Car crashes into pole in Falmouth, hit and run occurs moments later at that same location
UPDATED: Horrendous collision rips up landscape early Thursday morning at 1 a.m.
FALMOUTH - Police are investigating a hit and run accident which sent one person to Falmouth Hospital early Thursday morning, February 4, 2010 around 12:30 a.m.
According to Falmouth Police Sgt. Scott Hartzler at the accident scene, one vehicle, a 1997 Mitsubishi Diamante, crashed into a pole snapping it in half and caught fire, leaving downed utility lines across Sandwich Road near Deepwater Drive.
The driver of the Diamante was identified as Michael Jester of Falmouth. The crash remains under investigation but excessive speed and alcohol appear to be factors. Jester was placed under arrest and charged with OUI and Driving to Endanger.
Two subsequent crashes were reported at the scene. One involved a vehicle striking the downed wires, causing minor vehicle damage. The other involved a good samaritan, identified as Jessica Way of East Falmouth, who stopped and exited her vehicle to offer assistance. Way was struck by the downed wires when they were hit by another vehicle. She was transported to Falmouth Hospital and later released. The driver of the vehicle that hit the wires causing them to strike Jessica Way failed to stop.
The hit and run vehicle is described by Falmouth Police as a dark colored Jeep Liberty with front-end and possibly passenger side damage. Police recovered a headlight from the hit and run vehicle at the accident scene.
The section of road where the accident took place was shut down for over 2 hours as Police reconstruct the scene and utility crews made repairs to the down lines and pole.
