2001: Farewell to last USO center on Cape Cod
On this day in 2001, a farewell celebration was held at the last United Service Organization center - better known as the USO - on Cape Cod, at the Bourne Memorial Community Building and Senior Center on Main Street in Buzzards Bay.

Cape Cod's last USO was where the Bourne Veterans Memorial Community Center is today.
The center opened on Feb. 1, 1942, only two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor and America's entry into World War II, and provided food, drink and diversion to thousands of soldiers from nearby Camp Edwards heading for battle in Europe and Asia.
After the war ended, the building was converted to Teen Town for Bourne youth and eventually the town's senior center. The center was also used for public hearings and, for a small fee, birthday parties and other special events for local residents.
The Dec. 1, 2001 party at the center drew hundreds of former USO volunteers, veterans and local residents, along with municipal and state officials. The building was demolished a few months later to make way for a $4.8 million building on the site, the Bourne Veterans Memorial Community Center, shown in the photo above. There are only three USOs left in the Bay Sate, see here.

The best place on Cape Cod for family fun! The mini golf course includes three rivers and two fountains. After a game or bumper boat ride enjoy a cone of the "Best Ice Cream in the World". Located on Route 28A in Cataumet. (Bourne)
