A Cape Codder returns to make her first feature film
American Primitive to be filmed here starting this week
Thirty years ago it all began here in Dennis on Olde Cape Cod
Cape Cod native Gwendolyn Wynne is returning to her roots to make her first feature film.
The Wynne family moved to Cape Cod in 1977, and Gwen (on right) attended Dennis Yarmouth High School before graduating to Brown. She was determined to make this movie on Cape Cod because of the wonderful, unique light and geography and because the Cape is itself a character in the movie.
“Returning to my roots has brought such a fresh insight to the film,” says Gwen, “it is also wonderful how the word is spreading through the Cape and old friends are calling to see if they can help in any way. Spyro Mitrokostas, Executive Director of the Dennis Chamber of Commerce, has been incredibly helpful.”
Based in part on her experiences growing up on Cape Cod, Gwen is the writer, producer and director of American Primitive. The American Primitive of the title refers to Gwen’s father’s unique furniture making and restoration business.
“It seems like kismet that our main location will be in Dennis, right on my ‘favorite’ Cape Cod beach. Every time I look at the beach all the years of struggle and frustration melt away and I can see why I’ve insisted that we shoot the film on the Cape, rather than in say Mississippi, because it’s a place where human rights issues have been a concern from the start.”
American Primitive will also be shooting in Provincetown, at Ptown High and the popular ‘A-House’. “We are hoping to cast at least two of the roles in the film from the regional high schools on Cape Cod,” says Gwen. “In addition we are holding open call auditions for featured extra roles.”
Pre-production on the film began in March and principal photography will begin mid April.
