Yarmouth Police officer injured in crash, two arrested on OUI, other charges

Officer responding to erratic driver is severely injured, two men under arrest - See VIDEO below

SOUTH YARMOUTH - On Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 7:08 p.m., the Yarmouth Police Department received a cell phone call from a citizen reporting that she was following a vehicle that was driving erratically, in and out of travel lanes, and the wrong way on a one-way street on Old Main Street in South Yarmouth.

While responding to the call Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Kevin L. Antonovitch, operating a 2009 fully marked Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser with emergency blue lights and siren activated, collided with a silver 2004 Ford F150 pick up truck at the intersection of Union Street and White Rock Road in Yarmouthport.

Patrol Officer Antonovitch and the operator and passenger of the pickup truck were injured and transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis by members of the Yarmouth and Barnstable Fire Departments suffering from non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic in the area was diverted for approximately four hours as members of the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit investigated the crash.  A Crime Scene Investigator from the Barnstable County Sheriffs Office assisted in evidence collection and management.

At approximately 7:42 p.m. the vehicle originally reported as operating erratically, a 2008 gray Toyota Tundra pick up truck bearing Massachusetts registration 636DA7 listed to Brian L Maciel, of Oak Bluffs, sideswiped a Bucklers Towing Service tow truck in the parking lot of the Bass River Car Wash Old Main Street and fled the area and is currently wanted for leaving the scene of a crash.

Yarmouth Police Arrest Both Operators for OUI

While conducting a follow up investigation to the earlier incidents, Yarmouth Police Officers arrested the operator of the 2004 Ford F-150 pick up truck, David N. Trani, 23, of Yarmouth Port, based on results of interviews and testing as well as an inventory of his vehicle.  Trani was treated and released from Cape Cod Hospital and is currently being held at Yarmouth Police Headquarters on $2,500 cash bail.

At approximately 11:50 p.m. Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers located the 2008 Toyota Tundra in the parking lot of a South Yarmouth motel.  The Toyota had fresh damage on the right front side that matched the damage that occurred from striking the tow truck.  The operator of the Toyota, Brian L. Maciel, 52, of Oak Bluffs, was located at the motel in an intoxicated condition and placed under arrest after being interviewed and failing a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.   

Trani was charged with OUI Drugs, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon (Brass Knuckles) and Carrying a Dangerous Weapon (Double-edged knife).  Maciel was charged with OUI Liquor and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. Both Trani and Maciel are scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court on Monday, July 13, 2009.
