Vineyard Police arrest armed man after two-hour stand off in Edgartown
Special report by Ezra Sherman of VineyardToday.com
EDGARTOWN - Martha's Vineyard's Tactical Response Team diffused a potentially deadly situation in Edgartown Thursday. There were no reports of any injuries to either officers or the individual taken into custody, which is exactly why the team was formed in the first place, to help arrest idiots like this guy.
Just after 12 p.m. yesterday afternoon, Edgartown Police responded to the Whalers Walk development for a report of a suspicious male with a weapon. When cops peaked in the windows they observed "a male with a gun inside the residence." In case the officers hadn't seen the gun, the suspect informed them, "I have a gun, go ahead and shoot me." Police declined to shoot the suspect and instead called the TRT team.
During the two hour standoff, the suspect, 36-year-old Arthur Smith, repeatedly brandished his weapon at police. The weapon appeared, according to the police report, to be a long-barreled black pistol. Smith was eventually taken into custody and charged with Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Disorderly Conduct.

Reminder from the Falmouth PD: don't make it easy on the criminals, lock your cars
FALMOUTH - The Falmouth Police Department needs your help. Every year vehicles in Falmouth are the target of theft. In 2008, the Falmouth Police Department investigated around 300 reports involving theft from vehicles.
With two months left in 2009, the department has already reached over 300 reports involving thefts from vehicles. While some of these cases result in arrests, often they do not.
The common denominator for victims was leaving their car unlocked.
The Falmouth Police Department offers the following helpful tips:
- Lock your car doors
- Remove valuable items

Truro, Wellfleet & Ptown Police work together to nab two after a rash of home break-ins
Truro, Wellfleet and Ptown Police work together to nab two after a rash of home break-in
UPDATE: Charges, more details announced...
TRURO - A Boston woman and her boyfriend were arrested Tuesday after a series of breaks were reported around Truro. Allen Borden, 27, of Boston, and Natasha Abbrahim, 25, also of Boston, were taken into custody by police after a concerted search
by the Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet Police Departments.
It started when Lt. John Lundborn responded to an alarm at a home on Sawyer Grove Road in North Truro around 12 p.m. on Tuesday. Upon checking the building he observed a basement door kicked in. While calling for a Barnstable County Sheriff's dog and back-up, he heard a loud crash from a home to the rear of that home. An immediate check of that home revealed that the door in that home was also kicked in.
Truro Police Sgt. Perry and Lt. Lundborn were checking the inside of the homes when a third alarm came in. Provincetown Police Officers monitoring Truro calls checked that residence upon request and found a subsequent break.
Evidence and descriptions were given to police by neighbors about a suspicious black Ford traveling in the area. After obtaining a description, Wellfleet Police observed a vehicle matching the description and stopped the vehicle on Route 6 around 1:30 p.m. The vehicle contained stolen property from the previous breaks as confirmed by police, homeowners and caretakers.
Both Borden and Abbrahim were arrested by Wellfleet officers and charged with the following:
- Four (4) counts of Breaking and Entering
- Four (4) counts of Larceny Over $250
- Four (4) counts of Injury to Property
Cash bail in the amount of $2,000 was set for each.
Police are still sorting out the details of this recent rash of break-ins. Reports are still coming in regarding this matter.

Triple shooting at 72 Nautical Way in Hyannis Saturday morning
At least one chest wound is life-threatening, car sped off after shooting
One victim moved to a Boston hospital, "drive-by" aspect investigated

HYANNIS - State Police crime scene investigators on right and below examine evidence at the scene of a triple shooting at 72 Nautical Way in Hyannis early Saturday morning.
One 23 year-old male was shot in the chest and two other victims shot in the leg and foot.
It is believed the victim shot in the chest suffered life-threatening injuries.
Chest wounds are considered life threatening, acccording to Hyannis Fire Lt. Thomas Kenny.
"Drive-by" shooting?
The victim who was shot multiple times including a chest wound is in critical condition at a Boston area hospital. Police say the shootings were not random, and that the victims knew each other. Nautical Way is in an area known for drug arrests in the past.

An initial on scene investigation resulted in a police broadcast regarding a vehicle leaving the scene. The vehicle was reported to have fled Nautical Way immediately following the gunshots.
Barnstable Patrolman Brendan Burchell located the vehicle on Sea Street, Hyannis. He stopped the vehicle and found it contained four adult males one of whom had a single gun shot wound to his lower leg. Hyannis Fire Rescue transported this third victim to Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Room for treatment.
The othet two victims with single gun shot wounds are being treated at Cape Cod Hospital.
Investigators are trying to determine the intended target and motive of the shooting, but they say this is not a random crime. All of the victims and suspects are known to local police.
The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
State Police crime scene investigators and Barnstable Police and Fire-Rescue were on the scene for several hours gathering evidence.
