Why some drivers can avoid speeding citations

State Trooper Tom Hester has connections in  high places
His brokerage associates work for DA O'Keefe, another Boston Court links as well

By Walter Brooks

The Cape Cod Times is waging a nearly half year long battle to get a straight answer from the Massachusetts State Police about a complaint filed that long ago about Trooper Tom Hester speeding by the newspaper.

A simple read through of the connections Mr. Hester has with the Cape and Islands District Attorney's office at the bottom should explain to anyone why the trooper has avoided the fate any other citizen would have met and was not prosecuted.

As the article in the Cape Cod Times states, "Five months, two weeks and five days. That's how long it has been since we first filed a complaint with the Massachusetts state police about a trooper speeding on Route 6 in West Barnstable.

"To recap, the Times filed the complaint shortly after a state official asserted that troopers must obey all traffic laws if they are not responding to an emergency..."

Read the details in Mr. Hester's website below, especially the areas in bold type at the bottom, and the "sluggisheness of the State's bureaucracy is easily understood.

One only hopes our daily newspaper is assiduous in pursuing other answers from Mr.'Keefe, like;

  • Why is the admitting to having had "a couple beers" and empty beers cans in another trooper's car after an accident cause for a breathalyzer test?
  • Why did it take his office three weeks to report and investigate a suspicious death at the Cape Cod Hospital?

According to the death notice, the victim died last Thursday, Oct 29th. The DA (according to the CC Times) is investigating... do you know when they started the investigation?

This summer as I was driving from Brewster to Chatham on route 137 over route 6, the traffic was summer heavy. The ramp off route 6 was packed and back several cars was a white small SUV with police in blue on the side As I drove past the end of the ramp the officer but on his light rack, every one of course made way for him. As I crested over the hill he came flying up behind me shut off his lights and lazily followed me to the light a route 137. There was no emergency he just did not want like everyone else. The plate number was 870 K. this type of behavior like the speeding is why people use the “P “word

A year ago some maniac passed me going around 100 MPH in the breakdown lane between exit 6 and 7. I hadn't recovered from that yet when along comes a State trooper ALSO doing about 100 MPH in the breakdown lane with no lights or sireen going.

I was absolutely WILD and called the Yarmouth State Police Barracks to complain.

They completely blew me off. Since I was on my way to a work appointment I didn't pursue the matter which is completely out of character for me!

I regretted not filing a formal complaint but will do so next time this happens as I'm sure there will be a next time...

What's wrong, Walter? It must be nice to have a soapbox to grind your personal axes upon. I've been around the court system for years (not in the DA's office) and Hester is a good guy and a better cop. He's put a lot of people away that you and everyone else here should be really happy are off the street. But, Walter, do please continue and have your fun at someone else's expense. 3531,

I have a sneaking suspicion we may be acquainted from another site.

What you say to our distinguished editor is most unbecoming as an officer of the law.

"He's put a lot of people away that you and everyone else here should be really happy are off the street".

ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT?

His name was mentioned sometime ago at the highly publicized trial, was it not? I vaguely recall the defense attorney mentioning his name with someone who many believe should be LOCKED UP. Care to comment?

No disrespect intended. We know the good ole' boys in blue do a fine job--well that is at least some do, but what about those who don't?

You shouldn't pick on Walter...he just had a birthday...(btw...Happy Belated Birthday, Walter!)

I've held off commenting on this blog for obvious reasons...you see I've ruffled some rogue feathers with my outspoken comments...some I feel justified, some maybe a bit harsh. Not until I spoke with Detective Mazzone, formerly of Wellfleet PD, did I fully comprehend the difficulties of the job. Maybe our standards are too high?

My favorite thing mass state police do is when they come up behind you and tail gate you until you move over and let them pass. I've had this happen on not only highways, but on regular roads. If any other driver did this I'd tap my breaks to get them to back off but you know if you do that to one of the thugs they'll pull you over.

Why is stuff like this OK in Mass? There's been several very public instances of troopers creating situations where regular law abiding citizens are harassed by a trooper until the go over the edge and lash out at a trooper or the trooper outright violates someones rights (remember the girl that was strip searched on the side of the highway?).

Just wait - one of these psychos will end up killing someone and that's what it will take before the mass state police is finally overhauled - from top to bottom - from how overpaid they are, to how the deal with the public, and through to their training practices.

Sad that it'll have to come about that way.

Now, beofre you run off on another tangential flight of fancy, I will instead mark you as the guy who has so much time on his hands he comments here (as was the case between 10/31 and 11/01) somtehing like twenty-five times in 48 hours. Didn't count exactly, but you really need to find a positive outlet for all of your energy. Something that does not involved hiding behind a cowardly pseudonym and taking cheap shots at named individuals.

Heck, if I didn't know any better, I would think you might be a defense attorney who has issues with the DA's Office and the state cops. But that would be me making unfair conjectures.

I have, even in my "long in tooth" years, enough positive matters to keep me busy so I will be signing off now and will abandon this topic. Please do have a nice day.

I am not a defense attorney, nor do I have "problems with police or DA's office". I just happen to be a woman who lived and worked on the island during the horrific Worthington murder. Listened to an old boss state, "the bitch deserved what she got because she was nothing but trouble". That was long before the black trash man was sent away for life without parole. There are many who feel the system of justice didn't really do a great job with that case and also believe there was much more to the story. Some who spoke out were forced off the island, others just gave up and walked away. An estimated cost for the investigation and trial was over $1 million dollars of taxpayer funding. Some of us would like to know that money was well spent. So far, we are not convinced. Freedom of Speech is a wonderful thing. If not for blogs, we would still believe in fairy tales.

Have a nice day.

So, Crusader has revealed the axe she has to grind. The Worthington murder. Didn't the state trooper help in the investigation? Didn't the bad guy go away for life? Hip-hip-hooray for the troopers and the state police in that one. Take a murderer preying upon a poor woman at home alone, and put him away. Good job I say.

I say again, your opinion matters not to me and I respond only to try and keep anyone from reading your bleatings without retort.
Now, I have to get ready and go to work tonight. One might think you need to find some other means of keeping your hands and mind busy, as it appears that you have nothing to do all day than come on here and spin your fantastic, yet anonymous yarns about the good people of our community.
When you anonymously come on here and defame and defile the reputations of NAMED people within our community, it is not an exercise of the rights granted to us in the first ammendment. Rather, I feel it is a preposterously shameful and cowardly chance to libel respected persons you dislike.

Well, if it was a nurse, security guard, a dietary aide, the floor sweeper....WHOEVER...

They must show just cause for handling this man the way they did, causing him to be on a respirator for 3 WEEKS, which led to his untimely death.

I was not there....NEITHER WERE YOU. If the paper bothered to print accurate details instead of their continual diluting the FACTS, maybe we could understand what really happened.

The BOSTON GLOBE and other local reporting seemed to get the FACTS RIGHT THE FIRST TIME about the MGH stabbing/shooting.

Is there some kind of deformed handicap the CCTIMES has, that they cannot get accurate reporting of events which occurs down there, or is it some other reason?

I was right in my previous assessment of the girlfriend suing the town of Yarmouth over the shooting of Brazilian driver by office Van Ness. I bet she is successful. This is why they have policies and procedures in place, to avoid fatalities and lawsuits. Never a perfect world, but you can sure minimize damages.

I'd still like to know who took this guy's keys off his dead body, went to his apt. and looted his safe.

Now Yarmouth may be adapting Boston's policies when it comes to speeding vehicles and when an officer should draw his gun-lots needs changing there, lots.
