Is this governor completely tone deaf?

New, interim U.S. Senator for the Commonwealth

By Christy Mihos.

Patrick doesn't understand what a real emergency is -
Law does not support "emergency" declaration.

Adding insult to injury, Governor Patrick has ended this sordid political drama on Beacon Hill through granting high office by declaring an emergency. The emergency in the Commonwealth right now is due to a sinking economy and a state house where ethical standards have plummeted during Deval Patrick's leadership. Someone should tell the governor where the real fire is," said Mihos.

Is this governor so completely tone deaf that he believes voters support the tactics he's used these past few days to change the law regarding the appointment of a new, U.S. senator?"

According to media reports, Governor Patrick has said he will declare an emergency so that he can immediately appoint a new senator today. Mihos said he concurs with the letter sent by the state G.O.P. to State Secretary Bill Galvin, urging the secretary to be cognizant of the fact that state law does not facilitate Patrick declaring an emergency for this purpose.

If the media were to take a careful look at state law and past legal decisions, they will see that declaring an emergency for purposes of this political appointment is simply not legal.

Christy Mihos, Yarmouth.

Christy not only is the governor deaf so is the majority of the legislature. They claim we need 2 senators. We have had 1,in name only, as Ted missed 97% of the votes in his last 12 months. Kerry was gone 14 months while running for President. Unless and until the voters in this state wake up nothing will change. You have my vote I only wish I could vote more than once.

Good Folks...such short memories.

If you look back in the blog archives during the wind debate Deval was running as pro Wind Factory.

You were all enamored and voted for him. Then Obama comes along slinging the same type of crap and you vote for him.

You deserve what you vote for. I have no empathy.

You are absolutely right maverick! ALL you who bought it and now are crying foul are learning hard lessons with more to come. Unless the people wake up and go to the polls and speak out we will have more of the same tired policies and arrogant, crooked and shameful political ploys. Regardless of political affiliation, Christy in 2010 and a Republican in January for Senator. It is the only way to begin to change the way this state operates!!!

Well... Deval'll get away with it, right? We're just expressing outrage right? I miss those recorded phone calls from Ted K telling me to vote for people. Not tone-deaf but rather mellifluous, those...

Cape Cod Republican [Member] writes:
BOSTON - Suffolk County Superior Court Judge Thomas Connolly has scheduled an 8 a.m. Hearing tomorrow to consider the request for injunction filed today by the Massachusetts Republican Party. In its request, the MassGOP states it believes Governor Patrick has overstepped his authority by attaching an emergency preamble to the Senate vacancy law signed today and appointing Paul G. Kirk Jr. As Interim U.S. Senator.

Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jennifer Nassour said: "I thank the court for taking the time tomorrow for what we consider to be an important legal question. From the beginning, the Republican Party of Massachusetts has been focused on ensuring the laws of our Commonwealth are properly followed. While we opposed the change in the election law, once changed, we believe Governor Patrick has an obligation to follow the law as written. By immediately making an appointment, we believe the governor has overstepped his authority."

This is all Teds fault anyway. He should have bowed out in a classy way, not like this, a self centered hypocite.
Once he was diagnosed with brain cancer, something we all knew he was going to die from, he should have submitted his resignation effective immediatley after an election for a new senator. He could have continued his efforts while stumping for the new replacement he would back. After loads of support, the candidate probably would have won, Kennedy could have continued in the shadows as a puppet master and his bill would have continued and even better, his candidate would have that much more experience when the term was up and would run for the new term.

But noooooo.

Self centered Ted, obviously thinking once again he was immortal, decides to ignore the grim reality, continue to decline and NOT represent the sate for the past how many months and then cry out that the state needs to change the law back from what he had it changed to 5 years ago bacuse we need representation! And let this boob of a governor do the appointing? What a sham and a shame.

Well said karent2. Where else in society does a terminally ill, unable-to-work person retain a job? Nowhere.

Bowing out probably never occurred to Teddy because he and his clan long ago came to believe that that Senate seat belonged to them, not to the Commonwealth.

In addition to violating the state constitution, does this change in the law not also violate the federal prohibition banning the enactment of retroactive legislation? Why is this action not being challenged in federal court as well? Or will it be should this challenge fail, which, of course, it will?

About This Blog

oped3An op-ed is a piece of writing, expressing an opinion. The name originated from the tradition of newspapers placing each columns on the page opposite to the editorial page. Thus the term "op-ed" is simply a combination of "opposite" and "editorial." The difference with this one, however, is that you can reply immediately by commenting below.
