Provocative film tackles breast cancer
Cape Cod coordinator for the Mass. Breast Cancer Coalition speaks
Education leads to prevention of a deadly disease, and prevention is the cure for that disease. That's the message organizers of a free screening of the film, "The Toxic Bust," hope to convey to those who watch it. "The Toxic Bust," described as a thought-provoking and visually compelling documentary about the preventable causes of breast cancer...
Director Megan Siler focuses on three cancer "hot shots" to explore the connection between breast cancer and chemical exposure in the home, community and workplace.
Following the movie, guest speaker Cheryl Osimo will be answering questions about her role in the film and the organizations she represents, including Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and its sister organization, Silent Spring Institute...
Ms. Osimo has been a devoted breast cancer activist and advocate since 1991, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41. She joined the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) because of the organization's commitment to telling the truth about breast cancer, and served as a MBCC board member from 1992-2003. Ms. Osimo is one of the founders of Silent Spring Institute, an independent environmental research institution founded by the MBCC, and is also the Cape Cod coordinator for the institute. She has been a catalyst in raising public awareness of the possible environmental links to breast cancer on Cape Cod and a strong advocate for the Cape Cod Breast Cancer and the Environment Study. Her commitment to this study is a result of her belief that the findings will benefit women not only on the Cape, but worldwide... Worcester Telegram.

Gay Pioneers Madson and Dietz Marry
Finally wed in Ptown this month
"We'd gone to Provincetown for our first honeymoon after being together a short time."
- Richard Dietz
Ron Madson and Richard Dietz of Brooklyn Heights, who won a six-year lawsuit with New York for the right to domestic partner benefits for all city workers in 1993, were married in Provincetown on November 12 after more than 38 years together. Their marriage is legally valid in New York State.
The couple had made plans to marry in California on November 12, but the passage of Proposition 8 there eliminated that right. "We never dreamed it would be approved," Dietz said. The couple quickly canceled their reservations, telling the airline and hotel why they were doing so.
"We'd gone to Provincetown for our first honeymoon after being together a short time," Dietz said. They had to go to a judge in Orleans, a nearby Cape Cod town, to get a waiver for the three-day waiting period after applying for a license. They wanted a justice of the peace to marry them, but were only able to find an on-call reverend who agreed not to mention a deity. "He took us to Pilgrim's Point, where the Pilgrims first landed," he said... Gay City.

The Cape Cod Wind Farm Project cannot be delayed any longer
Traditional Cape Cod views are inching closer to a little exterior remodeling. The Cape Cod Wind Farm Project, which has been paralyzed in a heated debate between numerous advocates and a few notable protesters, is soon to win the added support of the Bush administration. With this increase in federal backing, the project has reached the point at which talk must end and action must start.
Given that the project has been proven to provide a substantial amount of energy with limited environmental impact, the proposal put forth by Cape Wind, the company that would build this wind farm in Nantucket Sound, should be approved quickly.
Among the more serious complaints against the plant proposal was its potential danger of disrupting local bird and fish habitats, but recently, even the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that the wind farm will not be detrimental to either. Moreover, this has not been the only outside body to support this project: The Audubon Society, a national wildlife conservation group, has also given Cape Wind its backing. But the real roadblocks to approving the wind farm have always had to do with bigger obstacles than the flora and fauna of the surrounding area. The biggest barrier has been a classic “not in my backyard” mentality.
Many Cape Cod residents protested against the farm, arguing that these wind turbines will tarnish their ocean views, thereby lowering their property values. Although it is remains debatable how bad these views will be after the wind farm is built, it is besides the point: Citizens will have to make certain reasonable sacrifices if we truly want to commit to the cause of environmentalism and make changes in the way we are harvesting energy...
