Nobel economist's work hailed by catch share foes

The Nobel Prize in economics bestowed upon Elinor Ostrom this week largely honors her work showing that commonly owned resources can be preserved and managed by stakeholders as well as or better than by governments or through privatization.

North Beach Camp Watch

Both the Cape Cod Chronicle and the Cape Cod Times, via the Boston Herald, are reporting that the final North Beach Camp still standing took a beating on Friday and may succumb to the angry ocean as stormy weathered is predicted to continue this weekend.  The final camp, owned by William Hammatt, and shown in this photo by Walter Brooks, outlasted the neighboring Kelley camp that was demolished this past July.

And many within the fishing community are noting her position as a strong statement against the "catch-share" management format being pushed for New England and other fisheries.

With the administration of President Obama, himself a Nobel Peace Prize-winner, embarked on a zealous effort to convert as many of the nation's fisheries into systems of private ownership — whether called "catch shares," or individual transferable quotas (ITQs) — and fishing communities complaining of central state bureaucratic tyranny, Ostrom's shift from academe into the spotlight has thrust her ideas straight into a fierce debate. ...

... "Ms. Ostrom is a 'guiding light' for our fishing industry," Mary Beth de Poutiloff of Provincetown wrote in an e-mail to industry colleagues, noting fishermen's mass protest being planned for NOAA's regional offices in Gloucester in two weeks. ... Gloucester Times.

Cape Cod Soldier Welcomed Home By Family, Friends

"I'm just very, very thankful that this day is actually happening. I'm thankful that he's coming home alive, in one piece. There are just no words to explain how I'm feeling right now."

Subdivison developer promises improvements

Michael Spence has told the Bourne Planning Board he is cash-strapped but said he would try to raise some capital and fix severe erosion this fall in the problem-plagued Canal View Estates subdivision off Sandwich Road built by his late father.

The planning board is checking with Town Counsel Robert Troy to see if they can take an unsold lot in the Sagamore village subdivision as a form of additional surety in case Spence does not take corrective action.

The town already holds a performance bond, but that $30,000 will not cover the cost of repairing failed catch basins and repaving Jillian Drive once erosion above it is fixed. ... Bourne Courier.

Reclaiming history: Original Taylor-Bray farmhouse is revealed

After being closed for much of the past decade, the eight-room farmhouse on the Taylor-Bray Farm in Yarmouth Port is being stripped down to reveal its original construction.

Fiona & Scotty should be pleased once the work at Taylor-Bray is completed.

“We’re removing all of the so-called modern updates in the building to get it back to its early structure,” says Dick Boardman, a Taylor-Bray Farm Preservation Association member.

For the past two weeks, Boardman has been doing much of the interior demolition to reveal the condition of the old farmhouse to town officials, who hope to put the restoration of the building out to bid this winter.

The goal of exposing the hidden structural conditions, such as water damage or rotting wood, is to provide the town with a better understanding of the scope and costs of the rehabilitation work that will be needed to restore the building. ... Yarmouth Register.

Clouds in her coffee: Carly Simon battles with Starbucks

BROKEN trust, men misbehaving, women trying to recover – these sound like themes from a Carly Simon song.

But they could be recording the legendary American singer's view of what happened to what was to have been her final album. Simon, the husky-voiced musician who topped the charts with You're So Vain in the 1970s, is taking legal action against her record label, claiming that terrible sales were a result of Starbucks' mismanagement. ...

...Her financial situation worsened: she owed money on her Martha's Vineyard house, had put her New York apartment on the market without success and had lost money in the stock market. She did not receive the whole $575,000 advance, she said, and the usual lift in back catalogue sales that comes with a release did not happen, nor did increased royalties from radio play. ...
