Troublesome Questions Haunt DA in Case of Killer/Doctor
As many as four  or more shots may have been fired into the victim

By Jeff Blanchard

daokeefe98_153What he (the DA) failed to mention, and still has yet to discuss, is how many times Gryboski shot her husband, Patrick Lancaster...When the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office announced in August there would be no prosecution of Dr. Ann Gryboski in the self-confessed shooting death of her husband on Easter Sunday 2007, top prosecutor Michael O’Keefe said, "This is a finding by the Grand Jury consistent with the evidence in this particular case."

What he failed to mention, and still has yet to discuss, is how many times Gryboski shot her husband, Patrick Lancaster. Nowhere has it been written or discussed in public the exact number of times Dr. Gryboski fired her gun, how many shots hit their target, or even exactly how many people fired shots.

In search of those answers, I spoke this morning with three people in the office of the state Medical Examiner, an executive assistant who said all questions need to go through another state agency; the medical examiner on the case, Dr. Faryl Sandler, who said she is not allowed to communicate with reporters; and the chief medical examiner himself, who said the information being sought is not available through his office, but rather through police records or the prosecutor himself.

DA's failure to address the suggestion that he and Dr. Gryboski have known each other for years.O'Keefe was personally acquainted with the killer
From the beginning, and still to this day, the local police have referred all inquiries to the district attorney, who himself has been tangled up in the case by dint of his failure to address the suggestion that he and Dr. Gryboski have known each other for years.

For O’Keefe’s part, he had said he would divulge the nature of that relationship once the grand jury spoke, but then reneged on the pledge by refusing to answer any questions on the now-closed case, instead pointing to his press release as the final word on the matter.

Here, then, is the relevant passage as quoted directly from the DA’s press release (with the entire text available on his website):

"She fired once, he continued to advance, she fired again, striking him twice in the torso.""As the [unnamed] son began to back into the kitchen, Dr. Gryboski took her gun from her purse which was on the floor. She told her husband to stop. He taunted her and began to move toward her saying, ‘You're so dead, you don't know what you started.’ She fired once, he continued to advance, she fired again, striking him twice in the torso."

What’s it matter how many times she shot him? I suppose, for anyone who subscribes to the theory that Lancaster was abusive and deserved to die, it doesn’t matter at all. But then why not say it was once, twice, three times...or more? Why write around it?

There is one piece of paper, which we obtained yesterday, that does reflect the public record and at the same time fails to answer the questions regarding how many shooters and how many shots.

At line No. 34 on the death certificate filed on April 13 in Barnstable Town Hall, in the space for MANNER OF DEATH, the box checked was Homicide, as opposed to Natural, Accident, Suicide, Could Not Be Determined, or Pending Investigation.

Boom... boom... boom... BOOM !
At line 35d, DESCRIBE HOW INJURY OCCURRED, Medical Examiner Dr. Faryl Sandler typed in, "Shot By Other(s).

In the space marked CAUSE OF DEATH, Dr. Sandler wrote: "Gunshot Wounds To The Torso With Perforation Of Lung[,] Liver, Diaphragm And Illiac [sic] Artery."

I asked her this morning if that meant four shots, four holes, four wounds, and the doctor stuck to her no-comment position, saying she is not allowed to speak with reporters about any case.

Thus, even if we buy into the official narrative – as crafted by O’Keefe and Gryboski, along with her attorney Kevin Reddington -- what remains unanswered, then, is how many people fired the gun, how many shots were fired, and how many of the bullets hit Lancaster.

gryboski100_100_01O’Keefe had a pre-existing relationship with the doctor, his former neighbor.According to every single person contacted for the story, including Reddington, the Barnstable police and the three officials of the state medical examiner’s office, the only person who can speak on the record here is O’Keefe himself, who has steadfastly refused comment ever since the rumor surfaced that O’Keefe had a pre-existing relationship with the doctor, his former neighbor.

As incendiary as that aspect of the Lancaster shooting may be, the fires of public curiosity have been fanned in many directions, post-mortem.

  • First, O’Keefe immediately held a press conference in which he announced the shooting could be excused as the result of mitigating circumstances.
  • Second, several residents of the neighborhood around Coach Lane in Barnstable where Gryboski continues to live complained to this reporter that they had not been interviewed by police or asked to appear before the grand jury despite having reached out to police to share their stories as long-time witnesses of the Gryboski-Lancaster family dynamic.
  • Third, O’Keefe has dodged all attempts to address the suggestion that he and the doctor were friends, in which case the probe should have been handled by another office, as with the Worthington murder investigation in which O’Keefe’s intemperate, pre-trial remarks to an author with a book contract led to a temporary power-sharing agreement with the Plymouth County district attorney’s office, as Barnstable County’s quasi-Hall Monitor.

Meanwhile, the doctor/shooter volunteered her license to practice, asked for it back and has yet to receive a green light from the state, or even a date for a hearing.

Cape Cod where you can’t tell the good guys from the bad
Which brings us to today, just another day on Cape Cod, another day in which you can’t tell the good guys from the bad because the good guys keep making it so easy to confuse the two.

One man is dead from an unknown number of bullets and unknown number of shooters. His son remains free and completely anonymous as a matter of public record. His widow remains free and completely unable to practice medicine. And the man who holds the key to understanding how all this came to pass is in no position to comment, because there is nothing he can say that will do him any good.

Well now....sounds like a familiar response doesn't it? Censorship reigns once again for the DA. Another case sealed perhaps? Just like John Reine's confession.

More of that "suppression of evidence"? How history does repeat itself over and over again within this DA's office. The pattern is crystal clear. So the ME checked off "Homicide" as cause of death, that's interesting. And if you connect the dots via human anatomy it appears that lung, liver, diaphram & illiac artery could have been ruptured by more than two bullets.

Guess this is just another cold case file, Jeff. They sure are stacking up.

"He was a clamdigger married to a doctor, who had no respect for her."--

Yes! True, but there is a thing called JUSTICE & DUE PROCESS of the LAW-- is quite obvious, the doc got to skate from all of it courtesy of your DA.

"And McGowen is a big, sweet blubbering BBB in prison."--that is a racist remark. You are proving our point of the Cape being mostly "lily white" & within some of your branches of Law Enforcement.

"Examine the DAs office budget, how many cases they have to try every year, with not enough resources."--Maybe he could donate some of his campaign money instead of lavishing his donors with expensive lunches & golf memorabilia! That is the lamest excust of them all! Cut back on the 90k + they pay LE.

Some people need killing, and sometimes it takes more than one bullet.

Sometimes the person doing the needed killing is one of bitter's sainted working class women, and sometimes it's a physician.

People who are DA's have at least a law degree and are usually smart, ambitious, and hardworking, and tend to rub shoulders with movers and shakers in the community, not with quahoggers.

Not out of snobbery, but this is just a reality. Professionals tend to fraternize with professionals.

Where others see a conspiracy, I see reality: a woman defending herself against a total and complete monster, and a DA who happened to be acquainted with her socially not pressing charges.

The world is a better place for his having been removed from it. Someone was going to to die--him or her. I'm glad it was him and not her.

Were you really a victim of domestic violence and rape? Why should we take your word for it? What's your husbands side of the story? Maybe it was consensual? Maybe your story is just a coverup for some cop you were having an affair with? Was there a dark pickup truck seen leaving your driveway? Did LE overlook some evidence when investigating your claim? Did you try to get away? Why would you have stayed with this guy if you knew he was capable of the violence? Was he charged with rape? Was he having a fling with an assistant DA so charges were never brought forward?

Just thought I'd ask the type of questions you'd ask of a victim.

But unfortunatwly for him and his family, the DA knows the Doctor personally, and so this man will get no justice for him and his family....

Thr Grand Jury liked the Doctor because of the favorable witnesses who came forward to defend her. Sorry, that is not "fact" of anything,it is "opinion".
Just as the "fact" that McCowen had sex with CM was no "proof" of anything other than that. It was the jury's "opinion" that he raped and murdered her.

The Grand Jury didn't know this woman's alleged past, & friendship with the DA. Why didn't the police interview her neighbors? That's what good police work is all about. Getting to the truth, allowing witnesses to come forward. Not the case when it comes to the DA. He gets to do whatever he wants, answers to no one. Like the Boston lawyer said, "that DA's office convict the innocent who are not from local families or who have $$$ to bail themselves out of a jam".....was he ever right! And the DA never heard of FREEDOM OF SPEECH either...since the journalists of the Cape, except for Jeff & Marilyn Miller (although Truro never let her get too far) the rest are not allowed to print the truth, just the DA's version, that is if you can even get the guy to talk.

Organized crime has infiltrated your wonderful branches of law enforcement.

All one has to do is read "Brothers Bulger" to know this is a fact.

Why not take it like a dog & deal with it.

Innocent people are put in jail, so friends of law enforcement & organized crime can get away.

That is the simple truth, nothing complicated about it. What is complicated is living with the fact that you can't even trust law enforcement anymore.

Christa's death was a "hit", in my opinion. The why's & who's may never surface because of political reasons & who she was--a blueblood who slept with a black trashman. The island can't ever admit that.

Some of the people involved in this case who were brought up by the defense attorney, those working for the moving company were connected to organized crime.

There it is, now go find the killers & bring them to justice.

Christa will never be at peace until that day arrives.

You all go live with what happened to her on your island. That fact will never go away. If this had a Boston connection, it also had one on the Cape.

During the case, we find out that CM became a drug informant for the Wellfleet officer who was assigned to the Drug Task Force. So, why would CM leave if he was a drug informant? This is probably how the set up began. He was arrested, then turned into an informant to avoid jail time since he was on probation. He was cooperating with the police who he believed he could trust. That was his first mistake. IMO

Looking back, this case has been riddled with series of events leading to nothing but chaos and confusion. It's what we have learned that make us think about what we haven't learned.

This murder only spells one thing--COVER UP.

And I still believe that some didn't like the fact that CM was sleeping with a blueblood, or other white women during his trash runs. Small towns--territorial & closed communities.

There are people on another site who actually say "It is not possible that she would sleep with him, just not possible." "Are you saying she would not shower after sleeping with a garbage man? Icky." "A woman with her standing would not sleep with a black garbage man." etc., etc.
As if they would know!
How do they know?
One person even called Chris a "loathsome creature." Loathsome creature....who talks like that?
It's unbelievable, and disturbing as hell too.
The only other time I've seen an attitude like that was a long time ago in Tennessee...makes me think of that statement of the Wellfleet police officer...worse than down South.
I feel like I'm living in a time warp...and no-one see's anything wrong!

Just like the tradesmen don't sleep with the lonely second-home wife of Truro who vacations while hubby is away on business or screwing his 20+ something while he dumps the kids & "not so fresh" wife on the bluffs. But those stories you won't hear because some of the locals are doing it & cops, too. But when CM becomes "a man in motion" by the white sophisticated women who decide they want to take a walk on the wild side then it's, "oh! never!...not a black trashman", but a white painter, carpenter, fisherman, cop......so what is the difference if we are talking about class? NO, it's race they are talking about, but yet they won't admit it because that would define who they really are--LILLY WHITE racist sh*theads....the better than thou crowd who sit in the first row of the holy church for hypocrites only....please, no one is buying their bull anymore & it shows from what is going on down there. crusader,

I have no sympathy for the guys that killed the dog. According to the newspaper, at least one of them will be serving time. They were tried by a jury and by a very competent judge who, many years ago was the wife of the current DA. She was an assistant DA for many years before becoming a judge. From what I know, she is highly regarded. Do you have information that she may have swayed the jury or given the men a lesser sentence because she was once married to the DA? Also, the suspects in the case did present a defense. Their claim was that the dogs were vicious and had attacked them, one of their mothers and dogs in the neighborhood. Does that make it right what they had done? Maybe not, but it does create a motive for the jury to think about. Unlike you, who just assume that it's one great big cover-up.

When the convicted murder CM "laid the boot to her" and she "took a walk on the wild side", did he have sex with her in the hallway where she just happened to be found DEAD? She still had the black trashman's DNA on her breast.

crusader [Member] writes:
Buzz,

She had sex with him on Thurs., just the day prior. Sometimes people don't shower everyday, it can happen, especially when you are chasing an active toddler around.

The point IS--there are at least two witnesses that can be connected to the MOB in this story--one is DM and the other is JH--both of SOMERVILLE! And you know what? I get to talk about it because I live in the town--just like you and others who don't like it when I talk about the Cape--but the difference is I don't care what you say about Somerville. It has its history of criminals--so does the Cape!

I hate to clue you in, but the black trash man was set up for the murder of Christa Worthington and a cop who was in charge of evidence in Truro also got to skip out on court the last day before deliberations! This guy was one of her last boyfriend's who also didn't have to submit his DNA! But that's okay...because we all know who wears BLACK BOOTS--it's the cops!

Why would a guy from Wellfleet who has lived there his whole life say, "it was the cops, & they trashed her place afterwards."

This story is sick--cruelty to animals to an extreme.

That is what Mason's report says.

So, if it's so true, then what are we arguing for?
Go arrest Frazier for murder!

Ps; Her body was found that way...we don't know how it got there....seems rather strange that with a 200 pd man, you would have sex in such an uncomfortable manner. (thanks groovy!)
An hold on, didn't Mason say that they had sex in the living room? Or were they in another room while Frazier was busy going through her stuff?
Or was it on the stairway that they had sex?
Pretty wild, for a woman who would never have sex with him in the first place.

BG stated an ex-con named David Murphy of Somerville who also worked for MMovers w/Jeremy Frazier, both shared a cell phone that was traced to SYMSP on the night in question 12 midnight--25 calls made, his pager going off--so what was that? Just a friendly midnight chat? No, I think it was, a "checkin" call--"we got the job done"....in my opinion. Maybe they drugged her, beat her up to look like a robbery...many layers to throw PI's off the scent of the trail. There is another key player, also connected to MMovers who BG mentioned at trial, he's connected to Winter Hill Gang of yester-year--you remember don't you buzz? You use to bring it up all the time!

David Murphy was convicted of murder (decapitation/severing hands of a young man 21yr.old) along w/someone else, at the Holiday Inn, Charlestown/Som. line, a known mob hang out, served 10 yrs, got out six months before Christa's death.

It's also a coincidence that Shirley Reine's murder was noted by law enforcement as a "professional hit". Her step son just happened to visit an ex-con murderer, in jail, again just days within her murder. They were seen at the 99 in Falmouth. Go read, "Murder she wrought" by Michele McPhee. I see a patern in the way these women were both killed. They don't have the balls to kill these women themselves, so they hire ex-cons killers to do it? Now the last step is connecting the BIG DOTS too the little dots. This murder was intentially multi-layered so that no one could find the real killers. Maybe the Cape element only covered it up. But I don't think so. Christa beat them at their own game, she was leaving town, someone made sure she didn't make it out the door. Time to take those blinders off--face it. Law enforcement, all the way up the chain covered up this crime, in my opinion. Either JF & DM did this, or just layed the groundwork for the real killer. There is probably one hellofa good reason her family was happy to see the black garbage man sent away & some locals.

BG knows the world of LE inside & out seeing many were/are his clients, so are members of organized crime. He is lawyer. He defends who he wants, maybe he has he own reasons for taking this case. He believes CM is innocent. Maybe somebody wants the real murderers to fry.

The cop said, "they needed to contain the drug trafficking & her murder opened up a can of worms."

Questions by HYANNIS NEWS- Lancaster

A local man is dead and Hyannis News has some questions (some of these are purposely in random order):

What actually caused the bruising to Ann Gryboski’s lip and eye? The defense paints one picture, but is it an accurate one?

Is the defendant, who is charged with murder, telling the truth about what drove her to pull the trigger last Easter Sunday? Did her statements change during the investigation?

Does Gryboski have a motive to not tell the truth?

Is Gryboski being treated for mental illness, depression, anxiety, or any other illness that may shed new light on her actions? Was Lancaster being treated for any illness that may shed light on his actions, whatever those actions may have been?

Why did Gryboski shoot her husband of almost thirty years? Was it the result of “self-defense,” “battered woman syndrome,” or was it premeditated murder... was the killing something Gryboski had been waiting to do for quite a while? Did she find last Easter Sunday to be an opportunity to settle a bad marriage once and for all?

Why did Gryboski have a license to carry guns? She told police one thing, but has anyone heard her make remarks about her using the license to obtain a weapon to protect herself from a specific threat?

Has anyone ever heard Gryboski talk about how she may have wanted Lancaster dead?

Has anyone ever heard Lancaster's son say he wanted his father killed?

Did Gryboski, a physician, have prior knowledge of the so-called “Battered Woman Syndrome” defense? Had she ever talked about that subject with any of her friends or patients?

What type of websites did Gryboski frequent?

Gryboski is a Doctor and mandated reporter; she knows the laws and resources available to domestic violence victims, why didn’t she call the police about her husband’s alleged abuse? If Lancaster was abusive to their sons, why didn’t she call the police for their sake? Did Gryboski ever report suspected abuse in her capacity as a physician? Was Gryboski ever abusive?

Has the son ever been abusive? Had he ever struck anyone in the face? Where was/ is the mother of the toddler?

Why did Gryboski wait to call 911 until after she fatally shot Lancaster?

How long had Lancaster’s body been dead on the living room floor prior to the arrival of police? What time was Lancaster actually shot? Are the shots from the same person holding the same weapon?

Did Gryboski ever consider divorcing her husband? Was Lancaster talking about divorcing her? The boys are both grown men in their twenties, why wasn’t divorce an option instead of killing? Who made more money? Who may have benefited financially from a divorce? How much was Gryboski worth? How much was Lancaster worth? Are there mitigating circumstances that would cause a divorce to be a particularly messy one in this case?
