Lawyers, Guns and Money

What happens when the district attorney's home is burglarized?

okeefe190_203_01Cape Cod is about to find out, because Michael O'Keefe's home has been hit twice in recent weeks, and among the items taken were several guns.

No one in authority could immediately be reached for a comment, not O'Keefe, nor Sandwich Police Chief Michael Miller, nor the head of security for the gated community in which O'Keefe has his home, the Ridge Club in Sandwich.

The security guard is also a police officer in Sandwich.

According to a longtime resident of the tony golf club, whose internationally famous residents include golfer Jane Blaylock and retired hockey bad-boy Derek Sanderson, O'Keefe's home was the site of separate break-ins days apart. It is unknown at this point whether the burglars were looking for something specific, and had to return to get it, or if they just decided that since they didn't get caught the first time, they'd do it again.

O'Keefe bought the course-front home a few years ago when he moved out of his house on Palamino Drive in Barnstable (a few doors away from the doctor who killed her husband in April, and received a clean bill of criminal health in August, with O'Keefe's grand jury determining that it was self-defense, because the deceased had thrown a tape measure at her and threatened her with further abuse). The home has undergone an estimated $100,000 in renovations since he moved in.

A rough few months for the gravel-voiced top-dog lawman

It has been a rough few months for the gravel-voiced top dog in Cape and Islands law enforcement, low-lighted by a Page 1 story in the Boston Herald that itemized his long ride on the campaign Gravy Train, which is the practice of using a campaign credit card for all sorts of seemingly unrelated political expenses, such as golf in Hawaii, meals in Naples, Florida, golf clubs, Bloomingdale's, and regular meals at Grill 16 in Barnstable, the eatery that Sanderson owned until it closed last summer.

Among the blemishes, O'Keefe has been forced to defend his office against charges of harassment, in Provincetown; favoritism, in the former doctor's "self-defense;" heavy-handedness, in the prosecution of a Barnstable cop whose car was hit by kids shooting paint guns; racism, in the prosecution of Christopher McGowen and not his white cohort; and arrogance, in choosing to ignore the public clamor for an explanation or at least an apology for his comments in a book about the Christa Worthington murder, in which O'Keefe questioned the slain fashion writer's abilities as a mother and homemaker, and more or less called her a slut.

It could not be learned whether the guns were reported stolen, but, by law, stolen guns must be reported, so presumably there must be a report, somewhere.

If you rob a house that has a gun collection, and you get away with the guns instead of getting shot.... well, while you can't actually admire the act... you can understand how the act would be viewed as impressive in certain circles.

good one, smitty, thanks for the tip...DA or ADA? i mean, there is only one former DA (for the Cape and Islands) the late Phil Rollins so that would narrow the field to the point of naming him...as for former ADA's, it's a wide open field...meanwhile, would you say that telling security is enough if security also represents the sandwich PD, or would you say that the homeowner has an obligation to public safety (and the law) to report this to the police department itself? if they were taken by guys doing work on his house and getting paid by a third party, strictly hypothetically, that would make the reporting a little more troublesome...which is the beauty of lawn enforcement on Cape Cod; who is guarding the guards? no one is guarding the guards. no one in all of america is watching over any of this, because here the law is the law, and there is no such thing as an internal affairs unit -- they are all internal affairs...

Have they dusted for prints or is the scene of the crime contaminated, like they claimed Christa's house was? Do they have any suspects? Who is in charge, by the way? Martha? Can she pry herself away from sueing the glue factory long enough to investigate this guy who is suppose to be working as a DA....guess not...a real hot potato, obviously. No one wants to get their political hands dirty on this one. Good point about "the guards guarding the guards"....this is why there has been a problem for so long. And yes, it's everywhere, but unfortunately, Cape Cod is a microcosym and I think it's worse than anywhere else in Mass. mainly because of the height of arrogance by the DA and his rogues--and the level of discrimination that does exist on that island. The all inclusive group that allows no outsiders in--now we all know why.

DA gets a discount home in a gated community, gets some free renovation work and then has his guns stolen by someone who can't get in trouble because the security firm and the police department are both controlled by the "victim," the DA himself...it's just, just...breathtaking...

Give us a break. No, I think that hair is the real thing....maybe it's a reaction to stress...the photo of him and Mason on another blog (about the kayak drowning)was pretty bad too,...he needs to find a new barber...among other things. Keep the stories coming, Jeff. Job well done, as always. Nice to see someone else telling it like it is. Don't forget how he shared pretrial evidence with that writer during the McCowen trial. Don't DA's get disciplinary action if they cross the line? Again, were is Martha in all this? There is a higher power that is suppose to oversee DA's isn't there? Cape Cod may be an island, but it's still attached to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, last I checked.

10/17/07 @ 12:33 pm
crusader [Member] writes:
Jeff,

correction: DA shared pretrial evidence & photo's --4 years before trial, plenty of time to create all kinds of problems. Where do I begin?

TA--portrayed as major suspect, everyone learns confidential information regarding the crime scene, location of stab wound, etc.,DA's opinion of the victim shared with the writer (I think MF had her own reasons for bashing the victim) when he was suppose to be looking for her killer, instead he states his macho-derogatory insults about a woman who was brutally killed. Those comments clearly showed what this guy is made of--once a rogue cop, always a rogue cop. His followers do the same. Disrespecting a victim as DA is inexcusable. BG didn't have to say one word about CW's personal life, the DA & writer sealed it. So, it's similar to your story about the 11 women murdered, who cares, right? That is what they planned. It didn't just happen. You portray a victim less worthy, this is the outcome, & the black trashman who was her new lover that no one could accept. That is the real story no one wants to hear.
10/17/07 @ 12:38 pm
wolfram [Member] writes:
Okay, crusader, we've heard your "the trashman is innocent" diatribe ad nauseam. Enough. Commenting about it over and over on unrelated blogs ain't gonna set the guilty guy free.
10/17/07 @ 12:48 pm
crusader [Member] writes:
This is not "unrelated", we are talking about the DA & his reputation--not looking too good, heard from Michael Sullivan who said, "MO is professionally challenged"...well there ya' go, what more do you need to hear. It's obvious no matter what this DA does he will always have a brood on CC who will defend him.

Chris McCowen had no motive to kill Christa W. I believe they were lovers for some time, this was a crime of passion. The DA stated that & was quoted by the writer. The knife wielding suspect has been let off the hook because of connections, that was painfully obvious to those of us who sat & watched this corrupt trial sentence an innocent man to life in prison without chance of parole. You tell me why a former firefighter who shoots a man in a parking lot is acquitted! There is no justice on Cape Cod for those who are vulnerable to a bunch of arrogant rogues--CM was in the wrong place at the wrong time, he was the perfect patsy, all they had to do was wait it out. I hope BG gets his chance to show CC what justice really is about.
10/17/07 @ 12:48 pm
Jeff [Member] writes:
wolfram, as for guilty until...I'm sure you can appreciate the inner beauty of this story, that it's not in the first instance a reflection of O'Keefe's guilt (that only comes later when he buries the report and is said to own guns with no numbers, thus presumably also with no registrations). no, in the first instance he is the victim, so it's really not presumptuous at all to report the story that he has been victimized; it only turns into an indictment of the man once you realize why he didn't report the theft, or, if he did report it, why it never saw the light of day...why he won't talk about it, why the SPD chief won't talk about it, why the security guy won't talk about it...don't you see Wolfram? If it hadn't happened, there's four people who know it did who have not bothered to deny it...dr. ex all over again

I think he believes CM is truly innocent & that is why he took on the case. But he probably knows he screwed up. First, he should have never trusted the DA would play fair; next blunder was not putting those 10 witnesses on the stand. "lives ruined".....too bad, they made their beds now it's time to lose more sleep on it. What about the other lives ruined? BG also said that CC could never handle a second trial--no kidding. The chamber of commerce can't handle the lack of revenue once the visitors learn about the crap that goes on--it's has crime, corruption & cover-up like everywhere else in America. Only difference is the beaches hide all the scum that would otherwise show in daylight. And those seeking profits over a dead woman, that's one of the saddest aspects of this tragic story. BG is one of the best lawyers around, everyone makes mistakes.

Did you hear about what's been going on in New Jersey? 100's of officials are being indicted and convicted on corruption, bribery, obstruction of justice, etc. I'll bet the old bag of tricks here on Cape Cod is just as bad. For all you disbeliever's, suppose a selectman had "lost" $10,000 of town money, and then pleaded the 5th-meaning to speak would be to criminally indict himself. Would you all be so cavalier then? Suppose you knew without a shadow of a doubt that someone had been framed to further the political and proffesional career/s of public officials? Would you just accept it? Cause, all the "players" in that Worthington case have had their lives up-graded after that sham of justice. Welsh is now a judge (god forbid), lying trooper Mason (my opinion) is now sargeant, and Nickerson still collects his huge salary with pension and benefits. ALL after taking part in a frame-up and rail-roading of an innocent person. (My opinion)
Cause i have a strong hunch that "missing" money was used to "fix" this case. And before you say Prove it-why don't they prove they didn't?

I hear that PM's book is due out in Feb. 08'..I don't like to see more profits made off a dead woman who had her life strip away at the young age of 46, but maybe he will shed more truth to what really happened to Christa because that other writer certainly did just the opposite, for her own gains. Some people should know their boundaries when they write about true crime. I'd say she did more damage than good with that book...you wanna talk about lives ruined, ask the people she wrote about...& how she slanted her story to suit her own purpose. I hope the truth comes out about who she really is & her role in this because it was not a story about Christa as much as it was about her jealousy. Too bad the other female writer from the Cape didn't get the chance to write that book, maybe we would have seen a different outcome. Don't think towels would be involved.

There's more corruption than you know, not just within the justice system down there. So you have but one choice, become part of the scum or quit. In the end, I took the high road leaving all behind.

I'm reminded of the CTV black female lawyer, who said, "why can't the people of CC accept that maybe she (CW) was seeing the black trashman? Have you seen some of these trashmen...they are buff...so why is it hard to accept"....we know the answer, Jeff. Lilly White WASPY whaling community ain't having that, & her cousins...more stone throwers..."my cousin wasn't too discriminate about her men"..please. CW made bad choices, I'll say that much, but who are they to talk, as far as CM goes, the only baggage there was what was hauled away on trash day. Your comment is rooted in racism, not the circumstances of the crime. Some didn't like CW sleeping with the blackman, got rid of both- for the same reasons--they knew too much? That came from Mason--about the boots, not CM. He cried because he was going to jail you fool--JF pinned it on him. Why no taped interview, eh? Something to hide? The cops COULD have taped him, but CHOSE NOT TO. So we are all to believe this was just a series of blunders--DON'T THINK SO. Smart enough to cover this up, made it look like something it's not.

CM had a way with the ladies, at least they were both SINGLE! Maybe the white CC men can't handle the fact that a white woman, educated, wealthy, & desirable would sleep with a trashman. Well, I would wager to say it goes on more than you are willing to believe! Narrowmindedness should be banned. There is a free society beyond your world of dancing fiddler crabs & clam bakes. Was a claim made to the insurance co. for the stolen guns? Did these guns have serial numbers? Unregistered? Why not a report filed? Many who wear more than one hat, they like to cover all the bases. The security guard is also a Sandwich cop? Why am I not surprised. Is that like the Truro cop who is also a lobster scrubber? Or the cousin of CW-screenwriter who lied to HBO-Truro PD dispatcher & EMT & is also a selectwoman. Conflict of interest? Especially when chief was in the hotseat? And works for OCHS along with uncle who is on BOD. Why hire anyone else, when just a few self-elected can run the entire island?

If the guns were unregistered, lacking documentation, missing numbers, what were they used for? Were they taken off suspects & made into a private collection? You say that he had renovations he didn't pay for--maybe some bartering or bullying? So how does a story like this get squashed? It happened on Cape Cod, like all the rest of the stories that get buried in the migrating sand dunes only to be exposed, someday, maybe.

I suggest next time you have nothing better to do, which is probably tomorrow, go spend some time at Barnstable Probate & District Courts off Cape, too. There are abused men in these stories too--some women like to retaliate for whatever reasons; new lover, money, revenge, etc. A local judge made a fatal error which cost a woman & her unborn child (8 mos. preg.)her life--he did not grant her a RO against her abusive husband who ran her down with his car. That judge was dragged through the media for months. I'm certain he had since granted orders to all women who entered his courtroom seeking an RO, after his mistake, but who knew. I believe that if someone wants to kill someone bad enough, nothing will stop them. We heard by several people that CM's girlfriend's used the RO's to gain financial support from the state. Does his rap sheet list assaults, weapons? No, it lists B&E's in FL. Can't say the same about other's rap sheet can you? Bilbo's party, the tourist held at knife point--bells should be ringing by now, more like sirens.

The injustice doesn't stop here until something is done at the top. Career advancement, based on number/type of convictions, not who is guilty and who is innocent. Until you see the bigger picture, you can't understand the magnitude of this atrocity. Some of this is due to a place of disconnection; lack of services, unemployment, alcoholism & drug addiction. That's the beginning of the slippery slope. Maybe if they can fix that, the rest can be repaired.

And shhhhh, keep this quiet, but SHE asked for the tree to be removed, didn't she? She knew it would be CM coming to remove it, didn't she? It was on record that he went there to remove it. Yet, the tree was never removed. Now, geee, what do you think they did instead? Maybe had sex like he said. And Maybe that was the end of his involvement with her.
And maybe this whole thing was such an easy fix that the "defenders of justice" (ha!) couldn't resist. And look, now Welsh is a judge and Mason a Sargeant. How nice. That's how you move up the ladder in the system of just-us. Now they both get the cushy pensions and overtime, and access to all the frigging drugs they could ever imagine. Other people who know him say he's incapable of this crime-TRUE. DNA is not the BE ALL. It prove sex-not murder. All evidence should have been examined & WAS NOT. Why? More blunders? Don't buy it. Why is it not believable that CW could take a walk on the wild side like daddy-o?

Like a friend of mine who lives in close proximity to CW's home said, "when they test the Truro PD, I'll consider getting tested". I don't care what the MSP or local PD had to say, BG caught them in lies more than once on the stand along with the person of interest, who claimed, "MSP told me what to say"....as far as the Oz show, I don't relish the fact there are people in prison, so I wouldn't watch it...I'm talking about the Oz in your own backyard with all those evil monkeys you allow to break the law and there lack of accountability due to connections to the force....Dorothy may be naive, but she knew enough to look behind the curtain and exposed the wizard and his deception.

And you could hear the kind of manipulating and twisting of words that the cop was doing. They are trained in this, as they are trained to lie on the stand. Why is everyone ok with that? The many people she slept with, the black boot print, the car at her house on saturday...who was that, and why were they there??? The fact that Frazier and Mulvey were "allegedly" overheard making up their alibi's, Frazier, drunk and "allegedly" saying he got away with murder.....and still this is not enough for reasonable doubt? Did she owe money to a drug dealer or just have the dirt on those involved....and while we are on the subject of hot tubs, drug addictions, and promiscuous behavior....where did it all begin for Christa...as she ventured into the dark vortex....promiscuous girls or promiscuous boys....some videos that remind us of the Cape Cod underground that few wish to learn....

They want to build casinos....how about some rehabs for the Cape....I think they could use a few.....maybe there will be fewer crimes, deaths, and corruption....and less dubious characters weilding knives at tourists....does the DA care about cleaning up the Cape Cod drug problems? NO, NO, NO....
