Today in Cape history: Whales return to Cape Cod Bay for first time in quarter century

O

n this day in 1905 as reported by The Lowell Sun -

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. - The big school of finback whales spouting in Cape Cod Bay has stirred the old bay whale hunters, who are sharpening their lances and overhauling their gear, which has lain unused for a quarter of a century.

For two days whales have been seen all over the bay, from Race Point clear to the edge of the ice floe off Dennis, by the flatfish dredging fleet, and 'There she blows!' is heard many times a day.

Captain Mayo of the dredge Little Jeanie saw at least a dozen finbacks blowing at the same time on Thursday and disporting in the smooth inland waters. It is believed they have come in after herring.

It is 26 hyears since a herd of whale was seen in Cape Cod Bay. Up to that time for many years whale had been numerous in the bay in the spring, and extensive oil works were supplied by Provincetown whale hunters.

Since the great killing of 1879, the whales have kept clear of the bay, so that not a vessel of the large fishing fleets going out from here is fitted to attack such great game ...

Captain Mayo knew whales, from having served on HMS Turkey Club in the war.

My mistake, thanks for catching it. I just changed to photo to one of finbacks. Least I think they're finbacks ...

Jack C...when the Cape Wind debate began you lauded yourself to Magical and Barbara D. as an old salt with years of offshore maritime experience. Then your post and comment:

"My mistake, thanks for catching it. I just changed to photo to one of finbacks. Least I think they're finbacks ..."

Hello!!! You and "Clean Power Now" are frauds. You and Peck deserve each other.

Happy Easter.

Jack C....I mean everything I say. I just found the whale misidentification ironic in light of past comments.

Did you get permission to use their photo?

I cited them as the source of the photo in the photo credit, as I do with all photos, maverick. As to my alleged false claims in the past, please cite examples. Your inability to do so will show how you are the one engaged in fraud, all while wrapping yourself in a cloak of piety.

If I owned 7seas, I'd be delighted to get the free advertising.

My thoughts exactly, dilligaf. But someone who competes with this business - a charter boat captain such as maverick, for example - may take exception to a competitor getting a free plug.

Speaking of competition, this is how maverick views Cape Wind, which would share in the use of Nantucket Sound with, to cite one example, charter fishing boats. Rarely if ever does maverick acknowledge this as the basis for his opposition to the project. All while denigrating Cape Wind supporters for their "greed."

I'd suggest the man should be ashamed, but that would assume he has any.

Jack C...I never said you made false claims. I just found it humorous that you stated all your maritime experience back in the Magical days and can't tell the difference between a finback and a submarine.

Also, I have not been pious since altar boy days back in the forties.

As to competition and Horseshoe Shoal. I love the whale boats, no competition, just friends. Many of my charters did a whale watch the day before.

99% of my charters are no where near Horseshoe. I have already stated that and the fact that Cape Wind will have no effect on my business.

But it will destroy Nantucket Sound. That to me and it's residents is shameful.

Jack Coleman [Member] writes:
Ah, thanks for clarifying, maverick. You claim to have never said I made "false claims," yet in your first comment here you described me and Clean Power Now as "frauds." Reminds me of the "Seinfeld" episode where the alleged friend of Jerry's insisted that calling Jerry a "phony" was a compliment.

Next time, back your your claim before spending the day in futile research and then having to back pedal.

Jack C...Definitions of fraud on the Web. If the shoe fits wear it.

"* intentional deception resulting in injury to another person"
As in the residents of Nantucket Sound.

"* imposter: a person who makes deceitful pretenses"
As in lower electric bills for Cape Cod along with cleaner air and a reduction in global warming.

"* something intended to deceive; deliberate trickery intended to gain an advantage"
As in Cape Wind will not comment on dredging. Thus no need to get a permit.

"* In the broadest sense, a fraud is a deception made for personal gain."
As in getting paid to scare the public about global warming even though Mark Rodgers stated Cape Wind would have no effect.

"* An intentional perversion of truth; deceitful practice or device resorted to with intent to deprive another of property or other right."
As in the land grab of Federal Water by a private developer with the deprivation of that water to all of Cape Cod.
