Provincetown's ‘Woman in the Dunes' murder case to be re-opened
Bludgeoned body of young woman found murdered 35 years ago
The investigation into the slaying of the so-called "Woman in the Dunes," the town's only unsolved murder and the state's oldest unsolved murder, is about to be revived. Police Chief Jeff Jaran recently convinced the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to take on the 35-year-old case, sometimes also referred to as the "Lady in the Dunes."
As part of the new investigation, retired police officers and FBI agents will pore over the voluminous case file to see if they can find any new leads. In addition, the center will work with the Smithsonian Museum to try to identify the young woman, whose decomposed, bludgeoned body was found by a young girl walking her dog on July 26, 1974... Commission ruling means delay for Cape Wind
The nation's first offshore wind farm faces more delay after a Massachusetts official said two Indian tribes' claim to Nantucket Sound needed more study.
The decision by Brona Simon, executive director of the Massachusetts Historical Society, means final approval for the Cape Wind project, proposed in 2001, will be delayed by weeks and perhaps months.
Cape Wind seemed near final approval after it passed a major environmental review in January, but that's been delayed by the Wampanoag tribes in Mashpee and Martha's Vineyard. The tribes argue the entire sound is eligible for a listing on the National Register of Historic Places as their "traditional cultural property"... Globe.

Hundreds apply for Yarmouth recreation job
If the number of applicants for the Yarmouth Recreation Department's principal office assistant job is any sign of the current economy, it looks like unemployment is still high.
Recreation Director Pat Armstrong posted the opening both in the newspaper and on Craigslist.com and received 300 responses. "I believe it is the economy. It's everywhere. It's not just Yarmouth," said Town Administrator Bob Lawton, who received 190 applications for his administrative assistant position that was vacant in July... The Register.

Harwich School Committee Recommends 6.36 Percent Budget Increase
The school committee has put forth a $15.5 million budget for FY 2011, a 6.36 percent increase over the present year. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carolyn Cragin called the request a "bare bones budget" during a public hearing last week...
School Committee Chair Polly Hemstock drew attention to three initiatives contained in the budget. One is the reconfiguring of school populations through the relocation of the fifth grade from the elementary school to the middle school (see related story).
The second is providing a fully integrated foreign language program with the addition of a full-time middle school language teacher, which will add an additional year of language learning at the high school. The third is the addition of a new autism program at the elementary school with the hiring of a full-time autism specialist and instructional assistant... Chronicle.

Yarmouth officer, town sued in fatal shooting

Andre Martins with daughter Leticia.
The woman who was in the car with Andre Martins when he was shot and killed by a Yarmouth Police officer last summer is filing a lawsuit. Camila Campos has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the town of Yarmouth and Officer Christopher Van Ness who fired the gun at Martins on July 27, 2008 after Martins refused to stop for police.
The Cape and Islands District Attorney, Michael O'Keefe, cleared Van Ness a few months after the incident saying the officer's life was in danger and deadly force was justified.... The Register.

In Boston, the policy states: "Firearms shall not be discharged at a moving or fleeing vehicle unless the officer or another person is currently being threatened with deadly force by means other than the moving vehicle (emphasis added). The moving vehicle itself shall not constitute the threatened use of deadly force. Therefore, officers shall move out of the path of any oncoming vehicle instead of discharging a firearm at it or any of its occupants."
Boston changed its policy about seven years ago.." (For safety's sake, change the policy-CCTimes, opinion)*

We're going all out this week:
The 35 year old case of lady in the dunes--wasn't she already identified, guess it wasn't a positive ID. Gold teeth? Hayden Clark was a suspect? Can't they find better use for taxpayer dollars? I'm sure there are fresher cases around the money could be better spent on.
YPD--girlfriend sues. Well, isn't that a surprise. Good thing they don't have a hospital in that town. Did they find out who raided the guys safe yet? Was his car a space ship that could hover from side to side?
All these stories in less than two weeks. What a bonanza of media coverage.
Too bad none of these stories will ever have a CONCLUSION to events which occurred. I guess we can only ask for sooooo much from our esteemed world of journalism.
