Forget marijuana--now it's about national security
Okay, I've given you potheads enough flak about the new marijuana law. Personally, I don't care if you smoke. Just don't smoke and drive. Endangering other people is verboten, whether it's liquor, drugs, or being old and blind and non compos mentis behind the wheel.
This is about national security. The new marijuana law has brought up some points about our law enforcement system--or lack of it--that apparently even prevent us from protecting America against terrorists.
According to the Boston Globe, officers have no way of determining the identity of people they stop on the street for smoking marijuana. Before the law was changed, officers could arrest them, or threaten them with arrest to force them to show identification. Now, they say they cannot force users to show IDs, and cannot arrest them if they refuse to identify themselves. And they say there is no penalty if a marijuana user gives a false name to a police officer.
"Cannot force users to show IDs?" In what other country in the world is a person not required to show ID to a police officer? "No penalty if a [person] gives a false name to a police officer?" In what other country in the world is this allowed? Go to Europe or anywhere else and you had better have your passport handy.
I can see a cop stopping Osama bin Laden. "Excuse me, sir, but you look like Osama bin Laden. May I see your ID?"
"You know what you can do with my ID and that blue-and-white camel you rode in on, infidel! I am peacefully smoking marijuana. I don't have to show you ID!"
"Then, what is your name?"
"Mother Teresa, infidel. What's yours?" (Osama's cohorts with AK-47s hidden in their pants legs laugh.)
They jump into their car, Osama floors it and pulls away. "America, what a country," he says. "Hey, maybe we should move here. Can get away with all kinds of camel poop!"
For a country where 3,000 people were murdered by terrorists and which is constantly under threat of even more horrifying attacks, we don't have to show police our IDs or give them our real names? What's wrong with this picture?
Merely identifying oneself to authorities of the nation you happen to have your feet planted in at the time does not in any way infringe on one's civil liberties. But blowing up Americans infringes on mine and yours. And, worse, ticks me off beyond description.
America, what a country. For its enemies. We need some serious rethinking of our most basic laws before we foolishly drive ourselves into extinction.

Come on Solon.... you're "one toke over the line" with this one.
I could care less who smokes or doesn't.
But to prevent us from protecting America is ridiculous. Legalize it! Yes. Stop us from checking ID's! No.

Re-read the title, "Forget marijuana..." How you defend something that hasn't even been attacked.
The rest of you, go back to your toking. By the looks of things, paranoia in extremis may be a side effect. Hmmm...have to report that to my narc friends who are spying on all of you this very moment.
Do we start with 'ID on demand'? Wouldn't it be easier to implant a chip?
The 'One toke over the line' thing is actually relevant.
Why was hemp made illegal in the first place? Yes, they were terrorists;
Henry J. Anslinger, Lammont DuPont, and William Randolph Hearst.
You are correct, Mr. Solon, it's not about Marijuana at all; it's about personal freedom and civil liberties.
I'm hoping I can earn these 'priviledges' after taking my loyalty oath and receiving my 'chip'.
As stated, smoking pot is not the issue, but national security is upmost.
Those who fear an Id check would be the first to holler when a terrorist was not id'd and subsequent deaths of innocents resulted.
The same crowd that fears govt wiretaps and decries waterboarding and subsequent torture techniques.
Problem is, there's no proof to them of a disaster prevented and, that the govt wants info on them for God knows what reasons..as if the average American holds such a threat...laughable..
smoke another one!

never smoked the funny stuff either
yea. Let's try that again. I'm not seeing anything wrong with showing my ID to anyone with the authority to ask.
Your thought "corrupt cops" betrays your posture as an idealist. You sit back and snipe while a lot of other folks do the heavy lifting.
Because you are unhappy with the hand dealt to you is not our fault. The fact that you are a cartoonist with a large vocabulary and no true artistic talent should not be held against anyone. Least of all the innocent participants on this blog.
Why don't you go enjoy a joint, take a quick peek in the mirror, relax and have a Happy New Year.

Man gets marijuana fine, has bigger problems
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
January 03, 2009
SPRINGFIELD — A Holyoke man was at least one of the first people fined under a new state law that decriminalizes marijuana.
Police said they found [the man] with less than a half gram of marijuana on him Friday, so he was fined $100 under a new law that went in effect that day.
But police say they also found 119 crack cocaine rocks and 45 heroin bags in [his] car.
He now faces a drug trafficking charge that carries a possible mandatory seven-year prison sentence.
Springfield police said they’d heard their marijuana citation was the state’s first, but that was not confirmed.
----------------------------------------
I can see your comments now, my friends, "Corrupt cops plant drugs to nail marijuana user. Waterboarding used to extract confession. Etc., etc., etc."
Have fun with it. I certainly am.
Sounds like the new law is alive and well.
Ned, you mean that you and I and Maverick won't be having tea and crumpets together? I was so looking forward to it. My social season is ruined.
"Sona si Latine loqueris" Sona means Make A Sound. Honking is one of billions of possible sounds. But to a Honkie it's music.
I don't know what you're upset about. I said from the get-go, "Personally, I don't care if you smoke [marijuana]." Second sentence. And probably nobody else does. The piece is NOT about marijuana.
No need for the ad hominem stuff; it's really beneath you. You can do better.
I still consider you my friend.
Buzz, you're one of the few people left on the planet that understands Latin (that includes you, too, Ned).
I guess you just don't get it and probably never will. The only "slap in the face" here is your slap in the face to rationality through your fanatic, inane interpretation of anything that suits you and your hostility against those whom your extreme narrow-mindedness deems in some way an imagined danger to something you can't even define.
You are off-topic, my friend, and have been from your very first comment, and you don't realize it. Very, very sad.
At least she's a lady. I suspect some of you guys are, too.

Let's give him a hug and wish him a Happy New Year.
Are you implying that some of us are really ladies?
Whom might they be?
Must be the sensitive types,ehh?
Can't wait for your next blog..

Bringing up Osama Bin Laden seems to be a sensationalist tactic to scare people. It's actually a great way to make people agree with you because, if they don't, they are at risk of being accused of terrorist support. Other than that, however, your argument fails to exist. All you did was set up an unlikely hypothetical situation as if it were a spoof on Saturday Night Live. Here's the spot where I would begin to argue against or for your points. But, since there are none to support your opinion, then I have nothing to argue against.
You would probably get a lot farther with your idea if you presented in a more logical manner.
It seems you have poked the hornets nest of intellectualism as you dared to post your point of view.
Continuous comments of omnipotent intellect (of all things stated)expound yet fail to grasp simple sacrcastic comments when posted...
Supreme intellect has clouded simple truths and reasonable debate...
as there is only one truth to all things, and, none but ONE, possess that stature.

or face the wrath!

But the point is the point.
Now please go on to something else. I have to write my next post, "Marijuana smoke causing global warming!"
Happy New Year to you all. Hugs to those who need them!
I would rather hug a tree than share space in your embrace.

A thought for the New Year. Let's give Ned some love. Might we all give a little something to the Cape Cod Needy Fund in Ned,s name.

When composing your next blog on the effects of marijuana and global warming.
use this link to encourage more imbibing as the earth's ice caps are cooling and increasing.
In fact they are at the same levels as 29 years ago..
Perhaps an increase of cattle flatulence (and pot smoking)will help the warming crowd increase the earth's fever!
Inquiring minds would want to know.
