YARMOUTH - On Sunday, January 3, 2010 at 8:09 a.m., the Yarmouth Police Department began receiving reports from citizens who discovered that their motor vehicles were broken into sometime overnight.

LOCK IT OR LOSE IT
UPDATE January 5, 2010:

On Monday, two new additional overnight car break-ins were reported in the same Bass River neighborhood of South Yarmouth.  The YPD now has 12 reported overnight motor vehicle break-ins in the same neighborhood over a 2-day period.  In all 12 incidents the vehicles were left unlocked by their owners.
Let’s not make it easy for the criminals who are out randomly at night “shopping”.  Shopping is the term used by these thieves who go from door to door and check to see if it opens.  If it does—they go inside and “shop around” for something that they can easily steal.  If it is locked—they do not enter.
The Yarmouth Police Department is proactive and needs your help. Join our team.  Help us prevent and solve crime.  Be vigilant and take the easy step by locking your doors each and every night and report any suspicious persons or activity immediately to the Yarmouth Police Department by calling 911.

By 4 p.m. the Yarmouth Police had investigated ten incidents that had all occurred in the Bass River neighborhood of Sunset Drive, May Lane, River Street, South Street, Morning Drive, Elm Drive and Pleasant Street in South Yarmouth.

Consistent with all past incidents of overnight break-ins, ALL of the vehicles entered had been left unlocked by their owners.

The following items were taken during the break-ins:

  • Compact Discs
  • GPS Devices
  • Cash
  • Credit Cards
  • Purses and Wallets
  • Scratch Tickets

The Yarmouth Police Department with assistance from Crime Scene Investigators from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department is actively investigating these crimes and reminds everyone to follow the recommendations listed below:

  • Park your vehicle in a well-lit area
  • Keep the windows rolled up and the vehicle locked
  • Remove valuables or keep valuables in your vehicle hidden
  • Be vigilant and contact police immediately if you see or hear anything suspicious by calling 911

Anyone with information about these crimes is urged to contact the Yarmouth Police Department Detective Division at 508-775-0445 extension 2134 or by email at cpeterson@yarmouth.ma.us.

I am so glad I moved out of that derelict River/Pleasant Street area of Bass River.

Knowing how down trodden it is, you would think they would beef up the patrols in that area.
