Snow Is Expected To Accumulate At One Inch Per Hour For A Couple Of Hours.
Heavy Snow May Begin As Early As 4 Or 5 PM Today.

Update.... just starting to snow now....8:38 AM
I'll call the cops later, and find out what conditions could result in the closing of the bridges..... we seem to be looking at 4-8", depennding where the storm tracks.
You'll see 2-5 inches on a lot of Boston weather sites, but those sites also didn't call for it to be snowing NOW (9 AM,Sunday). Note the use of the term "near blizzard conditions" in the NWS statement.
East-facing coastal properties could take a beating from the seas, as well. Be careful, Sagamore.
Update, 3 PM..... An inch or two on the ground, snowing harder now....here's the radar:
Intellicast.com - Current Radar - Hartford, CT
I drove by 3 accidents on Head Of The Bay Road at about 2PM. The Bourne Bridge was the only blacktop I saw, and it had horizontal snow blowing across it. Rte 28 South- just off the rotary- was one clear lane, one snowy lane. Visibility was about a mile, maybe less. It was all snow all day, even over the Bridge in Buzzards Bay. Conditions are expected to deteriorate.
Be careful out there.

One of the things that drew me to Bourne when I was home-hunting was the fact that we had our own F-15s nearby.
Well... those planes are elsewhere, now. The comforting sight of jets flying overhead will be someone else's pleasure. Some accountant dotted some i's and crossed some t's... and an era ended on Cape Cod. The F-15s of the 102nd will go to the 158th, based in Westfield. With the planes gone, the base looks to shift to a more intelligence-driven mission statement.

Police probe theft of water district metals; court action pending - Bourne, MA - The Bourne Courier
Buzzards Bay (former) Water District Superindent Glenn Doherty is suspected of stealing copper and brass from the town, and then fencing it in Middleboro to line his own shady pockets.
That doesn't sound like much, but a few thousand here and there ends up costing Bourne a teacher, a cop, whatever.... we all suffer as he wallows in the depths of his own avarice.
Hopefully, he'll be sent to prison and made the bitch of some big mean lifer with a size 17 foot and absolutely no sensitivity whatsoever.

Vehicle stop leads to arrest in series of housebreaks - Bourne, MA - The Bourne Courier
If you know Richard Coehlo of Bourne Neck Road... keep an eye on his crook ass, because he's stealing electronics. The 5-0 nabbed this kid with like an entire Circuit City in his car, and a lot of it was stuff that had been stolen in a series of break-ins.
We all like our crack and OCs now and then.... but it was only a matter of time before this kid got caught mid-robbery... and, in my house, that means a chest full of buckshot.
Big ups to the BPD, taking this kid off the street before I had to murder him... possibly in front of my children.

I'll be pretty honest with you, folks... it isn't often that you can go out, get snookered, listen to some music, vomit somewhere, hassle women you just met for opportunistic sex, maybe even beat someone down... and then go home and be like "I did a good thing today, the Gods will be pleased." This is one of those times.... don't let an opportunity like this pass you by.

Canalmen sweep to Big Ham Cup hockey title - Bourne, MA - The Bourne Courier

The late afternoon fire at a popular Buzzards Bay restaurant kept firefighters from Bourne and several other upper Cape departments busy last October 19th at the landmark Mezza Luna restaurant on Main Street, Buzzards Bay.
Rising From The Ashes:
You can't keep a good Italian restaurant down... Plans for new Mezza Luna taking shape - Bourne, MA - The Bourne Courier
The popular Buzzards Bay eatery went up in flames last October, and was totally totalled. Hence, the rebuilding effort... which started this week as the demolition crew got down to business.
Owner E.J. Cubellis is saving nothing but the fireplace bricks, which will be used in the new M.L.. Otherwise, he's going for a new look...a stone facade, built to withstand hurricanes.
The Mezza Luna opened before WWII, right after the devastating 1938 hurricane. It was well situated by the Bourne Bridge, right off Rte 6 (which goes all the way from P-Town to California). They have customers who have eaten there in 7 different decades.
I for one look forward to dining there, and I'm sure that the grand (re)opening will be a huge event in this small village within a small town. Book early... although you may want to wait until the bulldozers leave.
Side note.... Mr.Cubellis' father John is recovering from a bit of surgeon's work. Drop him a card, let him know you care... there's a good chance he's fed you a few times.
John Cubellis
253 Main St.
Buzzards Bay, MA 02532.
Also.. a battle of the bands will be held February 10th, at the Sandwich Taverna...proceeds go to help the rebuilding process.

Finally... "Mezzaluna" means "The Crescent" in Italian, as long as you keep the word together. Separate, it means "average (as opposed to full or new... most likely "half" ) moon."

Bourne Storm Report
Bourne has school today!
Sorry, kids...I did all that I could do for you. I'd put it at a 10% chance that they yank the kids out of school, mid-day.
We were 100% right on the timing of the changeover, as I'm currently (7 AM) looking out the window at big, fat snowflakes. It's snowing hard now... look for 2-5 inches by this evening. Most of the TV news stations are calling for a changeover at 4 PM, but pictures don't lie:

There's 5 inches in Boston right now.... so, if you have to commute, be careful. Remember...your boss will one day fire you without a care for anything but his bottom line... so just sleep in today, trust me.
Kids...perfect snowball snow, although it will be a very wet Sledding event. Wear a hood, gloves, scarf and a hat... and if you have waterproof pants, don them.
I'll pop back in here later with any additional pics/stories/news/gossip that this storm may bring our collection of villages. Also check Cape Wide News on this site, as Master T and his staff keep up on things a bit better than I do.

10:30 AM.... Thundersnow happening now... the sleet/snow line is pretty much running along the Canal. I'm getting snow in Buzzards Bay, but someone on the other side of the bridge might be getting rain. It should wind down to flurries over the course of the afternoon. I'll say it's all done by 4 PM in Bourne... at least the serious stuff will be done.

Snow Job?
The town of Bourne had set aside $92k for snow removal. So far, we've spent $128k. It's January, and we typically get our worst snows in February and March.
This, of course, followed last year's light winter... which led to us allocating less money for snow removal, which leads to us having to borrow money at interest to do it now.
Of course...next year, when we order enough salt to ruin the fields of Carthage... we'll have a Georgia-style winter.
2-5" of snow tomorrow, too...see below for details

Bulletin Issued: 4:54AM EST, Sunday Jan 13, 2008
Also..... our Bourne-specific forecast.... from meteorologist...ummm...me.
Snow targets the Bourne area early Monday morning.
As of right now... and storm tracks have a way of changing.....
We're looking at rain/snow breaking out around 1 AM Monday... working as a mix for several hours before turning to all snow in the morning (6 AM). It will continue as snow- with some breaks here and there- through 8 PM Monday or so. The intensity of said snow will have to be determined as it is happening, but 2-5" seems to be the rule among various forecast models.
Look for god-awful commutes, both to and from work. The rotary should be a disaster, and it wouldn't be beyond belief to see schools cancelled. While the morning bus stop should just be annoying, the ride home after school could be flat-out dangerous.
Being as this is coastal Cape Cod...leave room in your emergency plans for this to turn out to be a rain event....but get the bread and milk, just to be safe. If it rains, just make lots of French Toast.

Report recommends adding assistant fire chief, clerical help - Bourne, MA - The Bourne Courier
Long story short.... a firm hired by the town- Donald Jacobs Consulting- spoke out about the need for an assistant fire chief and clerical help at the Bourne Fire Department.
Jacobs also spoke of the need for more on-call firefighters.... people from the area who work on a per-fire basis. Jacobs feels that Bourne has enough full-time firefighters.
Acting Fire Chief David Kingsbury has no poroblems with another chief around, or a part-time secretary.... but he isn't so fond of the idea about increasing on-call firefighters. He prefers the full-time version, with the greater training and set hours.
The Donald Jacobs Consulting firm isn't exactly a trained firefighting team, and word around the station is that the firm barely spoke to any actual firefighters. While DJC says staffing levels are adequate. BFD is saying that what is adequate in some small towns isn't adequate in one with a bevy of restaurants, schools, MMAs, treacherous rotaries, two high schools, hard-to-navigate flyovers, minor-league baseball teams, crack hotels, nursing homes, what seems to be a regional trend towards restaurant fires, and everybody on the Cape having to drive through town both ways to get to work..
So... as you might imagine... there may be some debate over the DJC findings. Tune in later for details...

Zoning Board Throwdown!
A
partments, retail space, and an access road between Sandwich Rd. and MacArthur Blvd. weigh in to this local story of Zoning, Retail, Residence, and Quality Of Life in today's Cape Cod Times.
Leonard Cubellis is the man behind CanalSide Commons, a retail/residential project, slated to sit between the Bourne Rotary and Upper Cape Tech High School. He's aiming for 300 affordable housing units and 85,ooo sq. feet of retail space.
That's a lot of Starbuck's, Best Buy, Abercrombie + Fitch, etc.... as well as 300 places to live for people who aren't exactly choosing between CanalSide and Hyannis Port, if you know what I mean. I personally know people who need both that housing and the jobs that would come from a new mini-mall/housing development.
The issue also includes some land owned by Thomas Pappas, who plans to build Bosun Rd. area low income housing. He owns a lot (a parcel, not a bunch) of land between the Bosun Rd. project and his current Port of Call subdivision. Said lot would make a fine access road between his two subdivisions, and talk is that this is just what he plans to do.
The Cubellis Road would actually meet the Upper Cape Regional Technical High School driveway. The Pappas road would be further East. Both would allow users to somewhat dodge the Bourne Rotary. Locals aren't pleased.
They, I, and you wouldn't be the only people to recognize this fact. Residents of the Port of Call subdivision (nowhere near the Buzzards Bay tavern, by the way) are pretty much united against this road, as anyone even remotely local would then be using said access road to skip the congested nightmare of the rotary...thus introducing the late-for-work speeder and the dodging-the-cops drunk driver to what was once a quiet, safe side street.
A recent Zoning Board Of Appeals meeting brought the Port of Call residents out in full force against these developments. They bought into a quiet, side-street subdivision...not the Bournetona 500 they fear an access road around a busy rotary would bring to their neighborhood.
Can you fight City Hall? An increased tax base for the town vs. quality of life for the Port of Call residents....place your bets.
