Taking the plunge on New Year's Day

Polar Bears, Run-and-Dunkers jump in
Men, women, boys, girls brave annual rites

On this, the first day of 2009, Cape Codders decided to test the temperature of Buzzards Bay.

Their considered opinion: The water was cold. Really, really cold.

With air temperatures hovering between 10 and 20 degrees, well below freezing, swimmers plunged in at Monument Beach in Bourne and at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth. Being rational souls, they plunged out again as quickly as possible.

Several hundred people watched at Monument Beach at noon as the aptly named Polar Bears engaged in their annual plunge, which raises money for the Bourne Food Pantry.

Slightly later Thursday afternoon, the Cape Cod Center for Women held its annual Run-and-Dunk at Old Silver Beach.

They were going to be called the Testicles Frozen To The Size Of Raisins Bunch, but that was taken by a Canadian nude beach volleyabll team. You don't want to have to defend yourself in court for something like that, kids.

I did it one year, capemom but for a group called CHiPS. They called it the CHIPS DIP. We did it as a fundraiser to raise money for the kids who were head injured living there. I think my nips are STILL frozen.

Possee,

LOL, couldn't agree more. Time for them to take a bath, instead of the Massachusetts taxpayer. If you ever read HCarr's book, you'd see how he describes the midget as giving away jobs, esp. within the MBTA. Cellucci created sweet package deals while now, the trains are ready for the scrap heap. Southie has their own dunk into the icy bay. Not for me. I'm all about comfort. Give me a warm whirlpool on a cool summer night, no ice for me!
