Occupy Sagamore Ongoing [Nor'easter Blues]

Ridiculous Traffic Basically Closes Town

Sunday drivers should go to great lengths to avoid the Sagamore area today, as ongoing bridge repairs have snarled trafic in all directions.

Yes, I just wrote about this Friday. It's just as bad today. Here are a few of my highlights:

- Left Sandwich (around the Heritage Theater) at 12 PM... I made it to Sagamore (mainland) by 1:50 PM.

- 1.8 mile bumper to bumper traffic on both Rte 130 and on Quaker Meeting House Road where they merge with Rte 6A.

- 6A is backed up, bumper-to-bumper, from at least QMH Road.

- My personal best... it took me 15 minutes to go from the lower parking level at the Sagamore Christmas Tree Shoppe to the Rte 6 West outlet... I did get to use the "I'm only going one way" joke on the CTS manager, who was standing in the parking lot going, "You know you just drove up a one way street, don't you?"

Yes, that's just SOME of the fun. I never got near the Bourne Bridge area, which would have been easier for me. The 6A gridlock also encompassed all of Sandwich Road, just in case you were thinking about dodging Sagamore that way. Someone else already thoughgt of that, and they have 3000 friends along.

There's also an anti-nuke rally at the Cape side approach to the Sagamore Bridge, maybe 25 people with signs. They had 3 state troopers hanging around, not one of whom saw fit to maybe try to direct some traffic. They laughed while people shouted abuse at the anti-nukers, at least when I drove by. The guy with the NO ESCAPE FROM THE CAPE sign was particularly popular.

Bottom line... you don't want to try anything Sagamorish today. Bite the bullet, and force your way down to Route 28 and the Bourne Bridge, which at least MIGHT be moving.

Avoid Sagamore At All Costs [Nor'easter Blues]

"Oh, He Never Returned, No, He Never Returned..."

We've been telling you about the delays associated with the Sagamore Bridge repair work recently, but today is the whole f***ing kit 'n' kaboodle. I nearly had to kill someone.

If you need an idea about how bad it was, let me tell you about my afternoon. I was done working at 3:30, and merely had to go across the Sagamore Bridge and get dinner/affection from my support staff here at Cape Cod Today's mainland desk. I was at the intersection o 6A and Rte 130 in what I suppose is far North Bourne. I could actually see the Sagamore Bridge, and not from all far away, either.

I got here at 5:15 PM. No joke. I could have Continental Drifted my way over here faster. Jeepers Creepers!

The normal Friday delays are augmented by the bridge repair work, which are further complicated because someone decided to have a Sagamore-to-the-Canal road race today, too. Throw in a nice day that merits heading to the beaches... and, well, I damn near broke some neck.

I'm not joking. After taking an hour and change to drive what I think was 300 yards, the last thing I needed was a raod-race delay. I scattered those suckers left and right as I literally plowed through the roadrunners. F**k them. If a girl in a Volvo made you jump off the road... well, sucks to be you now, doesn't it?

8:30 PM Update.... Still bumper-to-bumper going over the Sagamore Bridge to the Cape, backed up 5 miles.

Saturday, 5 PM update.... Not tooooo bad getting off-Cape (15 minutes from the Sagamore Inn (now open) to mainland Sagamore. Getting onto the Cape over the Sagamore Bridge is a different story, I saw backups to the horizon when I looked before escaping into Buzzards Bay.

Coastal Flood Risk Tonight [Nor'easter Blues]

High Lunar Tides Could Cause Splashover

Usually, it's more rotten when we publish the threat of coastal flooding. Tonight is actually rather nice, to be honest. However, the ocean could go into your yard tonight, so don't say that we didn't warn you, Chief.

Remember that Supermoon a few nights ago? That was the moon making one of her closer approaches to us, thus making it look all huge in the sky and stuff. It also alters the tides when it gets that close, making them reach higher onto the coastline than usual.

Combine that with a stiff breeze from the S/SE, and the National Weather Service issues a Coastal Flood Statement for tonight through the evening high tides. This isn't one of those Katie-bar-the-doorstorms where huge waves smash houses down and carry off children to a watery grave- we will be lacking that sort of wave action. It's just a case where the normal high tides will be even higher, and some splashover could occur. I just used that picture to get your attention.

High tides in the Cape area tonight will be running from 9 PM to 1 AM. Check here for your local area tides.

We'll also be getting quite a bit of rain over the next few days. Nothing biblical, but a constant dreary mess. Our first round should be here in an hour or two.. check the radar shot here.

Eva Fox Benefit [Nor'easter Blues]

Folks Turning Out For A  Good Cause

Cape Cod Today represented hard at the Evangelina Fox fundraiser ast Saturday night. As you can tell, it was one of those Cinco De Mayo affairs. That's Eva's mom on the left in the photo above. Eva skipped the party, which is a good thing because she's A) sick, and B) like 4 years old.

We had neither of those problems, so we got heavy into the Coronas and buffalo wings. We made a point of not letting them know that we had a Frenchy in our midst (CDM celebrates the Mexicos kicking out the French puppet emperor), so no one gave us much hassle.

$25 got you in (Gary from Sun On The Run tanning salon insisted on paying our way in), and there were more than 50 people there, so a lot of good was done. The shindig went down at Oliveira's, which sits on Hobomock Pond in Pembroke.

We'd like to thank everyone who turned out, and send out much love to the people/businesses who donated goods and services to the raffle. We also want to tip our caps to the Pembroke police department, who had a cop making sure we got across the street and everything. The turnout was good enough that 20 cars had to park on nearby Erickson Road.

Pro-style shot-out to New England Patriots linebacker Jermaine Cunningham, who donated a signed jersey.

What Our Readers REALLY Like Most [Nor'easter Blues]

Today's top story here is called What Our Readers Like Most, but perhaps it should be called "What Walter Likes Most."

For some reason, his Top 10 all time entries failed to include Obama To Vacation On Vineyard, written by yours truly. It drew in over 35,000 views (35,861 and counting, to be exact). That should be good for #4 overall.
