Toyota crashes into medical building in West Yarmouth

Toyota accerated unexpectedly according to driver's daughter

Mechanics, not age, said to be reason for the crash, driver tried to stop

WEST YARMOUTH - Around1:25 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, the driver of a Toyota Rav4 crashed into the patients' entrance of the office of Dr. Peter Bentivegna, a plastic and hand surgeon, on Ansel Hallett Road, just off Willow Street.

The elderly driver who was behind the wheel of her Toyota Rav 4 when it slammed into a medical building says there's something wrong with the car. Anne Wilkins bought the car in November, and it is among the millions of Toyotas recalled because of problems with gas pedals sticking.

Her daughter said her mother had taken the car to her dealer just last month to get it remedied.

Daughter, Kim Wilkins said, "She put her foot on the brake, and next thing you know, the car accelerates and it's in the building, and she looks down after she crashes, because her head's down, and her foot is still on the brake."

"Unfortunately I think that people are going to think it's because she's a senior," said her daughter. "I believe it was the car for sure. I mean, I don't believe a car can launch into an office. It just doesn't make any sense."

The building, Seaside Medical Offices, houses several physicians' practices.

The Yarmouth Police and Fire Departments responded to the call.  The female driver of the Toyota was already out of the car when the Yarmouth Fire Department arrived.

She was treated at the scene, then transported to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries considered to be not life-threatening.

According to a Yarmouth Police Officer at the scene, there were about a half a dozen people in Dr. Bentivegna's office when the Toyota crashed into the front of the building. There were no other reported injuries.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

At least we can blame this one on Toyota instead of old age... maybe.

Even bad drivers have a built in excuse now.

Glad no one was hurt.

Just reaching across for her soda,
Even though she was well past her quota,
'stead of facial alteration,
She got fast acceleration,
And of course, she was in a Toyota.

Oh I absolutely call bullsh*t on this one. This is operator error, no doubt about it.
Think about it, a 2000lb vehicle, with a stuck accelerator wouldn't stop until it travelled all the way through that timber building. For that car to basically "bump" that building would have REQUIRED that the gas simply be tapped pulling into that parking space.
The expert witness is the woman's DAUGHTER? who wasn't even in the vehicle?
It's hard to see your parent's get old, but wake up lady. The car was serviced less than a month ago? The cops will test this vehicle and guess what they'll find? nada. lucky this old lady didn't kill somebody.
