Bigs and Littles Enjoy Haunted House at Barnstable High School

Haunted HouseOn October 26th, Big Brothers Big Sisters took a “field trip” to Barnstable High School’s Haunted House. With its creative scenery and realistic costumes, this was more than a Halloween treat.

This year’s theme had something to do with pirates…you’ll have to check it out for yourself to learn more! Several of our Bigs and Littles joined us as we got ready for Halloween with BHS!! Thanks again to John Sullivan who made it possible for us to enjoy the Haunted House free of charge!!

Oyster Festival Fun with Big Brothers Big Sisters

BBBS in Wellfleet October 14th and 15th 2006

This year’s Wellfleet Oyster Festival celebrated more than just Oysters. The Festival also highlighted community service and spirit and gave Big Brothers Big Sisters a chance to be a part of the fun!

Outer Cape Program Director Kathy Reilly organized a Big Brothers Big Sisters recruitment table on Saturday October 14th with the help of Big Sister Paula Brady. Bigs Romni and Sain-r Edwards, as well as Jordan Bunting and Shacara Edwards helped Kathy on Sunday the 15th.
The purpose of the table was to gain exposure for the program and to recruit potential volunteer Big Brothers and Sisters. However, with Kathy’s clever Oyster craft…the table attracted more than that!

Children and adults of all ages’ creativity were sparked by Kathy’s Oyster necklaces. The craft was made by taking an Oyster shell and pulling a string through a hole Kathy had already drilled. The next step was to attach googly eyes and to use the felt we provided to make a “face” on the shell. Participants demonstrated superb creativity with their craft and soon enough, over 150 people were walking around the festival wearing their Big Brother Big Sister Oyster shell necklaces!

(Finished Product! A Connecticut family shows their  "witch" and "Santa" Oyster crafts!)

Event to support awareness of Big Brothers Big Sisters

Event to Support Awareness of Big Brothers Big Sisters

Board, staff and friends of BBBS joined more than 70 Hyannisport Club members at their beautiful venue on Friday, July 28 for an evening filled with touching stories from some of our Bigs and Littles, as well as information about how our agency continues to satisfy such a needed void for children in-need living in our communities.

The highlight of our friend-raiser involved hearing testimonials from Big Sister Paula Hersey and Big Brother Brian Morrision with their Littles, Megan Spicer and Victor Mason.

The following photos are proof that a great evening was enjoyed by all!

Big Brothers Big Sisters at Barnstable County Fair

Michael Tritto, Development Committee Chair, Tammy Barboza, Development Director, and Mike Herlihy, Board MemberWhat a Weekend!

Michael Tritto, Development Committee Chair, Tammy Barboza, Director of Development, and Mike Herlihy were just a few of the volunteers that showed their support of Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Barnstable County Fair Community Table this past weekend.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters table attracted a lot of attention from kids and parents alike. Our volunteers were there to answer questions about the program and took the opportunity to educate the public about the programs we offer.

The Community Tent is located at the West entrance at the Fair and houses several organizations that support various local  interests. This was the perfect place for Big Brothers Big Sisters to display information and answer questions.  If you missed us at the Fair, please feel free to call Nika Martin at the Centerville office (508)771-5150 ex. 104.

The other was purchased by Crane Appliance and was painted by Peggy Zablotny.  We are sharing this whale, displayed at 529 State Road, with the Boys and Girls Club.

One Successful Event!

All the ingredients for a successful fundraiser were present at our annual Golf Fore Kids fundraiser on June 12 at Pocasset Golf Club.  A whopping (27) foursomes – our largest golf crowd ever - took time out of their hectic lives to take part and support our Big Brothers Big Sisters agency. Photo right: Board member Bill Breisky and Golf Committee member, Bo Dandison, help with the morning setup.

In addition to the generosity of our players, volunteers, and corporate and individual sponsors, we extend our thanks to those auction and raffle donors that allowed us to offer items ranging from a 2-night stay at Summer House Bed and Breakfast in Edgartown to golf outings at Cummaquid, Hyannisport, Kings Way and Pocasset Golf Clubs.  Other items on-hand included sought-after sports memorabilia, such as a baseball autographed by Curt Schilling, a football signed by Tedi Bruschi and a 2005 British Open flag autographed by Tiger Woods.

Photo left: Golf Co-Chair and Board Treasurer Rick Coville presenting first place prizes to Tournament Winner and sponsor, Spinal Technology, Inc.

In an effort to provide our participants with state-of-the-art benefits, each golfer had his/her swing videotaped that can now be privately viewed on-line, as well as the ability to compare it with swings by golf pros Tiger Woods and Vijay Sigh – even Donald Trump and Joe Pesci!

Hole in One Winner!

Golf Fore Kids is one of our largest and most successful fundraisers of the year.  We thank those who have been supportive of it and welcome those who wish to contribute toward next year’s.  If interested, please contact Tammy Barboza at 508.771.5150 x105.
