Sales tax be damned

How NOT to run a business, or a state government
When revenues fall, only cutting expenses is sane

By Walter Brooks

Governor Deval Patrick signed the 25% increase in our sales tax, and if I was shocked by his action, it's really my own fault for thinking any politician had the moral fiber, the backbone, the raw guts, to stand up to the corruption, cupidity and flim-flam of Beacon Hill's den of knaves.

A one-party state legislature like Zimbabwe, Iran and the former Soviet Republics is an abomination for our state.

My family and I run three different businesses, and we've survived through several recessions by following two simple economic rules:

  1. when revenue is down,
  2. you cut expenses.

We don't "like" to cut expenses, but if anyone's expenses are greater than their income, they go broke. It's that simple. Of course it's painful, but so is it painful for the nearly 10% of Bay Staters who are out of work.

If a business fails, its owners and employees stop paying state taxes and go on unemployment creating added burdens on an already reduced state budget. The 25% increase in expenses for most everything we buy makes the problem worse for everyone except our politicians who can ignore economic rules because we gave them permission..

The "right" thing for our pols to have done was to cut their own pay to demonstrate solidarity with their voters and make state government run on the money it was getting under present laws.

Here's what they did instead.

The Democratic dictatorship on Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill, the legislature and the governor, were faced with the same problems of millions of other U.S. businesses and individuals.

The state's revenue is less than it used to be.

Unlike you and me, however,  Beacon Hill doesn't have to follow your rules for what to do when revenues drop.

They simply raised your sales tax because they COULD.  And they have the power to do so because you gave it to them.

To my Democrat friends, I can only say their position on the sales tax is akin to what Samuel Johnson said about sex: "the expense is damnable, the position is ridiculous, and the pleasure fleeting."

If Governor Patrick was the man we thought he was, he would have vetoed that 25% sales tax increase even if he knew the Beacon Hill dictatorship could and would override him.

If you question the word dictatorship to describe our legislature, perhaps you should read the definition here:

dic⋅ta⋅tor⋅ship - noun
1. a country, government, or the form of government in which absolute power is exercised by a dictator.
2. absolute, imperious, or overbearing power or control.

That correctly describes our one-party legislature where the Democratic majority is overwhelming and there is no effective "loyal opposition" left.  Like Zimbabwe, Iran and the former Soviet Republics.

And YOU elected them.

Contact your state rep today about their vote on the sales tax:

I vist the Merrimack Valley area quite often and have been buying most moderate to expensive taxable items in NH. With the increase in sales tax I will increase my trips into Salem NH. I also know all the back roads to and from NH so I can escape any tax police who may be setting up shop.

Well put Walter.

Have to say, I was a bit surprised by this one.

Personally, I don't know any taxpayer/voter who is in favor of this tax increase.....can't see how that is representing the majority of their constituents.

You hit the nail on the head Walter. I too am surprised at your "right" opinion. In better years "they" continued to spend, spend amd spend. Revenues are down now they want "us" to pay even more when we can afford it less. After the rebound will they lower the tax rate? Yeah right. There is a disconnect between our state leaders and the public. They have lost the common touch. Yes, we let them. Where is the outrage?

Yes, I'm a lifelong social liberal, and hopefully, a fiscal conservative.
But this editorial is more about a one-party government in our state today.

Perhaps you would like to share your opinion on the .75% local option meals tax increase and the local option to increase the rooms tax from 4% to 6%which represents a potential 50% increase.

Taxes aren't always the answer in the long run and I agree with bartenderfromhell I will just travel to where it is cheaper. The poliicians need to take a look at their budgets. Today mangeragers are quick to cut the blue collar workers as a means to lessen costs, thus leaving the workers left behind to do the work of two. But yet the mansgement staff continues with their high pay and expenses. And at times lets face it there are more cheifs than indians. And lets just look at the money they spent for mile markers recently that weren't really needed. We could all go on ,but who will listen.

Our politicians have shown us again and again how irresponsible they are with our money. Actually, they don't even connect their spending with our pockets. Example: "free dental care". No it's not "free". Do they really think it is "free"? It's "taxpayer-funded dental care". Actually, I am amazed at their deadly combination of ignorance and arrogance with a little lack of intelligience sprinkled in.

Walter is right. I am an independent who has mostly voted democrat in the past (sorry!). How I ever voted for some of these people is beyond me - I'm embarrassed. And now I see that we have created a one party monster that needs to be destroyed.

One last comment - I never thought I would ever consider voting for repealing the income tax, but now, I don't think we have a choice. We need to make a strong statement and show our outrage at the contemptible tax and spend policy and corruption of Beacon Hill.

When does a business competitor raise its prices unilaterally with no regard to a competitor right next door who has lower operating costs, lower prices, less restrictions, and owners[leaders] who really care about their customers[taxpayers]---a recipe for financial disaster. no business, entity or institution can sustain itself when its costs go higher and it continuously loses its customers. Wake up Massachusetts.

I am sure there are PLENTY of little percs that line their pockets that the general public is unaware of.

Disgusting.

Christy, if elected...I am hoping you are planning to make the hard choice cuts, rather than spend us into oblivion......I am so sick and tired of everyone's hand being in my pocket spending my hard earned money for me....I can't take it anymore.

WOW!! Walter I’m surprised and I agree with 100%. In the private sector you have to cut expenses to survive. The same rule has to be applied to the Towns. Giving the Towns the right to accept and expand the meals and rooms tax will only help to feed the town machines. It will only be used to give out pay raises. The Town of Yarmouth is considering a Special Town Meeting in August wasting thousands of taxpayers dollars to do what? Raise Taxes? To raise the costs on all those who live here. The restaurants will pass this new increase along to those who live year round never mind the tourists. The taxpayers in each of our towns should go to their respective Town Meetings and Just Say NO on any new taxes. I know I will if Yarmouth does have a taxpayer wasting Town Meeting for this purpose.

To vote for and trust any pol is our 1st cardinal sin..a lesson never learned in Massachusetts..and repeated endlessly!

Our state is overwhelmingly employing friends, relatives, and business hacks to higher paying (than private sector jobs) with lifelong pensions and benefits til death!

..and the constituents be damned.

Whether you be liberal, conservative, greenie, indi, whatever your political persuasion or not, we have been fleeced for far too long.
Unfortunately Walter, the public has short term memory and probably will re-elect the same scoundrels in the next election cycle..as they have always done
Hopefully you will continue to remind them when the next polls open up.

So why do MA voters continue to reelect crooks who tax and spend our money in a bloated and inefficient system? Why do we allow the government to take our money and give it to someone else? Why do we allow government to be more and more intrusive in our lives? Government has gotten too powerful. I am not impressed by charasmatic speeches and promises to "spread the wealth" That should scare you!

To set the record straight, I along with my 16 Republican colleagues in the House and 27 Democrats recently rejected a reckless budget, as it was light on reform and heavy on taxes. The Budget also harms local cities and towns, as well as public safety. Disappointing 110 Democrats and the Governor approved it.
The misguided solution to the fiscal crisis was to increase taxes on sales, meals, telecommunications, alcohol, satellite television, hotel stays, nursing home residents and fees at the Registry. We also break the promise of lottery revenue being dedicated to education and consume another $199 million from the state’s stabilization account. The budget also borrows from the 2011 Federal Stimulus funds to put it into balance. This is very disappointing and sets up another structural budget problem for next year. The local option taxes are exactly that. Each town votes on the option of raising or lowering and local option tax such as the room tax. The amount of the increase is part of the vote. So meals tax in Brewster may be higher than Barnstable.

What a thrill to see an old liberal like Walter Brooks finally see the light!!! Makes a former Republican candidate in the First Barnstable District with 49+% of the vote feel somewhat vindicated. The misguided ideals of the far light are finally grabbing the wallets of many who have defended and voted for them for years!

I have many liberal friends and as I have said, I have voted democrat in the past. But most, if not all, of my liberal friends have stated that this Massachusetts legislature is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with the liberal democrat party and that they too have seen the light. They state that they have learned their lesson for the next election, but I guess that remains to be seen.

To voice of reason---when elected we will terminate 10% of the state's work force= $600million.
No member of my administration will be part of the state pension system--we want public service not self-service.
Tax credits like the Hollywood-film tax credit and the bio-tech $105 million per year will be axed--with the legislatures assistance.
We will move to community based systems in healthcare as quickly as we can.
That's the first Billion in cuts and best practices -- more to come -- but my goal of returning 40% of state revenues to the 351 cities and towns is still job #1.
Get the money where the power in the state should vest.
At least at the local level, you have some control over YOUR money.

I don't understand how anyone can be surprised, angry, feeling betrayed, etc. by the mob on Beacon Hill.

I mean, c'mon, THREE consecutive Speakers under indictment?

Look at the constituency that elects these crooks over and over again: South Boston, the North End, etc.

Certainly, the majority of voters and residents in these areas are decent people, but isn't it a bit naive to assume that the criminal elements who operate their have no influence?
