Christy's Stimulus Plan for Massachusetts

What our state should do with this taxpayer money
No gas tax hike, no toll hike, cut Meal Tax, Death Tax and Capital Gains Taxes, eliminate 8,000 state jobs

By Christy Mihos

Now that Congress has given us two doses of unprecedented debt trainwrecks, $849 Billion to Wall Steet and $787 Billion to special interest insiders, and as Governor Patrick and our Legislature salivate over the proposed $10 Billion coming to Beacon Hill coffers,  I’d like to appeal to their better judgment and chart a plan for the rest of us mere mortals:

Most Important -
Pass Legislation to create the Massachusetts Office of Special Prosecutor with unlimited powers to protect us from the corrupt, as they will see the Federal Bailout as another feeding frenzy.

  1. No more talk of a gas tax hike.  The plan the Governor put forth would tax us $650 million—forever plus is subject to a cost of living increase.  Runaway inflation is coming---
  2. Forget the Governor's toll hike. Your Turnpike Board raised tolls in January 2008 in accordance with the Big Dig Finance Plan to cover the debt service. The next mandated toll hike comes in January 2014. Follow through on my 2003 Plan to sell the 11 service plazas and terminate all tolls west of Route 128. Immediately you will give those users a $120 million benefit-they've earned it. Terminate the MTA and merge all other transportation agencies.
  3. Terminate all talk of the tax hikes you put forward last month. All are regressive and hurt us all.
  4. Cut the Meals Tax to ZERO. It's $645 million per annum but the industry is on life support systems now. Closed restaurants do not pay property taxes and the job losses in this sector are vexing.
  5. Pass legislation to abolish the health insurance middle-men. BC/BS, Harvard Community, Tufts, all of them produce nothing and they have been instrumental in the double digit healthcare cost increases for decades. Our Doctors and Hospitals are clearly competent to manage our healthcare system.
  6. Terminate the Death Tax and Capital Gains Taxes. People are moving out of our state to avoid taxes and nothing is selling so be pro-active and declare that Massachusetts welcomes capital formation, and stabilize our population.
  7. Terminate 8,000 state jobs. Government is the only sector that has not right-sized. The 79,000 jobs the Governor represent the Washington stimulus will create can be augmented with the cut in the state government workforce.
  8. Do not hire another individual who utilizes the revolving door to enhance their PENSION. Aloisi, Simon, Mulhern, and so many more make a mockery of public service.
  9. Pass Legislation to cap all credit card interest fees to 5 points over Fed. Funds. These businesses are all Banks in essence and their rates are clearly usury.
  10. Most Important-Pass Legislation to create the Massachusetts Office of Special Prosecutor with unlimited powers to protect us from the corrupt, as they will see the Federal Bailout as another feeding frenzy. The State Ethics Commission is feckless. AG Martha Coakley is off on another self promotion for Senate so she's through.

Protect the rest of us. We're not Banks, Law Firms, Construction firms, or the Special Interests. The middle class is getting hammered. Small Business, bricks and mortar companies are in a deep struggle to compete and stay alive. Governor do this now and help ease this wonderful Commonwealth through troubled times. Do it not, and no slick slogan will protect you from a populace waiting for 2010.

How will 8000 more unemployed people help the State? Also, I don't know anyone who doesn't go out to eat because of the meals tax! Seriously! If you can afford to go out, you can afford the tax.

Christy, run as a republican or nothing at all. We can't have a repeat of the last election and you know that will happen if you run as an independent.

I love all of these ideas! 2010 can't come fast enough -- Christy has my vote, but I tend to agree that running as an Independent may affect his chances for a successful bid.

"How will 8000 more unemployed people help the State? " Well it will be 8,000 fewer salaries+generous bonus packages the Massachusetts taxpayer (employed, unemployed, retired) won't have pay!

Great ideas all, Christy, The size of the public sector has to be contained or it becomes unstoppable and we'll end up like California or France, where so many people work in the public sector that any measures to contain it get voted down. Even the Governator can't stop it.

Capenancy--see item #7 as a way of mitigating the loss of jobs. New jobs being created with Federal $$$ would mitigate that issue. We are grossly over staffed in government--the numbers are staggering, and the cost to benefit these employees can not be met at these current levels. Its the right choice to cut and rightsize.

Christy

Forget the repubs and independents..
Start a new party which reperesents the malority of independents, repubs, and dems whose parties have completely abandoned the base with no principles,no convictions, and abhorrent voting records.

Time for the gop to go as well as the democrat party..
all they represent is lobbyists, big contributors, and continued government growth.
Both parties have aggressively ignored us and pander to special interests..
placating us with the right words and wrong actions..

Christy, Thank you so much for sharing your ideas with us. You are a shining light in what feels like a very dark, and endless tunnel. It is so discouraging to see this tax and spend mentality, instead of reform. RUN CHRISTY RUN!!!!!

Hey Christy... is it true you have opened another store/gas station on Willow Street? Great ideas... now if we can just get someone to carry them out...

You don't go in and FIRE 8,000 people. You just don't do that to people that might rely on that as a sole source income for a family. Over time, don't rehire for open or vacated positions. Absorb them into other positions and hire people base on what they know, not who they know. Orleans court just went through that mess. most unfair practice anywhere is to hire who you knwow as opposed to what they know. That alone is why the MA government has gone in the tubes. How can anyone fire a friend after hirijng that person only because they were a friend. Firing on the spot, especially in hard economic times like these is the wrong way to fix things. But hey, why does Christy care? He's rich and doesn't need to get out of bed to make his money unlike the rest of us. Yes yes, you worked hard to get what you have. I know. So let the rest of us do it too and don't forget where you came from.

When did caring about someone's source of family income ever come in the way of all the lay-offs, "right sizing," "re-engineering," or other RIFs that business has been doing for years?

Karents2: I think any sensible people would figure that one out, even though in tough times large company's do just that. But attrition first, but unfortunately when you are over staffed and under budgeted something has to go and staff is it. If at home your income is less then you cant spend what you dont have or you get rid of the extras that cost. If not you go under,, same in government,, and the extra fat as got to go. sorry thats the hard truth.

Karen--in 2006 I proposed cutting the state labor force by 8,000. instead Governor Patrick, once elected hired 2,000 ! ! ! Believe the number is in excess of 80,000 who work for you. You can not sustain their benefits as they work and thereafter retire. I get up every day and go to work because I love it. Born and raised in Brockton--it will always be with me. Always.

Christy,

Deval was just delivering on his campaign promise.... more Massachusetts jobs! Being a businessman, I'm surprised you don't see it his way. After all, if Christy's was taking a hit financially, don't you just raise your prices to generate more revenue? Maybe a small toll collection for those wanting to come in the front door. Or maybe you could charge gas guzzling vehicles a higher price at the pump...see, simple solutions. If it's good enough for the state, it's good enough for Christy's.

hmmmmm, maybe a Whoopie Pie tax....that's the ticket.
