Plymouth movie studio has detractors; Cape Cod, a brand you can trust; Tart success; New Cape book

Historic Plymouth OKs building $488M movie studio

"We don't need you; we've already got Plymouth Rock."
        - Laurien Enos

In this place sometimes known as America's hometown, schoolchildren and tourists flock to see Plymouth Rock, a replica of the Mayflower and the place where the Pilgrims and Mashpee Wampanoags Indians shared the first Thanksgiving meal.

But the staid and historic image of Plymouth could soon be tempered by a decidedly modern attraction: a $488 million film and television studio, complete with 14 sound stages, a 10-acre back lot, a theater, a 300-room upscale hotel, a spa and 500,000 square feet of office space.

The thought of turning Plymouth into a movie Mecca has won the enthusiastic support of many residents, but some don't like the idea of adding Hollywood to their history.

"We don't need you; we've already got Plymouth Rock," says Laurien Enos, one of just three of 116 Town Meeting members who voted last month against allowing the developers to build the studio on a golf course here, about 40 miles south of Boston... The News Times.

Savvy, well-informed home buyers like trusted brands
And Cape Cod is among the most admired

Pulte/Del Webb Builders is the largest builder in the Chicago area. In an average year, it sells more than 1,000 homes. Even in recent years, the company has averaged 700 to 800 sales per year, according to Chris Naatz, vice president of sales and marketing for the firm's Chicago operations, based in Schaumburg...

His dream home: A Cape Cod-style home with a giant front porch overlooking a beach somewhere in the northeast. Maybe Cape Cod itself?... Daily News.

Tart berry, sweet success
Cranberry growers no longer seeing red

Wareham cranberry grower Roseann DeGrenier can still see the changes wrought on her industry when the fruit's price crashed a decade ago.  "It makes me sad to travel along some roadways and see cranberry bogs abandoned next to homes," said Ms. DeGrenier, owner of Willows Cranberries. "You just know the scenario - the cranberry grower was not able to survive the downward thrust that the industry was in."

Some growers sold farmland as house lots or shut down their cranberry business altogether during the lean years. She said the stress contributed to her brother, John E. DeGrenier Jr., dying at age 57 in 2001. She said it is "heartbreaking" he is not around to enjoy the industry's recovery... Standard-Times.

Photography Book Uncovers Hidden Cape Cod
Photographer and cc2day blogger Christopher Seufert has booksigning at CBI

What do Edward Gorey, the Wellfleet drive-in, the Provincetown dune shacks, and a thunderstorm on Cape Cod Bay have in common? They're all featured in the latest coffee table photography book by Chatham photographer Christopher Seufert. Seufert will release "Cape Cod & Islands Views: A Photo Journal" just in time for the Christmas season on November 29th with a book signing from 2:00 to 4:00PM at the gift shop of Chatham Bars Inn.

The 80 page hardcover book, published through Seufert's company, Mooncusser Films, gives equal treatment to both the hidden corners and well traveled landmarks of all the towns on the Cape, including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. "I made a concerted effort to avoid what I see as the the Cape's over- photographed landmarks- lighthouses, tourist attractions, overturned boats, and lobster buoys, says Seufert. "That terrain is now extensively covered by the existing body of Cape Cod photo books from every angle."

Most recently Seufert's photos have been featured by the Weather Channel, the Massachusetts Getaway Guide, Boston Magazine, National Public Radio, and he recently won the Kodak Photo Challenge for his image of a golf ball on Chatham's Ridgevale Beach. CapeCodPhoto.net .
