Cape West wins in Fenway; Free days in the parks; Alliance loses again; Sewer work 'Death Sentence' for businesses; Yarmouth override fails; Harwich's double agent; Taunton drug sweep catches Cape & Islands men

The New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park is free for two days in August along with the other 390 National Parks, see story below. NPS photo.

National Parks are free Aug. 14-15

Yarmouth override fails
School budget unsettled

Yarmouth voters rejected a $503,000 Proposition 2 1/2 override at the polls Tuesday, setting up the possibility of a district meeting to agree on a budget for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District.
Yarmouth special Town Meeting on Monday night approved the override to fund the town's portion of the regional school district budget. Approval at both Town Meeting and the polls is required for the override to go into effect... Register.

Harwich resident double agent in Red spy plot to buy first politician

The U.S.- Russian spy swap that occurred earlier this month was eerily reminiscent for the man who used to drive a vehicle around town with a license plate that read "SPYMAN." It brought him back 50 years to the heart of the Cold War when he served as a double-agent as Russian spies sought to buy their first American politician.
Richard A. Flink has served as chairman of the board of appeals here, 30 years as a corporate general counsel for a medical company on the New York Stock Exchange, and had his only attempt to run for public office, a seat on the New York State Assembly, paid for by the Russian government... Harwich Chronicle.

Chatham Sewer Work Could Be ‘Death Sentence' For Businesses

A small group of business owners along Route 28 had a clear message for town officials Tuesday morning: losing another shoulder season to sewer construction could put them out of business.
A number of merchants and restaurateurs reported losing significant revenue because of road detours and construction delays in the spring, and when work resumes in September, the economic impact could be even greater, they argued... Chatham Chronicle.

State denies Alliance request for longer review
Move won't sway decision on National Grid deal

The most vocal group to oppose Cape Wind was dealt a setback yesterday, when the state Department of Public Utilities denied its request for more time to review confidential cost and pricing data about the proposed Nantucket Sound wind farm.

The state agency, which must approve a proposed deal by the utility National Grid to buy power from Cape Wind, said the request by the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound for three additional weeks of review was unnecessary because the group has already had "adequate time'' to review much of the material. The agency also said that after the Alliance was granted legal status in the review process, it waited a week to request information that it said was needed for its review from involved parties.

The extension's denial is not expected to hasten the state's decision on whether to approve the purchase agreement with National Grid, a deal that is seen as critical to Cape Wind's efforts to raise construction financing... Globe.

Unprecedented drug sweep
60 arrests ones from Cape Cod & The Islands

Taunton Police Chief Edward Walsh wasn't surprised last year when a state police unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office showed interest in a collaborative effort to target heroin and cocaine dealers within the Silver City...

Police Detective Peter Corr said he'd learned from state police that customers were coming into Taunton from as far away as New Hampshire, Vermont, Cape Cod and The Islands to buy heroin and crack cocaine at Fairfax Gardens... Taunton Gazette.

Cape's West stars the best
Its pitchers dominate in game at Fenway

For the second consecutive year, Fenway Park last night hosted the Cape Cod League All-Star Game, featuring some of the best amateur and collegiate players in the country. In past years the Cape League has been the pre-professional summer home for several recognizable major league players, including current Red Sox Kevin Youkilis, Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Bard, and Jason Varitek. It has produced Cy Youngs (Tim Lincecum), Rookies of the Year (Evan Longoria), and Gold Glovers (Mark Teixeira).

Each All-Star is hoping he can be the next Ryan Braun, Chase Utley, or Carlton Fisk, Cape League veterans all. So even with major league scouts scrutinizing their every move, the players did not allow that to keep them from having a little fun... Globe.

Don't think I'd pop the champagne yet, this is hardly akin to "for want of a nail..."

The only good thing about this Alliance loss is that it doesn't get 3 extra weeks to hire questionable accountants to manufacture dishonest financial analyses. With three extra weeks of sharpening their pencils, the Alliance could probably show how Cape Wind would, by itself, bankrupt the State. Give them 3 months, and they could probably show how it would bankrupt the country.

Why give them extra time? They wouldn't use it honestly.

Those who support mandates for wind energy are gambling with our economic future.

Forcing wind energy on the public at more than twice the cost will ruin our way of life, will not save any fuel, and will not affect Global Warming!

Three weeks to possibly save the state from bankruptcy seems like a good deal.

Save the state from bankruptcy? Wind farms are proven to stimulate local economy and create jobs. A quick search on YouTube turns up this video about what a wind farm did for the community of Cohoctan, ME: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VMIL24ojP0

I don't know. You be the judge.

The Cohocton wind farm is in NY? Here is a link with all the negative news from the neighbors.

I have seen it, kind of weird and wonderful but, I was glad i didn't live there. Living there under those monsters is not the same as visiting.

It is not in the ocean, Cape Wind is a private company.

We should own our wind power.

Nofreewind: You are very funny. You must have been a blast in gradeschool math class. And during the Red scare...

Just got out of the Mass High Tech Council Meeting. Participants include Nstar, Office of Energy, Many large energy consumers, etc. And here's the skinny:

Cape Wind could at most generate 3% of the power in the state. At ~20cents a KWh. Current power rates for business are at decade lows of anywhere from 8 to 14 cents. Consumers at around 14 cents. Average consumer electic bill projected to rise just about $1.25 per month. Double that if you want. Since most large businesses negotiate with multiple suppliers, the impact is negligible.

Your sky is falling, we're all going bankrupt, horsesh*t is as disingenuous as it is wrong. Go enjoy your unfettered view of the sound while it lasts and get ready for some new scenery.

I've dumbed this down as far as it can go for you. You can masturbate the numbers all you want, but you just can't impact the final result enough to be impactful. Sry. It's simple math.

If you are happy with the $1.25 per month increase to your bill, here is some more of my arithmetic for you to criticize.

We will need 24 more Cape Wind size farms to comply with Gov. Deval’s Green Communities Act. That will increase your bill by $31.25 per month.

At that rate, businesses will negotiate their way out of here.

OOPS! There go all the jobs!

How funny is that?

"We", that is the public, don't own any other power generation facilities. All of, or virtually all of, the gas, coal, oil and nuclear plants in the U.S. are private.

Why the need for a different approach for Wind?

freebags: They are already leaving. And it *is* in part due to expensive power, but way more because of the anti business regulatory and tax climate in our fair commonwealth.

On the power front, if you want to tilt at windmills (wink), how about going after leveling the playing field with other states? We in the north east don't have cheap coal/gas/hydro and as such have electic costs 10 cents higher than the rest of country.

A few bucks more for wind ain't gonna attract or repel anyone any more then this state already does.

That was the little joke/gotcha of the dearly departed Kerry Energy Crapola. Giving all the energy companies a pass while sticking it to industry (including "green") RIP

The unwinnable "War on Drugs" is an even greater farce than the resource wars in the mid-East posing as a "war on terror." The war on drugs has been waging for some 40 years now and, after billions of tax dollars down the drain, we're still losing.

Sure, every six months or so some local chief cop gets in the news about this latest "major" drug bust -a half million worth here a half million worth there. But what didn't make the news was the half-million shipment that slipped through last week, and the week before, and the week before that and . . . .

This latest bust, of course, will be reported to the feds so they can squander more of our tax money here in South Eastern Mass. to "fight" this "serious" drug problem.

Using the cops to correct a serious social and health problem like drug abuse is like asking Clarabell the Clown to run a drug rehab program. Honk! Honk!

dolphin,

At least Richard is one lawyer who is speaking out about the problems with drug IMPORTATION in this country. It starts there and follow the buck.

Think about the fewer cops, lawyers, judges, probation officers, drug rehabs, parole officers, JAILS, PRISONS--the country would go BUST. Come to think of it--it must be one of the few lucrative jobs left.

And think about all that you rely on--computers for instance. We can't seem to live without them. We do our shopping, our banking, our communications, job search, research news, look-up phone numbers, businesses, watch movies, play video games. Some don't ever leave their own house.

Latest conspiracy: Computer hackers. Who gets rich? The hacker if they are able to, the computer store when the owner needs repair. The computer store again if there is no warranty and the owner is forced to purchase a replacement. The IT service technician who the owner may have to rely upon if they are not educated enough on programming and how to avoid being hacked. Same with all we purchase--what lasts anymore? Hotwater heaters? Cars?

Those who support fossil fuel subsidy are gambling with our health & economic future.

I want to apologize to Martha Coakley for assuming that she was just continuing the delay of clean energy process that Teddy championed.

I was wrong about her in that respect. I like the concessions she was able to extract from Cape Wind.

I would also like to point out that I did praise her for her work on the Green Communities Act that calls for higher building standards (long overdue), a higher percentage of clean energy, & encourages towns to come up with their own plan to become independent.

Stalin would be proud. (that's a joke)

In reducing the starting price of electricity for year 2013 from 20.7 cents/kWh to 18.7 cents/kWh it certainly makes the financial blow a little less.

Good job again Martha.

nfw, can you please refrain form the 2-4 times more expensive tripe that you have acknowledged AND denied having said on this site.

IT DOESN'T WASH. Not last year, not this year, certainly not in the future.

Is everyone else as tired of this lie as I am?
