The madness of "Black Friday" can kill

Why I hate "Black Friday"

I have always disliked the term "Black Friday" used for the ridiculously insane shopping day after Thanksgiving.  To me it denotes the Black Death or the stock market crash and other terrible disasters.

blackfriday2_543Now it has taken on a life--or death--of its own.  I quote directly from the Associated Press report today.

Wal-Mart worker dies after shoppers knock him down

NEW YORK--Police say a Wal-Mart worker has died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers shortly after the Long Island store opened this morning.

Nassau County police say the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead about 6 a.m., an hour after the store opened.

A police statement says a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking him to the ground."  Police also say a 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital for observation.

Wal-Mart closed the store, citing a "medical emergency."

This madness of people getting up at 3 am or earlier and speeding to the local mall in search of "bargains," has always been totally incomprehensible to me.  I tell them they are literally crazy.  For example, at Cape Cod Mall, Macy's advertised that it was opening at 4 am.  Who cares?  Is shopping so important that we need to plan for it like a military pre-dawn attack?

It is shameful that we have become a nation of consumers, rather than producers, a nation that has raised consumerism high on the altar of individual and collective worship.  A society of consumerism is a weak society.  It is a fat and foolish society.

Do you really want bargains without having to kill yourself or anybody else?  Do you really want to help the economy by doing your Christmas shopping?  You can do both quite easily.  Buy gift cards (I would not recommend specific stores as so many of them are tanking, unless you are absolutely sure of the store and the preferences of the gift recipient), but general gift/credit cards from perhaps a local bank.

Then the recipient can purchase whatever he or she wants or needs and get an even better bargain--the week after Christmas.

When people say they are dying to do their Christmas shopping, there is no sense in having to take them literally.

I agree completely, Solon. This hype tripe IS insane, and only serves to bolster the bad elements, this moopolistic juggernaut that is today's retail economy.

Toys R Us, in California, two killed. One suspect arrested. Fight broke out between two teenage girls end in tragedy. No other details available at this time.

What the hell is wrong with people? As we get closer to the holiday, and more retailers go under, there will be more, only they'll be calling them "In the Red Friday"s. Save your money. Don't be stupid. The fiscal fun and games has only just begun. Reliable sources say it will be going down for two years or longer. Be creative with gifts. Macys 950 mil. in debt forces them to close 10 more stores. How many more?

Black Friday is a GOOD thing. It is not a a reference to some "dark side" of retailing. It is the day that business is so good, that customer traffic increases so much that many businesses are thrust "into the black" after having been "in the red" for the preceding months. In accounting and in business, "BLACK" is good. DJS

In accounting it's good, but in shopping it's insane. I prefer holiday denial until the last minute, thank you very much.

This mass hysteria is based on the self-delusion that one is better than nearly all other humans because one has performed a relatively simple task that neaerly all humans are capable of, but not willing, to to do.

"I'M going to get a BETTER bargain than ANYONE because I AM ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE who are smart enough to set my alarm for an early time and drive to a store. "

I have news for you, yentas: We're all smart enough to set our alarms, get up early and drive to a store. We just choose not to. Tell me, who do you see in those lines? Millionaires? The cognitive elite?

Maybe there's hope for the American consumerism mentality after all. But I doubt it.

I buy most of my presents online.
The people who were in that stampede that killed that poor man should or must be mortified. My God! How could one of those people even look at the stuff they bought from that Wal-mart without throwing up? It's absolutely horrible that something like this ever happened at all. If people don't learn from this- next time it may be a child. Mass hysteria of this sort should bring shame to us all and there are far more important things then getting into Wal-Mart in a ridiculous frenzy to buy crapola that no-one really needs.

Retailing USA style is a cultural phenomena - wedding dresses and fur coats at the old Filene's Basement, layaway at Leachmear, electronics, appliance and furniture at Polk Brothers Chicago where the customer was encouraged after Thanksgiving to: "lets make a special deal". Polk Bros. revolutionized discounting and set record for sold televisions on the day following Thanksgiving in the 1950's. These store owners, like so many others, were masters at the marketing game and our culture changed as a result of their success. Television sealed the deal. Remember Green Stamps at the Supreme Market? It's the culture. It's the way it is today.
