Barnstable Police nab three suspects wanted for house and auto break-ins

john_winnell_252
On John Winnell's (above) Facebook page he writes he is single, graduated from Redding High School in 1988, was born November 25, 1969 and is employed as sales manager at Saturn of Hyannis.
Dana Durfee's Facebook page states he graduated from Falmouth High School in 1993, was born March 5, 1975 and also works at Saturn of Hyannis.
If you can't get on Facebook, there is a facsimile of Winnell's page below.

Two men arrested after Cotuit break-in

COTUIT - The Barnstable Police Department has arrested three suspects in connection with a series of motor vehicle and house breaks throughout town.

During the afternoon of Monday, December 22nd, patrol officers and detectives responded to a reported break-in at 1204 Old Post Road in Cotuit.  The homeowner had been out for a short period of time and upon returning to the home, discovered that jewelry and coins had been stolen from the residence.

A neighbor also described a suspicious male walking in the neighborhood prior to the theft. While checking the area for the suspect, Detectives Dan Turner and John York observed John Winnell, 39, of Yarmouth, and Dana Durfee, 33 of Hyannis, inside a vehicle in the Cotuit Plaza parking lot.  Durfee fit the description of the suspicious male seen walking through the Old Post Road neighborhood.

Winnell and Durfee have been under investigation for the last couple of weeks and are suspected to have committed a number of recent thefts from vehicles and homes in town.

Although Winnell and Durfee say on their respective Facebook pages that they work at Saturn of Hyannis, the sales manager at the dealership said Friday that neither man has worked there since at least 2007.

Jeff Lasher said he terminated both men after a short stay: Winnell because items began disappearing from the service department after he had been hired, and Durfee because of punctuality issues. Lasher also said Winnell never was sales manager at the dealership.

Lasher also said Winnell has worked for a number of car dealerships on the Cape.

Barnstable detectives stopped Winnell and Durfee on Stevens Street in Hyannis and recovered the coins and jewerly at that time.  Durfee had the jewelry and coins in his lap during the stop.  Additional jewelry and cash not linked to the Old Post Road break-in was also recovered at the time.  It is suspected that the additional cash and jewerly was taken during an unreported break-in in the Old Post Road area.

Both men were  arrested and charged with Breaking and Entering With the Intent to Commit a Felony, Larceny in a Building and Possession of Burglarious Tools.  Durfee and Winnell were to be arraigned Wednesday morning in Barnstable District Court.

Based on evidence discovered during the investigation, the two men will be charged in the future with several additional motor vehicle break-ins.

Winnell arrested for theft in 2007

Winnell  is no stranger to Cape law enforcement.  Winnell was arrested by Yarmouth Police early in April of 2007 after stealing $280 in cash from a wallet in a parked car at the Mid Cape Racquet and Health Club on White's Path in Yarmouth.

A member of the health club staff had reported a suspicious man matching Winnell's description to police.  After begin confronted by officers, Winnell admitted to signing the guest register at the health club, using the false name Mike Bell.  See the original story here.

Third man arrested on Monday after Osterville break-in

OSTERVILLE - At 8:45 p.m. Monday evening, Patrol Officer Dan Ruth responded to a report of a suspicious person walking around the Crystal Lake Road area of Osterville.   In an attempt to locate the individual, Officer Ruth began a foot patrol at which time he heard someone walking in the snow beside 82 Barnard Road.

Officer Ruth subsequently stopped and questioned Michael Lee, 25, of Osterville, as he exited the property.  Lee, who was carrying a flashlight, could not provide the officer with a reasonable explanation for his being at the residence.

Lee's footprints led to a broken window on the side door of the residence.  Lee was placed under arrest and charged with Breaking and Entering with the Intent to Commit a Felony and Possession of Burglarious Tools.

Based on evidence discovered during the arrest, detectives will be charging Lee for other thefts that have taken place in Osterville.

Barnstable town employees raise cash for co-worker after Christmas gifts are stolen

HYANNIS - Theresa Santos works with some really generous folks. Fellow town employees and members of the Barnstable Police Department raised over $800 to replace the $500 in Christmas gifts Santos had purchased for her family.

The gifts had been stolen from Santos' trunk on Monday after the frozen trunk popped open while Santos toiled away in the town hall offices.

I was considering going over to the Saturn dealership in Hyannis for a new car after the holidays.

OK so now . . . just let me see if I have my information straight:

I can walk into that Saturn dealer over on Bassett Lane - shop for a car, get quotes, apply for financing, negotiate a price with a salesman and the sales manager . . . the whole bit . . . . and I will likely be dealing with guys who ‘on-the-side‘ burglarize houses in the community?

This frakin’ Cape Cod never ceases to amaze me. I gotta get outta here. DJS

Have a wonderful New Year, sailor. All we need in this life is to be surrounded by the love our family brings and a few special friends. We can manage to get through all as long as they are by our side.

Happy Holidays to all my blogging buddies. Hope Santa is good to you.

ccreality,

Well, sorry to hear that, but think Honda is better way to go. I don't understand why they don't lock up the local crooks. It seems when Michael Sullivan was prosecuting in Boston, he wanted all in jail doing serious time. Maybe then, his buddy GW would promote him. Must be the "who you know and how much can you pay strategy", that gets them off.

The story does NOT state that either worked for Saturn of Hyannis.
A sidebar states that they BOTH list Saturn on their individual Facebook pages are their employer. THeir Facebooks pages still state that as of 10AM, Dec. 26, 2008, a copy of which we have in our files.

Folks, holding the Saturn dealership responsible for hiring these guys at one point or another is silly and stupid. Last time I checked, passing a CORI wasn't a requirement for someone to work on a car lot.

As far as the Saturn manager's comments are concerned, thanks for clarifying. Please disengage the Caps Lock key on your keyboard for future postings, however. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE YELLING.

i dont care what the face book pages say...obviously they are liars
im talking about you and your site
you grouped stories together (good job) to make it look like saturn of hyannis was responcible for ruining some ones xmas.. when its already tough out there you cost me yert more business
when we have been here for 25 years and i personally donate food to the salvation army food bank every week

if i were you i would write a reteraction or a full page definition explaing that we were not involved

Acerpo obviously is confusing the third item in the story about "Barnstable town employees raise cash for co-worker after Christmas gifts are stolen" with the first item about two past employees.
WE "group stories together" as he claims, but the reason is fair more simple - we group each day's Fire & Police stories in one post for the convenience of our readers.
We are happy to here that Saturn discharged these men after last year's run-in with the law.

acepro, I think the guy you need to go after is Winnell for saying he worked there if he doesn't. CCToday is only printing what is on his page. No retraction is necessary. Also, if you really are a general manager, you should be able to spell alot better. Makes me want to go sign a contract with saturn immediately.

well guys since the editor of this site doesnt seem to know the difference between the word "here' and the word "hear". i figured spelling didnt count for much here nor does the facts
but what is amusing to me is they write a story abour 3 diff scumbags that steal from peoples homes. and the blog goes directly into bashing the dealership. well as for your non regular jobs i apoligize, but i work hard long hours. not going to put up with it for a second. the website has the legal responsibility to make sure what they are printing is accurate and not hurting innocent non involved people
they can either write a compltete article stating that saturn has nothing to do with this or my lawyer will
12/27/08 @ 2:30 pm
somebunny [Member] writes:
acepro, all you are doing is proving that we should NOT do business with Saturn, beware of General Manager, he bites. And, we all work long hours as well, might I add, you seem to have time to blog *smiles* For someone working long hours, that is, absolutely. CCToday did not bash Saturn of Hyannis, and the disclaimer I believe absolves them of responsibility of what posters post. You might want to familiarize yourself with the commenting policies along the bottom.

This is an online newspaper acepro. You've obviously misconstrued some of the contents for your own purpose. Calm down and re-read what you are writing.

I apologize, in advanced, editors, for stepping out of line on the subject. :-)

I'm smart enough to realize that these two turds have departed ways with Saturn of Hyannis, it was also good to hear the sales manager recognized these guys for what they were and got rid of them.

With that being said, and I'll say it again... you're doing NOTHING to promote a good image of the company. Let it go.

Buzz says: "You've heard of the "First Amendment" haven't you?"

Yeah, have you?

The first amendment doesn't have a thing to do with what's going on here. "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..."

That's "congress," specifically. Again, not pertinent here.

No question that Acepro is flipping out over nothing, but let's not sully the discussion with red herrings.
