Vote early and often

The Primary is Tuesday, December 8
Every good citizen should take the time to vote

By Walter Brooks

Many years ago when the redoubtable Bill Breisky was still the Editor of The Cape Cod Times, I happened to be talking to him around this time of year, and I mentioned that my wife and I were about to leave for a month-long tour of China.

He asked me if we had voted as an absentee voters yet, and I replied that we hadn't.

Bill then read me the riot act about my responsibility as a citizen.

Needless to say we took the time to go to the Town Hall and make out our absentee ballots before we left.

Bill Breisky had that effect on both friends and readers alike.

I never forgot Bill's admonition, and while I doubt very much I'm in his league as an Editor, very few are, I still want to urge you to follow his advice and vote next Tuesday or get an absentee ballot if you will be away.

Bad politicians are elected by good people who don't vote.

The cynical phrases "Vote early and often" are variously attributed to three different Chicagoans: Al Capone, the famous gangster; Richard J. Daley, mayor from 1955 to 1976; and William Hale Thompson, mayor from 1915-1923 and 1931-1935. All three were notorious for their corruption and their manipulation of the democratic process.
It is most likely that Thompson invented the phrase, and Capone and Daley later repeated it.

"attributed to three different Chicagoans". Why no mention of Obama?

He and Acorn have brought "Vote early and often" to a new level.

Your thought "Bill then read me the riot act about my responsibility as a citizen." Which was always follow the money. Trust me WB you are a good citizen.

Walter, Thanks for the tip.
I am truly disillusioned with politics, perhaps to my own detriment. I guess I just feel it's all a show, that the kingdom is sort of locked up in a system that could give two !@#%s about me, my thoughts, or my ideas to improve the nation. I'd really love to run for office despite this cynicism, but I remember the advice of elders when I was young and idealistic, that once you get a slice of the pie you're too enamoured with the taste to challenge its contents.(besides, I could never afford to run)
I guess what really gets me is the notion that we all are Americans, yet we are so preocccupied with labels, partisan bickering, conservative this and liberal that- No wonder we have such difficulty uniting. All energy is spent delineating and nurturing divisions rather than seeking points on which to agree.
Now obviously we are a diverse nation, and some dissent is required to keep us pure, but in any organization we draw the line when arguments taint our larger goals or hobble our progress.
I feel we need to reorganize American politics.(sigh)

What's so interesting? The yuks have it because its a dem state. Put up a poll asking who they will vote for in the dem race and the yuks will be small due to a lack of GOP votes. Not rocket science.
