You'd Better Watch Out...

 Sanity Clause is Coming to Town

As you can tell, gas prices just over the bridge are much cheaper than in, say, Falmouth. Even reindeers are making the hajj.

 I can save you the lengthy research by telling you that every station on the Cranberry Highway has regular unleaded for $1.65/gallon... even the full-serves. I did see one station at $1.79, but the locals tell me that he just has a gas station to draw people into his mechanic's business.

Once we were done bothering Mrs. Marcotte for pictures of her Reindeer Car, we shifted over to another car that had Clover the Bulldog in it. Clover was rocking his Patriots jersey, getting ready for today's game against Oakland.

For a cookie or two, he was good enough to pose for us.

As if we didn't have enough fun at the gas station, the third car we encountered was a guy with 2 generators and 5 propane containers in his truck. We asked him what section of town he was camping in.

"I just escaped New Hampshire this morning.... this (Wareham) was as far south as I had to drive to get a generator. I only got it because the guy at Home Depot chased me down in the parking lot to inform me that a shipment had just arrived. I figure I can sell then other one for 5 times the price up in the White Mountains."

Ah, that entrepeneurial spirit! This is what happens when institutional middlemen have decided it's not worth it to take out the loans to move product from A to B.

Alas, the same's gonna be true of petrol soon.

BTW, anyone know how much margin there is in gasoline sales? What happens to delivery stations if the price drops below a $1/gallon?

The guy I know says he makes six cents a gallon, but that was $4.09/gallon in August. I've also been told by another station owner that they (stations) actually do better when gas is cheaper, as high wholesale gas prices leave little room to gouge the price on their own sales.

Also, most stations are dependent on Other Things (lottery, smokes, soda) to make money, and use gas to draw people in to buy said Other Things.

Thanks Monponsett! Didn't know.

I wondered why OPEC and folks didn't just stop pumping. Learned this weekend: Many of those countries depend upon oil revenues to fund their gov operations. Indeed, they have a problem, 'cause the cost of this is like US$50/barrel. If oil is $40/barrel, they've decided to pump and sell anyway, just to keep their cash flow goin', even if they are losin' $10/barrel.

Don't forget. When figuring the gas prices, deduct the state and federal taxes and the actual price is around
$ 1.23

And isn't this Bush's fault too?

Bush is OK as long as there is a vengeful, liberal Congress preventing his agenda from being met.

Monponsett any gas station owner that tells you he's making only 6 cents a gallon profit is probably being taken advantage of by someone higher up the food chain. This past summer, Cape operators especially in the Falmouth area were raking in up to 60 cents a gallon profit before deducting credit card charges of about 12 cents per gallon. It was wholesale thievery. Oil Weekly publishes daily wholesale gas costs so if you subscribe its fairly easy to figure it out. Its been reported that 1 owner operates 9 sites in Falmouth so there's not much incentive to be competative. Where's the AG when you need him?
