Glenn Wattley's anti-Cape Wind mission

Ex-coal honcho's anti-Cape Wind mission
Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound has a single purpose - Stop the wind farm

By Mark Rodger

It is ironic that Glenn Wattley, head of the opposition group to Cape Wind and former coal-industry insider, wrote a diatribe against Cape Wind that appeared here in the Providence Journal on Nov. 5 - the very same day that other news organizations were reporting that 87 percent of voters in 11 Massachusetts south shore towns voted to support Cape Wind in a non-binding referendum.

This overwhelming demonstration of public support is consistent with two independent public opinion surveys on Cape Wind conducted earlier this year, including one by CBS-4 Boston that found that 86 percent of Massachusetts residents support Cape Wind. The other public opinion poll, commissioned by the Civil Society Institute, also found 86 percent statewide support for Cape Wind and 74 percent support on Cape Cod and the Islands.

96% of Alliance funding from donations of $20,000 or more

Mr. Wattley represents the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, a single-purpose organization formed expressly to defeat Cape Wind and that according to internal fundraising documents examined by The Boston Globe gets 96 percent of its funding from donations of $20,000 or more, mostly from summer waterfront residents who would have a distant view of the wind turbines on clear days.

In seeking to pit one clean energy initiative against another, Mr. Wattley does not speak for most of the residents of Cape Cod and the Islands. He is completely out of touch with the overwhelming majority of residents in Massachusetts and Rhode Island who want to tap our clean wind-energy resources in Nantucket Sound and offshore Rhode Island for good jobs, cleaner air, greater energy independence and to take action on climate change.

Here we go again!

1. The recent vote on the South Shore was not simply for Cape Wind. It included all wind power projects. It is unfair to characterize it as a success for Cape Wind....more of a bag job.

2. Glenn Wattley's business career spans more than three decades, two years of which he spent working for a company that sold coal mining equipment. He also spent years as a vice president at Arthur D. Little for energy matters and a few years as a partner in globally influential consulting firm, Arthur Anderson...also in energy matters generally.

Virtually all of Jim Gordon's millions come from the gas-fired electric industry where he is still a player since he will soon begin construction of a $400 million + gas fired plant in Westfield, Ma. If Glenn Wattley is a coal guy Jim Gordon is a gas guy.

Mark Rogers knows all this since he was invited to speak at the annual Arthur D. Little Alumni Association meeting this past week. But, telling the whole story just does not have the same ring as telling the slanted version.

Mr. Wattley is in touch with realities. Cape Wind would produce energy at double the current cost AND require public subsidies; if Cape Wind could secure wind turbines, (to kill birds as a navigational safety hazard).

That Mark Rodgers op-ed doesn't address the bottom line is understandable and transparent.

Unless you're a voter from Hingham who subscribes to the Boston Globe.

Informed decisions can't be made by misinformed voters.

Between Wattley and Rodgers, one stands to gain by misinformation and obfuscation.

And it's not Mr. Wattley.

Go for the personal attacks---forget the facts---just keep it all personal. That's the time-worn tactic of the CW mission. don't answer any questions, don't provide access to any information, just send out the long and short knives all the time.

As you well know, Christy, the devil exists in the details. The facts do not support Cape Wind.

'Overblown: The Real Cost of Wind Power'

“A “load factor” of just over 30 percent is recommended for a wind farm to be economically viable. However, many of Britain 's onshore farms have been running at around 20 percent, with some in urban areas dropping as low as 9 percent. Oswald believes that overly relying on wind power will result in major power failures across the U.K. and an increase of up to 50 percent in electricity bills. While nothing comes close to the capricious aspect of nature itself, the industry also still suffers from some severe technical difficulties.”

World's largest turbine manufacturer Vestas' chief states offshore wind is twice as expensive as onshore, the topic of this article.

Offshore wind is then twice the cost of of onshore wind energy that's 50% more expensive-before public subsidies.

"Severe technical difficulties" are very expensive to acquire.

You may be a lonely voice but you always speak the truth.

Thanks. The facts are in the details.

Let's hope we can save Nantucket Sound for all that follow us.

The pantaloons are getting tighter by the day over the wind farm..

All energy business is co-opted by making money and it seems they parlay the notion that their objective is noble and out to save us from oil dependency and clean air for Cape Cod..

Supposedly the majority of pollutant particles over the Cape area are from the midwest...manufacturing and coal based plants..
So how is Cape Wind going to eliminate the pollutants eminating from the midwest?
and..lower Cape Cod electric bills by 75%?
and lower gas and oil prices for home heating?
and lessen pollution to Nantucket sound?

what energy based technology is the current polluter of Nanantucket Sound?

Please explain..
I am neutral as yet..

About This Blog

oped3An op-ed is a piece of writing, expressing an opinion. The name originated from the tradition of newspapers placing each columns on the page opposite to the editorial page. Thus the term "op-ed" is simply a combination of "opposite" and "editorial." The difference with this one, however, is that you can reply immediately by commenting below.
