Cape Cod Community College begins site prep work for turbine

Turbine to be delivered, installed in November

Cape Cod Community College’s contractor, J.K. Scanlan has begun site preparation work for the installation of a 600 kW wind turbine on property near the College’s soccer field and tennis courts off Route 132 in West Barnstable.  Once prepared, grading and road work into the site will follow. Although the turbine is not expected to be delivered and erected until November, this work is being done now to avoid as much impact as possible on College operations once the new semester begins September 9th.

A 600 kW Elecon/Turbowinds T-600-48DS machine with a 48 meter rotor on a 50 meter tower is to be installed this coming November.

The state’s Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) is overseeing the work as it did the construction of the College’s Gold LEED certified Lorusso Applied Technology Building. The project is part of the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust initiative to bring renewable energy to the Commonwealth. MA Renewable Energy Trust is the state’s development agency for renewable energy and the innovation economy.

If it's a 48 meter rotor on a 50 meter tower, does that mean that the blades are only 2 feet off the ground? I guess I don't understand how the measurements of wind turbines work?

Ah, further research shows the rotor to be a 48 meter diameter meaning 24 meters on each side. So it would be 26 meters off the ground, wheww!

It's great seeing so many new wind turbines being installed. I wonder what percentage of the school's power requirements will be supplied by this turbine??
