, its in the same chapter as cutting teachers, and public safety personal. So that when the specter of a tax increase appears at the Golden Dome, the public is accepting.

Since almost 2/3 of the voters said don't roll back taxes (Q1 outcome), we have given the green light to Solon's progeny to raise our taxes, and to add new fees along with amending Massachusetts General Laws to remove local caps on fees that local communities can charge for things like building permits, business permits and the like. I see a permitted rise in the motor vehicle exercise tax, with a portion of the new increase if not all it going to the registry to 'off-set expenses.'

It is my opinion that Manso is facing a heap of trouble because the DA and Truro PD don't want his book published.
How about you flood the gov.'s office with letters about that??

RMV will produce revenue from those who will forget to renew. Put it on a calendar, reg and license renewal. State will always find ways to cha-ching residents.

Bitter, Manso made his own prison bed, he should cut a deal, pay a fine, drop the gray prose and be done already. Bob George has a major uphill battle to climb, worse than Camus.

As a transplanted NE type, down here in backward VA, it's nice to receive a letter that tells me I can save a few bucks by renewing for two years on-line. OK, I do. Of course, I have to get the vehicle emission tested every 2 years. But that links to my registry account as well. Now that we seem to have turned Democratic down here, I hope we don't start copying y'all up there.
