Pair arrested in Orleans for possession and uttering counterfeit bills

Eastham men try to pay for burgers with bogus bills

(Left to right) Benjamin H. Covell, 19, and Tobias R. Larsen, 20, both of Eastham were arrested Friday for passing and possessing counterfeit bills in Orleans.

ORLEANS - Friday, November 13 at 11:42 a.m., Officers of the Orleans Police Department were alerted to a motor vehicle and occupants that had just passed a counterfeit $20 bill at Wendy’s Hamburgers in Orleans. Earlier in the day, the Orleans Police had issued a Merchant Alert to area stores that some counterfeit $20 bills had been passed the night prior.

An alert manager was able to identify the same bill, and was able to provide information to the department. A short time later that vehicle was located behind a gas station, and the occupants matched the descriptions given. Evidence was found within the vehicle and on the persons involved.

Benjamin H. Covell, 19, of Eastham, and Tobias R. Larsen, 20, also of Eastham were placed under arrest. They were both charged with uttering a counterfeit note, and possessing additional counterfeit notes. Larsen also received an additional charge of disorderly conduct, as well as an outstanding warrant out of Barnstable District Court.

Both were arraigned in Orleans District Court, where Covell was released on personal recognizance. Larsen was held at the Barnstable House of Corrections, due to ongoing criminal matters.

I think publishing these picturess in this way is a lousy idea. We did away with displaying infracors in the stocks two centuries ago. These ordinary people do not deserve this exposure to public ridicule in booking photographs, in spite of your disingenuous disclaimer. Iff they aren't guilty yet, let them return to their lives in peace.

I think public imbarrasment is a great idea, with our judicial system, it's the only punishment they actually receive!

If someone is being charged with passing counterfit bills their picture should be posted so that other businesses will know what they look like. Good job to the employee at Wendy's for noticing it was a counterfit & taking quick action.

I DISAGREE with notawonk...if 'ordinary people' put/get themselves into a legal/criminal predicament, then having their 'booking photos' posted is part of the package...perhaps, as grumpasaurus says, a bit of public embarrassment might go a long way...Maureen Tuohy-Bedford/West Yarmouth.

So if publishing booking photos is such a good idea, why are these limited to Yarmouth? If this is "Cape Cod" Today, do the whole cape - all towns - even the state police arrests! That would bring in the voyeur audience.

A further point: these people aren't perpetrators - they're suspects - they've been hauled in and had their pictures took but they haven't been convicted. That's a major point of our legal system. And somebody who uses the name "legalizeit" sure sounds like a person who should have (except perhaps by the grace of their God) had their picture in this list for breaking whatever law it is they want to legalize.

I totally agree with notawonk. I hate these pictures. And I think it's creepy as all get-out.
Does this make people feel superior?
It's such an invasion of privacy too.
Ugh-really creepy. "Spy on your neighbors while we spy on you".

Don't even worry about paying the fine, legal. The morons who threw this new law together never figured in a penalty for not paying it. Most cops wouldn't waste their time writing one of those by-law tickets.

RE: Why are there so many criminals in Yarmouth?

That's because Yarmouth is home
to the International Spelling Bee championships.

Did'nt you see the announcement in the papers?

Spelling contests can put a lot
of stress on the human brain.

Some of the contestants who are less
fortunate tend to go a little
crazy and shoplift dictionaries
or drive drunk to the bookstore.

They also like to drink Manischewitz wine because it's harder to spell and it's cheap too.
