District attorney says hospital death investigation could be lengthy

"We were involved, along with the Barnstable Police Department, in the incident even before the death."
                    - D.A. O'Keefe.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe is expecting the investigation of David Ryan's death at Cape Cod Hospital to take a couple of months. Ryan, 35, of Mashpee died after an altercation with a Cape Cod Hospital employee earlier in October.

"We were involved, along with the Barnstable Police Department, in the incident even before the death," said O'Keefe.

Ryan died at Cape Cod Hospital Thursday, Oct. 29... As a result of the measures taken by the unidentified hospital employee, Ryan was placed on life support for three weeks... The Register.

State presses wind projects
Bill aims to ease gridlock around appeals process

With more than a third of the major wind-energy projects in Massachusetts stalled by lawsuits or permit appeals, the Patrick administration has proposed a landmark bill that would streamline the state's appeals process and make it possible to win approval of such projects much more quickly.

Massachusetts now generates less than 1 percent of the nation's wind energy, about 9 megawatts, enough to power only about 2,700 homes. Without a change in the permitting process, administration officials say, the state will not meet Governor Deval Patrick's goal of producing 2,000 megawatts of wind power, enough for 800,000 homes, by 2020... Ex- Bill Clinton crony backs ‘irreverent' Christy Mihos
Dick Morris, a former top adviser to President Clinton, says he's crossed party lines to strategize for Bay State gubernatorial hopeful Christy Mihos because the Cape Cod businessman is an "iconoclast" in the vein of former Govs. Ed King and Bill Weld. But Morris says he's joined Mihos because Massachusetts needs spending and tax cuts similar to those under King and Weld - or the state risks falling into a "death spiral"... Herald.

Mihos campaign coming up short in funds

Republican Christy Mihos's campaign for governor is in some disorder after it fell short of fund-raising goals, did not fulfill a promise to go up with television ads in October, and fired its director of communications as part of a staff shake-up.

Kevin Sowyrda, who has been Mihos's spokesman and media director since the summer, said he was told yesterday that he has been terminated. Sowyrda said he has not heard directly from Mihos, but that he had heard he was fired from another consultant to the campaign, whom he would not identify.

Sowyrda said the first hint came when his campaign cellphone shut down yesterday... Globe.

Pocono Playhouse owner pumped up insurance six months before fire
Ralph Miller Owned Falmouth Playhouse when it burned down too

Ralph Miller says he had his Pocono Playhouse reappraised and its insurance bumped up to $1.25 million for refinancing purposes about six months before fire destroyed the theater. Miller suspects the early morning Oct. 2 blaze - the third in 21 years to leave one of his theaters in ashes - was electrical in origin. Authorities said the cause remains under investigation.

Fires deemed to be arson destroyed Miller's Woodstock Playhouse in New York state in 1988 and the Falmouth Playhouse in Cape Cod, Mass., in 1994... Pocono Record.

‘Stealth' wind turbines avoid aviation radar interference
The spinning blades of wind turbines have been known to scramble the radar waves needed to track airplanes. Two European companies have partnered to apply radar-absorbing materials to wind turbines in an attempt to fix the problem.
Danish outfit Vestas and U.K. defense tech contractor QinetiQ say they are building wind turbines whose blades are made with glass-reinforced epoxy and plastic foam, which produces a smaller radar signature during testing...
Absorbing radar is not as easy as simply painting the wind turbine blades. A five-millimeter coating could add 1,200 kilograms to large turbine blades, notes Technology Review. Even if weight parity is achieved, there's still a cost premium to consider.
But for some wind farms whose operation has been blocked by the U.S. government over concern of disrupted radar waves - a troubled 130-turbine wind farm in Cape Cod, for example - the radar-absorbing technology might do the trick... Smart Planet.

Applications for affordable homes available

Habitat for Humanity announces that the deadline for submitting applications for two affordable homes (a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom) to be built in Dennis is Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m.

Applications are available at Dennis Public Library or by calling or stopping in at the Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod office, 657 Route 28, West Yarmouth, 508-775-3559. The homes are priced to be affordable to a family with an income of 65 percent of area median (example: $40,381 for a family of two)... Register.

Harvard to become largest institutional buyer of wind power in New England

Harvard University announced Monday that more than 10 percent of the electricity consumed on its Cambridge and Allston campuses soon will be supplied from a wind farm in northern Maine. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, this agreement will make Harvard the largest purchaser of wind power by a university or college in New England.

Last year, Harvard's Cambridge and Allston campuses used more than 247,000,000 kWh.

Under the agreement reached with First Wind, a Massachusetts-based company, Harvard will purchase half of the power generated by the planned Stetson Wind II... Cambridge Chronicle.

Fact or fiction? Everyone who faults me says there is no radar problem. But if there is a fix exists. Yet no one has told us what it is. I wonder why?

Maverick,

What do you have against letting the FAA do its work on the Cape Wind turbines and seeing what they say?

And interestingly, the FAA has provided a fix for the problems that they said might exist last spring. The FAA said that Cape Wind "might" cause clutter at an outdated, analog radar installation on the Cape. It said that there were 2 possible solutions:

1. $3 million to upgrade the old system
2. $15 million to replace it with a digital system

Now, the FAA might find more problems and we'll have to wait for them to tell us.

But you asked for someone to provide a fix to the radar problems. The FAA gave it to you in the spring, that is, they provided solutions to the problems identified at that time.

Were you paying attention to this? It was front page news. Come on, if you're going to spout opinions like this you'd better at least read the front page Cape Wind headlines to have a bit of knowledge!

"In September, Cape Cod Healthcare, the hospital’s parent company, announced plans to close the outpatient Behavioral Health Urgent Care Service, but Cape Cod Hospital spokesman David Reilly said that closure did not play a role in the October incident".

“This was not related to that. That was really a decision we made because the model wasn’t really working the way we intended it to work,” said Reilly.

"A press release dated Sept. 15 said the outpatient unit would close because it was increasing no-show rates for psychiatric appointments, increasing drug-seeking activities. Staff safety had become a concern...a lot of people in that urgent health care center were coming from off-Cape".

Maverick,

My point is: It should not take a long time to sort this matter out. The records should be sent to the family's attorney per request in their entirety so a complete and thorough investigation of the deceased may be properly assessed. CCH should have a separate facility to treat patients with psychiatric disorders as Boston has McLeans. I don't believe it is wise to mix the population with those who have medical problems unless there is adequate staff, locked floors and proper training. Regardless, the family will most likely be awarded damages based on negligence due to their breech in proper procedures and policies, or lack there of--if the visitor (husband) exhibited behaviors claimed, there was a protocol staff must abide by, if not, it's on them. And the fact it took so long to come out in the press, (3 wks?) also shows signs of negligence on the part of the hospital. I'm sure this type of unfortunate incident happens elsewhere, but it still doesn't make it right. I'd vote for a trial, but we both know how this will end--check writing and more PR campaigning for CCH.

Buzz [Member] writes:
This is a difficult situation for the family. I'm sure they'll be litigation. According to reports, the hospital does have procedures in place. They were trying to help this guy. Cape Cod isn't Boston and never will be. You can't stop people from coming to the hospital for psychiatric treatment. It's part of what they do.

If the Cape had a facility to properly treat outpatients and inpatients for addiction/behavioral/chemical imbalances, maybe it wouldn't have so many issues. It is the obligation of the officials, politicians and DPH to ensure that every region have adequate treatment facilities for its residents. I don't believe that the majority of patients seen at the other facility (which they claim closed in Sept.) mainly consisted of "off Cape" patients. You have plenty of your own residents that need treatment, trust me. And the sad part is--the one's that need it the most DON'T GET IT! And I'm not talking about those with dependency issues, either.

Jonathan, (writes on this site) mentioned he had a very bad experience at CCH ER ("but they were good with the kids...")..my ex-beau's family(100 yrs+)in Sandwich said the hospital has a sub-standard reputation. I know they have tried to enlist staff from the BI for their cardiac unit, so how is it going? Don't they have continued fiscal problems? Is that attributed to their excellence in providing quality care? Maybe doc's hate union workers.

You can't compare this incident w/MGH--two different incidents. The patient at MGH stabbed a doctor several times before being shot by security, which was justifiable. The incident at CCH is questionable since the visitor was not carrying a weapon and the injuries to staff were not serious, as stated. Why don't they provide the names of staff involved? Is there a good reason for that?

You are biased and attack every post I write, even when other posters comment similar if not the same comments about the unfairness of reporting and improperly investigated cases which may be damaging to the reputation of Cape Cod.

Do you enjoy harassing and stalking me on line? Is this how you get your JOLLIES? You are an angry man who needs help. Maybe your delusion of Cape Cod being a perfect place is your own inadequacies being revealed.

The first step in helping your residents is admitting there is a problem. You wish to continue with your arrogance and hostility towards me, just keep singling me out--then continue to live in your narrow minded, shallow world. There are plenty of people on the Cape that see what goes on there and want changes. I don't blame them. I wanted some changes too, but realized that for some reason, they enjoy the dysfunction. OCHS was another place with bad management, narrow sighted leaders, staff with their schoolyard antics and inappropriate behaviors in the workplace. If they ran good organizations, you would have skilled and professional people working there, but you have to pay them a cost of living you can't handle or won't, WHATEVER. Just keep writing those checks.

HEARSAY based on two people who were not present during the incident:

The DA and the spokesperson continually named in the paper. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Where is the weapon used posing a dangerously fatal threat to staff members reported in the "scuffle" with the visitor?

The staff members are listed as "sources", not interviewed by the Cape Cod Times separately from the spokesperson who seems to have all the answers, because HE WAS THERE.

The employees are out of the limelight and not available for interview. Obviously, there is more to the story.

You know what is really interesting about these two cases? MGH stabbing/shooting--

CCH incident--(lets not say anything more, we certainly don't want to insult any of the "sources", God forbid)

Incident at MGH--

You can google the story & pull up various articles & guess what?

THEY LIST NAMES OF PEOPLE INVOLVED...what do you know? Does not read, "sources said".

NAMES-patient/attacker, doctor who was assaulted, security guard, witnesses who came forward to give their own version of events...well, well...but I guess on the Cape, we have to wait until they get all their facts straight before we hear anything significant. I see how it is.

How long was it from the time of the attack at MGH until all names were disclosed in the papers? Same hour? Same day, Same week? Well, I know it wasn't 3 weeks later...or years later until information was presented in the papers. No, you've got your own version of how things should be presented to the public.

That's fine....just as long as you are willing to ADMIT THAT VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF HOW REPORTING IS HANDLED IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS..

How's it going? How about CCH ranks #1 in the state for emergency cardiac care... better than the teaching hospitals in Boston. Did you know that it's also a partner with Brigham and Women's?

Still waiting cru... where did you get your information about the "validated threat"? Can't answer can you? You'd prefer to talk about Jonathan's foot operation.... how sad.
