Buchholtz, Kotsay, and Fenway food prices: Red Sox lint in the cranial vent

Accumulated thoughts while away on business:

  • Clay Buchholtz will be back in the majors by May 1, either for the Red Sox, following a Brad Penny setback, or for the Rangers, following a trade for catcher Taylor Teagarden or Jarrod Saltalamacchia (unless Manny Delcarmen is packaged in such a deal instead.)
  • Mark Kotsay will find it difficult to dislodge Chris Carter from his place on the Red Sox bench and will finish the year in someone else’s uniform. (So might Jeff Bailey, who was narrowly beaten out by Carter for a roster spot and, as last season’s International League MVP, could be included in a trade.)
  • Brad Wilkerson will retire from baseball following his difficult spring.
  • The new “Fenway Family Hour” of discounted Fenway Park food items will prove to be very popular (see announcement here) – but the price freeze on all items for the rest of the game will prove to be largely meaningless as fans still must absorb last year’s high costs of eating and drinking for the three other hours they’re at the game.
  • Jacoby Ellsbury will be a force at the top of the Sox lineup, though it will take a month or so for the plate adjustments he’s made to stick.

I refuse to give fenway the outlandish amount of money that they charge for food. I go to at least 10 games a year and usually eat at UBurger or Bertucci's before the game. The food is much better there. I also don't buy beer at the park, but smuggle a few nips of rum in and mix it with a coke that I buy. I pay enough for my tickets and refuse to enrich the redsox any further than that.
