Urban Legends and the Harm They Do

Everything you always wanted to know about the Constitution but were afraid to ask

Mikhail Gorbachev, a dedicated communist, once said (paraphrased): We both seek freedom.  You (the U.S.A.) provide freedom to choose; we provide freedom from want.

There, in a nutshell, you have the lure of communism: It comforts those who doubt their ability to survive in a free market economy; it offers instead the warm and comfortable teat of a "caring" government.

Until 1916, America chose liberty; ever since, it has been tilting toward security; in the 1960s, the tilt became a sharp slope.

Urban Legend #1 - Regarding the Constitution as a "living document" has had beneficial results.

The Constitution was regarded, until 1912, as the best exposition of the road to freedom ever composed.  So unique and hope-filled was it that some felt it was inspired by a higher power who guided a unique group of motivated men to agree that, whatever their differences and preferences, freedom was the highest value -- and, come what may, they would have it and pass it on.  They succeeded -- for a time.

Then came progressivism, which today we call liberalism, represented first by Theodore Roosevelt (a Republican who became progressivism's first champion when he failed to win the nomination of his party), and was then lifted to the status of a dominant ideology in 1916 under Woodrow Wilson (a Democrat who warmly embraced its central tenets).

It was during those dark days that the Constitution became a "living document," gleefully interpreted as such by a line of liberal presidents, especially Wilson, FDR and Johnson, and the judges that they and others appointed.

"Freedomism" and progressivism have one thing in common: They both see before them the consequences of an imperfect system of government.  Their distinct difference is this:

  • The former seeks solutions through the states and the people, and it fundamentally believes that federal power to act has been properly and specifically limited by the language of the Constitution.  It seeks constant improvement, not perfection.
  • The latter seeks solutions through government action, and it fundamentally believes the restrictive language in the Constitution needs to be interpreted in the light of modern needs, as determined by those who have executive and judicial responsibilities.  It seeks the perfect society.

Some believe these differences to be legalistic and of no consequence to the average man.  Not true.  Walking away from the form of government established by the Founders, and its realistic objectives -- the trend for almost a century -- has had dire consequences with universal impact.

Government is bigger and more intrusive; taxes are higher, debt is unbelievably large and, most important, freedom is less.  As the caring government has grown, poverty has persisted, education is inferior, national unity has disappeared and national defense is weaker.

America in 2009, after a half-century of government intrusion, faces a fragmented society, an unstable economy, a Godless future and devaluation of the dollar, which could destroy the buying power of the accumulated savings of those it said it would assist.

The Founders provided a Constitution grounded in cement, that could be changed only after a laborious process of state and national review was completed.  Their successors, who have avoided that process, turned it into legalistic mush subject to interpretation by the next imaginative politician, lawyer or judge with a "worthy" cause.

Urban Legend #2 - The Federal Government Can Efficiently Manage A Nationalized Health Care System

FDR and Truman opened the constitutional door for the creation of the Welfare State.  Lyndon Johnson drove a truck through it.

John Kennedy/Lyndon Johnson took office in 1961 -- this was the beginning of the new Welfare State.  Federal revenue in 1960 was $92 billion; in 2008, $2.5 trillion -- twenty-seven times higher.  The cost of Human Resources (the Welfare State) in 1960 was $26 billion; in 2008, $1.8 trillion -- 69 times higher.

There, in a nutshell, you have the primary reason for the choking level of national debt and the threat to the value of the dollar, and your savings.

Your government did that to you.  It knowingly collected and spent your money in this way.  The debt is not a mistake.  It was created by elected officials who are doing more of the same today.  It was not primarily caused by the costs of wars and recessions; it was primarily caused by selfish politicians who bought your votes with federal gifts, and by voters who returned the same people to office, and are still doing so.

Every major program that currently sustains many Americans is in jeopardy because of excessive spending.

Based on its own record, the federal government cannot manage a national health care system efficiently and, beyond that, it should remove itself and its corrosive influence from other social programs with all possible speed.

Urban Myth #3 - Conservative and Republican are Synonymous Terms

Republicans are political activists who seek power because they share a common view of how the nation should be governed.  Some, not all, republicans are conservatives.

Conservatives band together because they share a world view about man, who he is, where he came from and how he should be treated by government and everybody else.

Most, not all, conservatives are, politically, republicans because that party, of the two major parties, comes closest to sharing their views.  Many conservatives are moderates; some are democrats.

According to a recent Gallup poll (Oct. 27, 2009), Americans view themselves as follows: conservative - forty percent; moderate - thirty-eight percent; liberal - twenty percent  (Washington and the communications industries are dominated by the minority group --  liberals).

As a general statement, conservatives are constitutional originalists -- they respect the creation of the Founders.  Some, not all, Republicans share that view.

Republicans seldom criticize a Republican president -- mavericks like John McCain, are the exception.  Conservatives criticize any president, dependent on his actions.  It was conservatives, for example, who turned the tide on President Bush's attempt to grant amnesty to illegal aliens.

"Ideas Have Consequences," said Richard Weaver in 1948, and his comment has the same eternal verity as the language of the Constitution.

You will and you have acted as you've believed.  Verify carefully the truths you embrace and the labels you use, for they will define you over time.

As an independent, I dismiss the platforms of both parties..corrupt, self serving, big government, protagonists who have totally imploded but continue their quest for power.

The constitution has been relegated to a worthless piece of paper by pundits, schools, media, government, and scholars.

However, there is a growing movemment, under the radar, ignored by even the most ardent pro US media, that is armed with the principles of the Constitution, and will vote out all anti Constitutionalists come next election cycle.
Former repubs, dems, green, etc all with one goal..real change!

The infilitration of the GOP by liberal elements over the years has been most recently demonstrated in NY state when the GOP candidate--who had been fully backed by the orthodox GOP leadership--withdrew from the race and actually endorsed the Democratic candidate in the face of the growing strength of a Conservative challenger.

This is clear and indisputable proof (as if any were needed) that American conservatives and other rightists cannot trust the GOP to represent their interests.

The RINO GOP of the Beltway is only marginally less a foe than is the Democratic Party.

Exactly!

We are inundated with anti constitution proponents, especially here, who embrace the demonization of our nation, yet want to be saved by the government(and their respective party), to save themselves from the prior gang of thieves.

The USA should just go Totally Evil for a generation and rob/steal/exploit the weaker nations in order to support our Americanized lifestyle. People might say that we're already doing this, but I see our current efforts as Half-Hearted.

We should erase the border with Mexico and add them as a 51st state.... but we will exact a generation of their youth as soldiers for our New World Order. Once the Mexis serve their 18 years, we invade south America and work the same Mojo... sending 100 million Brazilians off to fight the Chinese.

Absorbing Mexico would be a huge burden on our welfare system, but we could make up the difference with a very aggressive foreign policy that gives us 100% control of the world's natural resources.

While the Mexican youth are in the Army (e take them from the cribs, like Sparta), we can also force them to learn English and stuff.

Of course, this plan will leave a lot of lettuce unpicked in California, but that's what Canada is for. I never trusted Canada, and they have a dangerous amount of natural resouces per person. We'll take that, friends.

We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. "China is proposing to replace the US dollar with the Hong Kong dollar

At a top secret high-finance meeting scheduled for this weekend, China will propose that the US dollar be replaced by the Hong Kong dollar, according to a senior MI6 source. The proposal is under serious consideration by the backers of the new financial system.

As we have previously reported most US dollars ever created are now backed by gold at the rate of 1/28th of a gram per dollar. The fraudulent Federal Reserve Board fiat dollars issued after September, 2008 are not. Nor are any dollars derived from fraudulent "derivatives." So, to replace the US dollar with the Hong Kong dollar all that would be required would be to rename the gold-backed dollars. Any new Hong Kong dollars issued would be backed by the Renminbi, according to the Chinese proposal."

President Obama is going to China this weekend, isn't he?

The 357 weighs a ton and he couldnt possible reload a revolver.

I think that the investigation will probably show that the .357 was a just a backup in case the semi-automatic jammed, and was fired relatively few times.

And what about those deaths in Seattle? Shot point-blank. Tragic. And ignored by you.

Dear Mutt:

You are basing your comments on the assumption that they actually have the Ft. Hood shooter.

You ARE BASING your comment -most of them-
on the assumption that you really know
what is going on in this world after you
click from site-to-site reading all this
self-authorized conspiracy theory nonsense, some of which could even be written by kids and you would'nt know it.

I do not ASSUME they have the Fort Hill shooter,
I ACCEPT the information that has been presented
by the accredited authorities, and not by jeffrense.com (he was one of the first ones that did'nt post links to other sites) or Billy-Bob's Free Apocalypse Forcast, or any of these nonsense websites that take one rumour, build upon it, re-mutate it, and sell it to naive persons.

I just noticed:

bitter..."How do YOU feel about the Arab children and moms and dads brothers and sister aunts and uncles dying for this "war"?"

I feel Terrible! Most are innocent victims whether they be Arabic, Jewish, European or American. The whole thing is sick and a premeditated wrong perpetrated on society by those that lust for power and wealth. And most Americans fall in that category.

Oh thank you maverick...that was worth all the bad words we've ever had.

as for you ms. mutt-bunny;
"the New York Times finally underlined what some of us noticed from nearly the start: the media fell hook, line and sinker once again for a military account of what happened during the tragedy.

First, it was the "death" of Major Hasan, not corrected for many hours. Then, for days, the story of how a white female cop brought down the shooter, even as she was receiving serious wounds. Yet I noticed just hours after the attack that scattered eyewitnesses, via the Web and Twitter, were saying that the killer re-loaded after Kimberly Munley went down.

How could he have done that if she had just plugged him four times, supposedly ending the rampage?"

it's not just rense.com missy-
It's anybody who has a sense of --"Wait a minute! Something doesn't add up here."

but from it:
"Citizens for Legitimate Government report that a retired military source has emailed them as follows: 'I spent 10 years at Ft. Hood. There is no way this 'official' story is legitimate. No way would a room full of combat vets allow this one shooter to get off over 100 rounds. And, it is not normal for the outside security guards to be there. They are at the MP station, and also at the main gates. This means the room full of soldiers processing must have been pinned down; multiple shooters is the only plausible scenario. This sounds like MAJ Hasan has been used, and perhaps is a patsy'."

ok done for real now, but how can anyone not question this?
