Clean Power Now blasts Cape Wind opponents for delay tactics

Grassroots group accuses opponents of taking money from Coal & Oil interests

Clean Power Now (CPN), the rapidly growing local grassroots group with 14,000 members  based on Cape Cod, today blasted the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound (APNS) which is the lead the group opposing Cape Wind, America's first offshore wind farm.

CPN says the Alliance is guilty of' "gross attempts to deny this region the benefits of clean energy and for taking dirty coal money as a big part of its funding for lawyers scheming to delay the final review of the renewable energy project."

"We plan to highlight the coal & petroleum coke connections to the opponent group."

Clean Power Now reacted to reports yesterday revealing that the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound has requested a three week delay in the start of proceedings before the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities concerning the power purchase agreement between National Grid and Cape Wind. The agreement is one of the final steps before Cape Wind can start construction of 130 wind turbines and begin producing clean energy for the region.

"The Alliance, for the past nine years, has taken millions of dollars in funding for its lawyers and its smear campaign from people who have made their fortunes in the coal, oil and petroleum coke industries," said Barbara Hill, executive director of Clean Power Now. "We plan to highlight the coal and petroleum coke connections to the opponent group. So, here we have the fossil fuel industry trying to stop a wind farm, people should be outraged," she added.

MS Hill continued, "Cape Wind has undergone the most thorough, exhaustive review of any energy project in the region and now the opponent group wants more time for delay, delay and delay. We say: no way and people should know what's going on here" adding that the delays may end up costing citizens if federal clean energy incentive deadlines are not met.

Things don't go better with Coke Koch

In an October 2005 story in the Cape Cod Times story Koch is quoted as asying, "I freely admit I don't want to look at (the turbines)," adding that the environmental and cost benefits of wind energy are overblown. Those perceived benefits, Koch said, can be "seductive." He compared it to walking into a strip bar, and falling under the gaze of an exotic dancer. "It's so seductive, but if you go over there you can get in a lot of trouble, and get a lot of diseases."

William Koch, CEO of the Oxbow Group and long-time leader and heavy financer of the Alliance has been in the fossil fuel business for many years and is on the record as a significant donor to the Alliance in its attempt to deny the benefits of Cape Wind.

Koch, member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance is the largest known donor to the opposition group, having donated in the millions of dollars to date, according to publicly available media reports.

Mr. Koch is the CEO and owner of Oxbow, his privately held energy company accoding to a press release from the CPN.

Two prominent divisions of Oxbow Energy are in coal mining and petroleum coke. Oxbow Energy also sells coal combustion waste.

In addition to making large donations to the opposition group, Koch has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on anti-Cape Wind lobbying, according to public media reports.

Clean Power Now started on Cape Cod in 2003 and has grown to over 14,000 members strong. According to public documents and media reports, the Alliance to Protect, some say Protract, Nantucket Sound is largely funded by waterfront home owners and people with interests in the fossil fuel indistry.

Are the People being Herd?

The Wind Energy Siting Reform Act (H4687) passed last week. Now, House and Senate meet to come to terms with wording. Our Senator Therese Murray (Senate President) is ram-rodding the mediations and, additionally, happens to be up for re-election.

I ask the good Senator, will you listen to your constituents concerns or be controlled by Wind Industry power and propaganda?

The renderings from our governments (Federal, State & Local) down through the various advocacy groups tout the need to be conscientious about “going green”, about re-cycling, about “green-house” gases, about “green energy” resources. All deserve selective merit.

The Falmouth WWTF Turbine Project was overwhelmingly approved by town meeting in 2005. The lion share of locals gave it their rubber stamp. I was all for it! It was going to mitigate potential town budget shortfalls and help the “green” cause.

Mr. Brent Harold’s July 13th Cape Cod Times piece offers insight that is rather unorthodox but very appropriate given the present climate on Beacon Hill. “What's good about NIMBY is that it is only humane and logical to respect the experience of those living in the relevant backyard.” By virtue of proximity and shortsighted setback regulation, I am that NIMBY. I offer this experience.

My solace from air traffic control stress is my 2 acres of gardens. Since WWTF turbine #1 has been operational I suffer pressure headaches when the wind direction is from the north-northeast. The best description of my headache is the pressure experienced just before your ears pop while an aircraft climbs or descends through pressure altitude.

The “pop”, in the case of being a passenger, offers relief. In my case, relief is gained not by a “pop” of my ears, rather, by being chased from my gardens to the my basement, away from the pressure impact. It’s awfully difficult to garden from my basement!

Wind advocacy groups like CIWIN (Cape & Islands Wind Information Network), CIRenew (Cape & Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative), our good Senator Murray and their respective agendas to dispel opposition to industrial wind turbines, place great emphasis on categorizing me as a NIMBY. They and theirs would have you believe my headache is only with the annoyance of the turbine being built in my backyard.

CIRenew’s Dr. McMurtry, who provided argument last Thursday night at Upper Cape Regional Tech, that no ill health effect from wind turbines exist, identifies me and those like me, as crazy. It is not prudent to categorize an FAA air traffic controller for the past 30 years as “crazy”! Further, it is not logical or respectful to minimize my experience when there exist collaborative science based research validating my health concern experience.

Bottom-line, the fancy of wind energy propaganda flatters the uninformed, exploits the well intentioned, and profits the political and private sector scoundrel. All this made possible because there's no penalty for lying in the energy marketplace. Have WE, as a society, arrived at a point where our legal and political culture administers no negative consequence for making false or misleading claims to sell wind energy?

Senator Murray’s wind agenda appears more crucial than answers to hard questions asked of her by constituents. Falmouth Town Hall seems willing to participate in this endeavor. Yet, she is intent on stealing the very essence of local government rule away from those town entities charged with that responsibility. Instead, she would prefer control for siting to be left on Beacon Hill.

The infancy of this new resource comes with many associated problems. Falmouth’s turbine siting problem is best left to Falmouth Madame Senator. The audacity, to think of us not up to the task! Our good Senator marches “out of step” with the Democratic ways of Town meeting and Town determination!

Falmouth seems genuinely sincere in finding the equilibrium between citizens well being and getting the biggest bang for the wind energy buck. This coupling of Town Hall and Resident must both act as our guide and continue to define how turbine siting and permitting proceeds across the State. And finally, the good people of the Commonwealth who value intellectual honesty should not quietly be fleeced by such mendacity, especially from their government!

Falmouth is finding an "equilibrium" alright. They can provide us with clean energy, yet sit on their thumbs when it comes to clean, safe drinking water! So using petroleum and coal are "the best possible energy source?" Just wait until they start fracking close to here. You'll get paid off with a fancy check, think you got it made- then your water will be completely contaminated. I agree there haven't been enough tests run to prove turbines "clean." Why don't they set them up in Washington for a couple years- test it out at the whitehouse? If there are no problems or ill effects I'm all for it! BP just without conscience polluted the whole gulf of Mexico, OUR water has been contaminated with fecal matter and they fire the workers at the water dept. when they were following protocol? On top of it they treat the water and prices go up? Yeah- I REALLY trust local government too. (Sarcasm)

There's nothing new in this article. We've known for years that Koch of the coal industry was a huge contributor to the Alliance.

I'd be all for giving the Alliance some extra time to review the Cape Wind financial data if there was a snowball's chance in hell that they'd treat the data responsibly. But there isn't an iota of evidence from the past that they'll do so. An extra 3 weeks will be nothing more than 3 more weeks in which the Alliance can perform accounting gymnastics in order to produce a string of damning but dishonest financial arguments. Heck, let's give them 3 months. They can probably "prove" that Cape Wind will destroy the entire world economy in that amount of time! I wouldn't put it past them.

The Alliance has cried wolf too many times to deserve the benefit of the doubt today.

And timing is everything. I'm sure Cape Wind is counting on some federal ARRA grants (in lieu of 30% tax credit) to make the numbers work... but construction has to start by Dec. 31, 2010. Delays can make it even more expensive.

Experiences such as described by coolwind have lead to the realization that wind turbines need to be 1.5 miles or more from any residence.

Current regulations are primarily concerned with physical dangers such as fall zones or blade failure flying distance. Noise annoyance, and health effects from wind turbine syndrome have yet to be addressed.
