Cape and state organizations pen letter to Salazar and Birnbaum on behalf of Cape Wind
Letter to government representatives calls for Cape Wind to move forward now
Representatives from several Cape and state organizations, including environmental groups and labor stakeholders, sent a joint letter to Washington Tuesday extolling the future benefits of the Cape Wind project and asking that the project be allowed to move forward immediately without further delay.
The letter, addressed to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Director of the Mineral Management Service S. Elizabeth Birnbaum, asked specificially that the pending National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 process (see Section 9, page 11 of the case study PDF here) for the project be put to an end quickly with a decision favoring Cape Wind and the development of their 130 turbine wind project on Nantucket Sound.
Those signing the letter maintain that the waters of Nantucket Sound are not a "Traditional Cultural Property" and therefore do not fall under the jurisdiction of the NHPA.
The New York Times recently featured a story about the latest attempt to stall the wind project by calling on the NHPA here.
Read the letter in its entirety below:
October 13, 2009
The Honorable Ken Salazar
Secretary, U.S. Department of the Interior
1849 C Street, N.W.

S. Elizabeth Birnbaum, Director
Minerals Management Service

Re: Cape Wind Offshore Wind Energy Project
Dear Secretary Salazar and Director Birnbaum:
The undersigned environmental, clean energy and labor stakeholders applaud your
support for responsible renewable energy development, and join you in recognizing the considerable – but as yet untapped – potential of clean energy projects in the ocean waters of the United States.
We believe it is essential that the United States move forward now to translate these
critical objectives into real action. When you assumed your current offices, you inherited a legacy of delay that put this nation’s offshore renewable energy program years behind the successful efforts of many other nations. The most obvious, visible and reasonable way to break past this inertia is to move forward expeditiously with final approval and leasing of the pioneering 130-turbine Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound off the coast of Massachusetts.
Through some eight years of rigorous environmental and permitting review, the Cape
Wind project has demonstrated that its environmental benefits are expected to
significantly outweigh its impacts. The project holds tremendous promise for powering up to three-quarters of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket with approximately 450 Megawatts of emissions-free electricity, while spurring an entire sector of much needed clean energy development. In addition, as the nation and the world look to the Administration for leadership in addressing climate change, there is no question that the Cape Wind project carries tremendous symbolic importance.
We therefore respectfully urge you to bring to a close the pending National Historic
Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 process for the Cape Wind project, and enter a
favorable Record of Decision without further delay. Contrary to the assertions of a
handful of project opponents, the approximately 560 square miles of unenclosed ocean water known as Nantucket Sound are not appropriate for listing on the National Register as a “Traditional Cultural Property” under the NHPA. Moreover, such a drastic departure from longstanding practice and precedent would have a far-reaching chilling effect on responsible offshore renewable energy development in federal and state waters, just as MMS endeavors to unleash the OCS Alternative Energy program and Massachusetts strives to finalize and implement its first-in-the-nation Ocean Management Plan.
Cape Wind will concretely advance the Administration’s objectives in addressing the
challenge of global warming while promoting energy security and economic
development. Following an extremely lengthy and rigorous review, approval of the Cape Wind project now will send a critical message to the renewable energy development community and will help lay the strongest possible foundation for offshore wind energy development in the United States.
Respectfully submitted,

Were the "Heavy Hitters" here with the native Americans?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox
If this was a serious issue, why did it take 8 years for it to come up?
I wonder how Deval will regard the Wamps at casino time now.
Obviously self interest is what we see here, with no long term consideration to the environment.
I'm an environmentalist and I see no benefit to this wind farm.
The Earth warming subject has run it's course, thinking people realise it's NOT caused by man.
Please go to the Heartland Institute.org
The "New Yuppies". It is OK to lie to accomplish any objective. The "Old Yuppies". It is OK to lie to further my career.
The list of "heavy hitters" is made up of lobbyists and labor unions. Go figure.
I am certain they all believe in deriving our energy from clean sources.
Maverick, you have been so tragically wrong so often, I'm not sure why you think throwing your thoughts out there actually helps the anti-wind cause.
Aren't the native Americans concerned their 'unobstructed view' is filled with particulates & poisons, the water filled with toxins, the living balance disrupted by not allowing the replacement of oil & coal burning energy by clean wind technology.
I believe in the spiritual concepts of being a great steward of the earth. I believe in the patriotic duty of Americans to free themselves from foreign petrol-dictatorships. I believe Cape Cod should be as independent as possible, all of which is achieved by a windfarm.
I am referring to the real world, not the cartoon-Rush Limbaugh world that Maverick lives in.
Long live a clean energy future, death to the lies told about Wind power. (I wish good health to Wind foes, that is why I support a wind farm.)

Carl, you are a bullshit artist. "death to the lies". I am looking for a place to puke.
You need to read what Carl actually wrote. He stated that he knows six of those who signed and only one of those six is union.
I love Cape Cod. It is the pain in the ass charter captains I have a problem with.
away...would you like me to list the lobbyists on the list. Might a pain in the ass suggest a little truth?
Ready to puke again. You know where I live if you need relief from your problem. If not I will give you detailed directions.
I saw how many that signed the list were union. I also saw that Carl wrote he only knew six on the list (a lot more that six signed). I'm sorry you have problems with English Comprehension.
Just make sure you are not lying on your stomach when you puke...
The last thing you want is a visit from me. Be kind of hard now seeing I am in Denver enjoying the Rocky Mountain High. But I will be back in a couple of weeks.
I love Cape Cod. It is the pain in the ass charter captains I have a problem with.
His comment..."I know 6 of those people who signed, I do not believe any of them are lobbyists, 1 of them is in a Union."
Do I have to list the list again for you?
Your comment "The last thing you want is a visit from me". I look forward to it.
It is easy to see you are having a problem with comprehension. I see your list. As a matter of fact here is your list:

The funny thing is I called you on this and now you move on to lobbiest. Which is it Mav?
One last thing...be careful what you wish for.
I love Cape Cod. It is the pain in the ass charter captains I have a problem with.
If vermin like you crawl in my space please wear body armor.
Back to the debate. He said one labor union when there were five. And I suggested listing lobbyists of which Carl said there are none when in fact there are five.
You my friend suck a big one. look forward to meeting you. Haven't met a fraud in weeks.
The man said ONE of the SIX HE KNOWS is union.
Jeebus.
Anyone wanna defend the Wamps claim that their "oral history" indicates that Horseshoe Shoals was once dry land (presumably since the end of the Ice Age)?
"Stellwagen Bank was once dry land where mastodon and mammoth roamed"
http://stellwagen.noaa.gov/about/origins.html
In our region, mastodon bones have been unearthed in peat deposits of the Harlem River and 22 feet below ground at Broadway and Dyckman Street in upper Manhattan; mastodon and mammoth teeth have been trawled by fishermen from undersea banks off the Atlantic coast, indicating these creatures roamed an outwash plain of mixed tundra (favored by mammoths) and black spruce swamps(browsed by mastodons)."

Carl, you are a bullshit artist. "death to the lies". I am looking for a place to puke.
Carl has not responded since. You went from union to lobbyist when I questioned you. You are a piece of shit. Are you going to ask what the definition of the word is is for an encore?
You are a true piece of shit.
You want to bet and win you have better odds at Foxwoods. I have yet to lose to boilermakers, ironworkers, longshoremen, or millwrights. What is a charter captain going to bring to the table? If Mav is stupid enough to really want a visit he will get one.
Carl responded with..."Maverick, you have been so tragically wrong so often". Yet doesn't give an example of when I was wrong. And a history of this site regarding Cape Wind will prove I was right.
Carl's statement regarding unions and lobbyists was deception to suggest there were less than those that signed the letter. I just reiterated who did sign. A bunch of lobbyists and union leaders.
One of the original premises by Cape Wind was the illusion that wind is free so your power bills will be reduced. That is a lie. The ratepayers on Cape Cod will have their bills increased if this boondoggle is built.
When confronted with the truth about rates Carl disappeared.
Call we whatever. Could care less. But I would appreciate the truth. If Carl says I am wrong please give an example.
I suggest you don't think too much...I would hate to see you hurt your head.
Mav,
All I pointed out was what Carl wrote and how you responded. It seems that you have been arguing with that idiot Lattimer too much (I would like to wring his neck personally) as when I pointed out he stated only one he knew was union you suddenly changed your agrument to lobbyist.
I will agree that Cape Wind will not drop rates. I strongly disagree that it will increase rates. If you are so concerned you wouldn't have to buy electricity generated by them. If you want lower rates look around, they are out there. Anyone paying the Cape Light Compact is, to be blunt, stupid.
I am not against wind power. I am against the site chosen by Cape Wind. And have been very disappointed with answers to my concerns. When you ask an honest question on this site you don't get an honest answer, you get attacked.
I can't drink too much out here in Denver. I am running a 20 million dollar shut down of a combined cycle power plant. I work 13 hours a day, 7 days a week until the job is done (in this case for 28 days scheduled). When you bill your customer $200/hr for your time they expect you to be sober and not hung over when you show up to work. To do otherwise is very unprofessional. Now what I do when I am at home on the Cape is my business. What is your excuse? Stay off the sauce my man.
http://www.newyorknature.net/IceAge.html
Wow, kool-aid. You are soooo clever. Did you come up with that little ditty yourself or did you channel Jim Jones? I guess you don't have the qualifications I am looking for...pity. In this current economy people are hurting, yet nobody wants to come out in the field and work in the plants. Hell the union millwrights out here all pull in over 100k a year and there isn't enough of them. You can now go back to drinking your urine like the freak you are.
Preserving marine life offsets CO2 emissions -- report (10/14/2009)
Preventing the destruction of marine life, which capture more than half of the world's CO2 emissions, could help offset current fossil fuel emissions by 3 percent to 7 percent, a United Nations report said today.
The "Blue Carbon" report found that life in the seas and estuaries, such as plankton and mangrove forests, captures and stores up to 1,650 million metric tons of CO2 every year, the equivalent of almost half the world's transportation emissions, it said.
"We already know that marine ecosystems are multitrillion dollar assets linked to sectors such as tourism, coastal defense, fisheries and water purification services," said Achim Steiner, head of the U.N. Environment Programme.
"Now it is emerging that they are natural allies against climate change," he said.
The report estimates that up to 7 percent of these "blue carbon" stores are lost every year due to pollution and coastal development."
She said when she got there, people told her "Come for vacation, leave on probation!"
But I lived there for 7 years....the most beautiful place on earth.
Saw U-2 at red rocks when they were just starting out.
What a magical experience. No microphones necessary.
And whole towns built into mountains....Gorgeous!
We lived on a horse farm in Aurora. Once saw the two most lovely men in my life....black shiny hair down to their azzes.
Oh boy.....memory lane. Sorry!
Denver is alright, no better or worse than any other place in the country I've been. The altitude takes some getting used to though. I only have to deal with it for another couple of weeks then I get to go back to the Cape for ten days then off to the ugliest city in the country...Houston. At least the weather down there is good this time of year.

Why don't they list the reasons it doesn't qualify? Does CCToday know the reasons and if so please enlighten us.
PS...why is everyone off-topic other than Ned? He reports having dinner with Alice Brock and doesn't get a warning. Like we care!
If this area gets the protection you talk of wouldn't it be necessary to stop all fishing in the area also?
They could put the wind factory further offshore but refuse because they wouldn't make as much money. Forget the Native Americans for a second. The site is in the middle of a major migratory flyway which by Federal Law is illegal. Sad, very sad.
