Bushitis, An Unproductive Mindset

Since the election of 2000, and especially since the beginning of the Afghanistan/Iraq wars, President Bush was -- and is -- blamed by some for all the problems the nation has faced.  This attitude, obviously incorrect on its face, poisons political debate.  It continues today, as unproductive as ever, and will be examined below under two headings.

Iraq

Bush is a liar.  This charge dates back to the beginning of the war in Iraq.  No weapons of mass destruction were found; Bush and prominent members of the Democratic Party said, before the war, that Iraq had them.

This gulf between apparent reality and claim was pounced upon by Bush's political opponents as a chance to make meaningful points -- they called him a liar.  The insult gained acceptance among the most outspoken liberals.  He was branded.

The case that this charge is entirely political in nature is easy to make:

  • Bill Clinton and his administration believed that Saddam Hussein had to be taken down for national security reasons.  In 1997, U.S. military forces were inoculated against anthrax as a preparatory move to possible war with Iraq -- chemical and biological weapons in Iraq was taken as a given.
  • In 1998, Secretary Albright said: "Saddam Hussein, armed with chemical and biological weapons, is a threat to the international community."
  • Clinton confirmed Albright's concerns: "Iraq continues to conceal chemical and biological weapons and has the missiles to deliver them. ... And some day, some way, I guarantee you he'll use his arsenal."
  • By this time, nuclear bombs made by Hussein were also considered to be a near term danger.
  • In August 1998, Clinton signed a law (passed unanimously in the Senate and by 407-6 in the House) that authorized the president to "take appropriate action ... to bring Iraq into compliance with its international obligations."  By the time Bush took office, the situation was worse, not better.
  • This was the attitude in place when Bush became president; his own security people confirmed it; he believed in it; the United Nations and the intelligence systems of all prominent nations agreed that Saddam had chemical and biological weapons -- he was close to acquiring the ability to produce nuclear weapons -- he had the will and capacity to smuggle weapons to all parts of the world, including the United States.
  • Bush acted based upon the best information available.
  • The failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq proves nothing.  Six months prior to the invasion of Iraq, Saddam knew the U.S. was preparing for war.  He had ample time to ship material to safe locations in, say, Syria.  Israel claims he did so.  Maybe he had them; maybe he didn't.  But everybody thought he did.
  • Lying is the willful misrepresentation of facts.  Bush's reports to the Congress and to the people were accurate representations of the truth as he (and many others) knew it.  To call him a liar is blatantly incorrect, unfair and political.
  • The final truth of this is the way Clinton, the Congress and Secretary Colin Powell have been handled by the same people who damn Bush.  Clinton's correct analysis of the situation and the approval of it by Democrats in Congress are forgotten, because they embarrassingly contradict the charge made against Bush.  Secretary Powell announced to the world, in a United Nations appearance, that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but he is never called a liar.
  • These people who shared the same "truth" as Bush and who said the same words, are not called liars.  That insult is reserved for the Republicans some seek to demonize -- Bush and Cheney.

Should Iraq have been invaded? If so, at that time, or a later time?  These are legitimate questions worthy of debate.  But sensible discussion is stopped in its tracks by the smug, know-it-all and simplistic statement, "Bush is a liar." To which there is only one sensible response: "Grow up!"

The recession

Bush did it!

This is the message from the Obama administration; it is making the same claims today.

Change?

Certainly, this approach to the economic problem is a marked change from how Bush handled the economic crisis of 2001.

He walked into a recession, and didn't blame Clinton -- he went to work; a few months later, Enron and other corporate scandals broke out and added to the economic problem.  He didn't blame Clinton -- he went to work.  Then came 9-11, an attack from a network of terrorists that grew to maturity under Clinton.  Bush didn't blame his predecessor -- he went to work.

Truth is that presidents seldom cause recessions during their own administrations, but their policies can stimulate them in years ahead.  The United States has been heading for economic problems since the 1960s at which time Washington's politicians decided that spending could exceed revenue, as they wished.  We are paying for that attitude today.

The establishment of Fannie Mae in 1968 and Freddie Mac in 1970 as government-sponsored enterprises (GSE), and the passage in 1977 of the Community Reinvestment Act are useful places to begin when looking for causes of the 2009 recession, which was led by a crash in the housing market and the subsequent financial pressures on banks, which was followed by a slowdown in the general economy.

The civil rights movement resulted in a lot that was good and some that was bad.  One of the bad things was the tendency to convert dreams into rights.  In this case, homes are the issue.  The dream of owning one's own home was converted by the Utopians into a right to own one's own house.

Rights never stand alone.  They are followed by obligations.  If Susie has a right to a house, anything that erases or weakens it must be removed.

What was the most prominent thing in Susie's way? -- bank lending practices.  They had to be evil, because they interfered with Susie's rights.

In those days banks seldom opened branches in neighborhoods that had a high crime rate; they didn't lend money to people who couldn't demonstrate the ability and character to repay.  The two "Cs" were the foundation of lending policy: Capacity and Character.

Unfair, said the government; discrimination, said the government.

And they had statistics to prove that the poor had a harder time getting loans than the non-poor.  Wow!  This had to change.  And the federal government, of course, had to do the changing.

You own a bank and won't put a branch bank on Murder Avenue?  You're a racist and government will find a way to brand you and punish you.  You insist on a down payment with the mortgage?  You're a racist.  You require detailed information about a potential borrower's income and assets.  You're a racist.  You worry about ability to repay?  No excuse -- sell the mortgage to one of the GSE and let them worry.

A note about GSE: They are supposed to be private operations but the wink-wink attitude in the investment business is that the government won't let them fail -- they are federal operations in a sheep's clothing.  For that reason investment instruments made up of sub-par mortgages became popular with experienced investment people.

In such a climate is it any wonder that the sale of houses boomed, and the supply of sub-par mortgages crept into the portfolios of banks and others.

Perhaps to draw attention away from the real causes of the recession much is made of predatory bankers, and borrowers so thick-headed that they were hoodwinked into buying champagne houses with beer pocketbooks.  Some of this happened.  But its impact was miniscule compared to the power of the federal steamroller that forced unwise lending practices into a naturally conservative industry.[a]

Until?

The bubble burst.  The price of housing fell, in many cases below the size of the mortgage.  Borrowers walked away from the property; foreclosures multiplied with rabbit-like speed.

Bush did it?  Balderdash!  So did your Aunt Minnie.

Bush had his problems, with conservatives as well as liberals.  But it's time to put him to bed and face the problems at hand -- look for solutions instead of villains.

One thing Obama can learn from Bush -- stop talking, grow up and go to work.

[a] Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are still in business doing the same old thing; there is no movement to outlaw or modify the CRA.  Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, major protectors of the current system, are still in high positions of power.  The Obama administration is trying to refuel the housing market with the tools that destroyed it.

Here’s the first half of Bush’s case for war:

“Iraq has WMD”

What Bush left unsaid, but implied, is the second half of the sentence:

“… and they justify going to war”.

Every intelligence agency in the world believed that Saddam had WMD so there’s no debate about the 1st half. The second half is a completely different story. The question is: “If Saddam had WMD, would they have been a threat that justified war?”. The answer is a resounding “NO”.

Saddam used chemical weapons twice: Against Iran and against the Kurds, both in the 80s. He had not used chemical weapons in over a decade (including Iraq War I) and he had not threatened to use them. So, there was no reason to expect Saddam to use WMD against us. That is, if Saddam had possessed WMD they would not have been a significant threat to the US and its allies.

War is always a very serious matter. The lives lost and the hundreds of billions spent show that to have been the case in Iraq. Saddam’s WMD, even if they had existed, didn’t come close to justifying war. Bush just used them to scare us all into his war of choice.

The premise for all modern war is cash.
1. strategic positioning against potential threats percieved.
Including commerce,resources, investments,banking,etc.
2.securing vital strategic natural resources(oil).and the free flow of such without interruption.
3. Nation rebuilding.as the Roman empire did.
very lucrative for bankers and contractors who always support and recieve the spoils of war.
4.New opps for expanded banking, commerce, and industry.
5.And most important, the military industrial complex, which employs millions throughout the world.
If any one studies modern history in depth, you'd realize that most of Nazi Germany and its war industry, was funded and owned by international corps based in the US.
After allied bombing,we paid millions in reparations to American companies whose factories were destroyed by our military..hmm.
Fast forward..Saddam was financed and supplied with weapons against our then threat of Iran, until he posed a threat to the Saudis, then all bets were off and we had to dispose of him for our interest(oil)with the Saudis.
Do the research.

well not anymore..
Bush, and his heir apparent, and all predecessors, save for JFK and Eisenhower, were, and are, players with banking, nation rebuilders, multinationalists, globalists and the new world order, basically securing,(and setting the agenda through legislation and pre-emptive wars),a global economy and eventual oneworld government.
It is unfortunate that most buy into the right/left,lib/conservative, gop/dnc crap which is all devised for one purpose..division amongst the people.
The current administration is the forefront for the agenda, skillfully planned by the prior administrations, and they all benefit while we face severe economic travesties,(All planned by Both parties)and loss of economic, personal, and so called constitutional rights.. AND soon to be dissolved entirely once, and if,the Copenhagen treaty is signed and passed by congress.
There will no longer be a left/right, conservative/liberal America...

George W. Bush, retreating to familiar ground, has blamed the Clinton administration for North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. But the official who brokered the Clinton-era deal with North Korea called the idea “ludicrous".
"As Juan Williams noted, the Bush administration like to blame President Clinton for 9/11:WILLIAMS: When they were the crisis of 9/11, what’d they do? They pointed at Bill Clinton and said, “why didn’t he do more about catching Bin Laden when he had the chance?
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice “claimed that Clinton did not leave them a comprehensive strategy to fight al Qaeda,” ABC reported. But the 9/11 Commission report “described Rice receiving a ‘comprehensive paper in January 2001 called ‘Strategy for Eliminating the Threat from the Networks of al Qaeda.’
”It wasn’t just terrorism; the Bush administration loved to blame the Clinton administration for the 2001 recession. Bush did so up until his last days in office:“When I took office, our economy was beginning a recession.” — Bush, 8/7/02

Do you recall a senator being asked on national networks about a check that was cashed in the amount of $100k to someone in Pakistan, following the attacks of 911? What is Pakistan's allegiance to Iran? It appears that gaining control of the center of the pie, Iraq is their major plan for two main reasons: continue a strategic military base, while seizing oil fields. Iraq has the most oil of all the middle eastern nations, right? And the Saudis have been after it for decades with the help of Bush I and Bush II, while maintaining Israel as their primary allie. I'm still wondering if the Saudis could have had a major role in 911 due to the big double cross?

Peter,

Have you seen the "Strategy for Eliminating the Threat from the Networks of al Qaeda" left by Clinton? That is, how do you know it wasn't worth the paper it was written on?

It's easy to criticize Clinton for not doing more to get al Qaeda and Osama. But, of course, that criticism comes with the benefit of hindsight (knowledge of 9/11). Nobody was calling for a war on al Qaeda or the equivalent before 9/11: Nobody (including all the experts).

And even if Clinton had desperately wanted to get Bin Laden, he had a nettlesome little thing called Democracy to worry about. Prior to 9/11 Clinton didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of convincing the American people to invade Afghanistan to get al Qaeda. Clinton's hands were tied.

Just as Bush's hands were tied on Iraq until Bin Laden gave him a gift from heaven on 9/11: After that, Bush had no problem selling that unjust war.

The author of this blog is obviously one of those devout Obama haters that magnifies everything minutely negative about Obama. Reminds me of what Rush does for 4 hours each day.

I think that we can forgive a president who has inherited more problems from his predecessor than any president since FDR for mentioning that once in awhile.

Cru and Esther,

If you want an example of how Bush had NO understanding of going to war in the Middle East, consider this:

Bush and company actually thought that, after invading in March, they would exit in large part in September. Remember Jake Garner, the 1st US Administrator (before Bremer)? Bush didn't bother putting a diplomat in there at first because he thought the job would be over in a couple of months.

What incredible ignorance! Wouldn't it have been nice if Bush had picked up a history book in his years before becoming president?

His father knew better: With Baghdad laying at his feet in 1990 he said "N0: If I take Baghdad, I'll own it. That's a bridge waaaaay too far".

Sadly, not his ignorant son.

Anyone criticizing Obama for taking his time on the Afghanistan decision should take a lesson from how rapid and shallow decision making worked out for us in Iraq.

bitter,

What many fail to realize, is that these clips(FOX network, btw, pro-Rush, pro-Coulter, anti-democratic, pro-neocon) and radio shows (liberals included) are making money. Rush is an "entertainer", as Howie Carr (I use to be a fan, not anymore) and the only reason I listened to Howie was because he was into the local politics I knew about. On some issues I agreed with him, but not many. I was an occasional caller who would argue with him, and you know what, he would listen and agree. When he condemned the democrats, I'd call to say that not all were bad and that he should knock off the Slummerville line. It's all entertainment, bitter, mostly-- sometimes listeners will take it too far. I do believe that some radio talk show hosts preach their own gospel. I don't think they understand the damage they are doing to people who really believe their crap. On public schools, w/ACoulter: She is partly correct, we do have problems in our public schools, but PRIVATE ALSO, if not more, because they get ignored. Same issues; pre-teen sex, drugs, eating disorders, over achievers, etc.

bitter says: "Remind me to give you my new salute next time you crow on endlessly about Beckles the Baby."

Once again bitter, I know it's difficult for you and the other one to be anywhere close to accurate, but if you could point out where I ever "crowed" about "beckles" I'd love to see it. Still waiting for the other half of your comedy show to show where I ever called her a "worthless" employee or "Limbaugh is a frequent guest on Fox".

Is it so difficult to write "anything" truthful?

Great Rahm Emmanuel!!
And it's good to laugh at it all...there was one Democratic primary way back, when Gore and Gephart, etc were running--Saturday Night Live did a skit on them that was laugh til you cry funny (same with that x-rated Stern one about Rush being gay!) Anyway, but it's not funny when you spawn comment like this:
"You Libturds have nothing but insults. Filthy welfare recipient, low class idiots. All of you liberals can never discuss real issues, just insults.
Al Liberals and Moderate Conservatives should leave the Country or die."--And they're not kidding!
And I think they do know the damage they are doing. I think that is the whole point of their being. To destroy any opposition. In fact, did you see Kucinich this morning on C-Span? Well-worth watching if you can get it....anyway, Gingrich was on too, and he said,"I have no doubt that we will keep this system in place for centuries to come."---well, no thank you! we don't want your system!
