Aiming for compliance, the Bookstore Restaurant begins construction on a new septic system

The Wellfleet Bookstore, on the road to compliance

Photographs and Story by Peter Robbins

With an approved set of plans, and permit in hand, the Bookstore Restaurant began the long overdue project of building a new, much needed septic system.  After what seemed like an eternity of non-compliance and enforcement issues, the iconic Wellfleet Restaurant began work last Monday. Robert Our trucks and machinery carried soil to and fro as the parking lot was prepped for installation.  It was a long, and for some, emotional process.

As work began, passing Wellfleetians stopped to express their opinions.  One person felt a new septic was long overdue, and should have been built a long time ago. Others, although sympathetic to the owners of the restaurant, could not understand how they were allowed to operate without a license for so long.  Some praised the Wellfleet Board of Health while others pointed fingers and felt the issue should have been dealt with much sooner.

I count myself among those who are happy this issue has finally come to an end and look forward to the owners remaining compliant.  I know I am not alone in wishing the owners continued success in 2009!

Listen, they were in violation for how long? Talk about a sensitive area to be contaminating,It's about time. Thanks to the Board of Health for forcing the issue with people that obviously thought they were exempt from local regulations and laws. The same question still exists, Due they have a business license or are they still operating at what Wellfleet calls at risk. At whos risk? The Bookstores, The Towns , The people that eat or drink there I just don't get it. Lets ask the question that noone else has asked. Would any other restaurant in town be allowed this amount of slack? Check into that Cape Cod Today. There are eating establishments a lot closer to the water than the Bookstore, maybe an examination of septic conditions there would be of interest, perhaps even newsworthy. We are all greatful for the towns attention to this matter. Now lets take a look around, lets not wait for a problem to erupt lets nip them in the bud before they hurt us the residents. I would rather see us all fight to correct a problem rather than fight to cure or treat an illness.

Funny to think that this all really got going when young Mr. P did some selfish whining about the Pearl opening. Now he's neck-deep in s**t (literally) and the Pearl will be the new jewel of Wellfleet (again). Eco-cool and everything.
